· Chapter 6, “Mixed Methods Designs and Approaches”

·

· Discussion: Designing Mixed Methods Research

· Mixed methods research designs refer to a set of designs that purposively mix or integrate both qualitative data and quantitative data. As with quantitative research and qualitative research, the choice to use mixed methods research is influenced by the researcher’s philosophical orientation.

· This week’s readings provide an overview of various types of mixed methods research designs. As with previous discussions on design, the selection of the most appropriate mixed design is guided by the study’s purpose and research questions and/or hypotheses. The choice of design links the research questions and/or hypotheses to the data that will be collected achieving alignment among research components.

· In this Discussion, you will explore the basics of mixed methods research designs, calling upon your growing understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research.

· With these thoughts in mind:

· By Day 4

· Post your response to the question, “To what extent is mixed methods research simply taking a quantitative design and a qualitative design and putting them together?” Next, explain the types of research questions best served by mixed methods research. Then, explain one strength and one limitation of mixed methods research. Finally, provide a rationale for or against the utility of mixed methods research in your discipline.

· Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

What positive outcomes do you anticipate will come from this process, which may be applied to potential work settings and/or doctoral programs?

Effective clinical innovations and the dissemination of research findings are key elements in the growth and development of the psychology profession. There are numerous avenues that enable authors to publish and present their work. Poster presentations at conferences are effective methods for communicating research findings and providing opportunities to meet with other researchers and clinicians to discuss the research being presented. Thus, these types of conference presentations play a key role in the proliferation of research.

In this week’s discussion, you will be submitting your proposal for the Week Five Virtual Conference. You may utilize relevant assignments from previous courses in this program or suitable projects from your professional life. See the PSY699 Call for Student Poster (Links to an external site.) Presentations document for specific parameters and instructions on how to create your proposal. Following the guidelines presented in the document, create your proposal and attach it to your initial post in the discussion forum. Evaluate the impact participating in conference presentations may have on potential work settings and/or doctoral programs and comment on the following questions in your initial post.

  • How are conference presentations professionally relevant?
  • What elements of the proposal process were most difficult for you, and why?
  • What positive outcomes do you anticipate will come from this process, which may be applied to potential work settings and/or doctoral programs?

What does evidence-based research say about the development of sexual orientation in young and middle adulthood?

What does evidence-based research say about the development of sexual orientation in young and middle adulthood? Though the body of literature addressing sexual orientation, including heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality, is far from complete, the literature continues to grow. Your awareness of this literature helps inform your social work practice as you address the needs of clients with a variety of sexual orientations.

For this Assignment, conduct your own research to identify at least one journal article that addresses sexual orientation. Select an article that you find especially relevant to you in your role as a social worker.

Submit a 2.5- to 4-page APA paper that includes the following:

  • -A summary of your findings regarding sexual orientation and its impact on life-span development, including findings from the resources and from the journal article(s) you selected during your research
  • -An explanation of how you might apply your findings to social work practice

Review this week’s Learning Resources, considering socialization agents that influence gender development and how these may differ across cultures.

By this point in the course, you have explored theories that attempt to explain how and to what degree gender is socially constructed. This does not mean, however, that the socialization processes are the same for everyone or even that gender is defined similarly across groups. Just as conceptualizations of gender have changed over time, they are also different across cultures. Cultures range from patriarchal (e.g., Saudi Arabian culture) to matriarchal (e.g., the Akan of Ghana) and place differing importance on the roles of family, religion, education, and career for males and females. Different behaviors, aspects of appearance, and communication styles are also considered gender typical for males and females across cultures. Even the language spoken within a culture can influence gender socialization. For example, some languages (e.g., Spanish, Italian, Hindi) assign either male or female gender to nouns.

For this Discussion, you will examine gender socialization practices and agents in cultures other than your own. While you are conducting research, keep in mind that the literature reports trends and common practices but cannot account for individual differences in gender socialization within a culture. Keep an open mind but be sensitive and avoid stereotyping as much as possible.

To prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, considering socialization agents that influence gender development and how these may differ across cultures.
  • Select a culture to research for this Discussion. This should be a cultural group to which you yourself do not belong.
  • Locate information about gender socialization practices and agents within this culture using the Walden Library and reputable academic sources on the Internet.

By Day 4

Post a brief description of the culture you selected. Then identify three significant gender socialization practices or agents in this culture. Explain how these practices and agents influence gender role development in the respective cultures. Be specific and provide examples.
