Written responses should be at least 1 full page, single-spaced, with care being taken to address all parts of questions.  Write your responses directly into this document, save, and submit via Blackboard by the deadline.

Read Walster, E., Walster, G. W., Piliavin, J, & Schmidt, L. (1973). “Playing hard to get”: Understanding an elusive phenomenon

In your paper, address the following questions:

1. Pay attention to the authors’ attitude when describing the rationale for their studies (at least the first few!) How do they seem to feel about their early hypotheses and attempts to support them? What does this say about the ideal approach to a research project?

2. What kinds of ethical concerns would you need to consider in proposing any of the studies discussed in this article?

3. A close friend mentions in conversation that everyone knows that “guys definitely want you more if you play hard to get.” Since you spent your hard-earned money on a social psychology course you decide that you’re going to let her know what the research actually says on the matter. You know that she doesn’t want to hear a lecture, so you decide to keep the description of the study to about 2 minutes. Based on this research, what do you tell her?

  1. We are attracted to those others whose presence is      rewarding to us. Can you think of a situation in which this might not be      true?
  2. Why would proximity make it more likely one would find      friends? What effect does proximity have on our feelings for those we      dislike?
  3. Does absence make the heart grow fonder? What might be      the conditions under which it would?
  4. In what respects do we expect a beautiful stranger to      be wonderful? In what respect does “what is beautiful is good”      not work?

8. What effects do attractiveness have on salary? Why might this be so?

  1. What is the matching principle? Why does it work?
  2. What kind of similarity helps people be attracted to      each other?
  3. Do premarital or marital enrichment programs work? What      is the difference between efficacy and effectiveness research on marital      therapy?

Discuss any concerns you may have about applying to or attending graduate school. List any questions you have about the application or licensure process.

Tasks

In the Discussion Area, address the following:

  • Select one of the careers that require graduate-level degrees.
  • Identify at least three graduate school programs you would consider attending. For example, if you hope to become a licensed professional counselor (LPC), you would first need to earn a master’s degree at the very least. You would want to research programs that provide master’s degrees in counseling. Include research on whether you would fulfill the requirements for licensure in your state of residence if you completed those specific programs. Cover the following:
    • Indicate which license you would seek and which programs would or would not prepare you to be eligible for licensure.
    • If you want to become licensed, ensure that these programs meet your state’s requirements for licensure. For example, if you wish to become an LPC, you would have to review the American Association of State Counseling Boards and locate your state’s licensing board website address.
  • For each of the three graduate school programs, research and discuss the institution’s accreditation. You may find that many state licensing boards require programs to be regionally accredited.
  • Discuss any concerns you may have about applying to or attending graduate school. List any questions you have about the application or licensure process.
  • Provide at least two authoritative references or sources for the information you have discussed. One of these can be the textbook.

Submission Details:

  • Write your initial response in a minimum of 100–150 words.

Identify who the participants      would be in your study and what research question you would like to work      together with the participants to answer.

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resources on your own before you bid. Main references come from Balkin, R. S., & Kleist, D. M. (2017) and/or American Psychological Association (2014). You need to have scholarly support for any claim of fact or recommendation regarding treatment. APA format also requires headings. Use the prompt each week to guide your heading titles and organize the content of your initial post under the appropriate headings. Remember to use scholarly research from peer-reviewed articles that are current. Please follow the instructions to get full credit for the discussion. Discussion – Week 11

Action Research for Social Change

With consideration for Walden University’s commitment to both local and global actions to make a difference in communities and generate positive social change, this week you will head into your own community and consider how you might generate social change through the use of action research. Reflect on the area where you live and think about a social problem that exists on an individual, at the institutional level, or community level. Remember that action research is a collaborative effort between the researcher and the participants. As you think about an area that you feel is in need of social change, think about how you, as a researcher, could work together to generate possible options for addressing the social problem. For this Discussion, you will post an image of the social problem you would like to focus on and propose how you might use action research to facilitate community action and develop solutions that address the issue. The idea is for you to take a photo that demonstrates a need for community improvement—a snapshot that captures the issue you are concerned about. You may take the photo with your smartphone, camera, or other electronic devices that will allow you to upload the file to your computer.

To Prepare

  • Think about areas in your      community that could benefit from social change.
  • Take a photo that reflects      where social change is needed. With consideration for informed consent and      to protect the confidentiality of the community at large, please do not      post photos that include identifiable facial images of human subjects.

Post by Day 3

  • Include the photo you took that      reflects where social change is needed.
  • Describe the social issue and      explain how you could use action research to promote social change in this      area of your community.
  • Identify who the participants      would be in your study and what research question you would like to work      together with the participants to answer.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Uploading your photo implies consent to use the image for the purpose of course instruction and discussion.

In this discussion, I will give you a “What would you do?” scenario. Please share with the class what you would do in the following scenario. Also, include any resources, websites, phone numbers, or other information you would provide to help your friend, Dakota, in this mock scenario below.

NOTE: I have selected gender-neutral names so that you may decide if this is a heterosexual couple, same sex couple, etc. You can choose if Dakota is male or female. You can also choose Chris’s gender.

Your best friend, Dakota, has become despondent. You are not sure if Dakota is angry with you. You decide to confront Dakota.

Dakota shares with you that Chris, Dakota’s partner, has been very stressed since losing a high paying job. The bills and strain of a job search have created a situation in which Dakota is walking on egg shells. You notice that Dakota has some small bruises. You aren’t sure, but it looks like someone grabbed or hit Dakota.

You are a pretty blunt person, and just ask your friend if Chris is being abusive. Dakota looks away and eventually says, “I really push Chris’s buttons, and I know Chris is stressed. I cannot be mad when things get out of hand. Plus, it was only once, and Chris says it will never happen again.”

However, the next time you see Dakota, you can visibly see a black eye that has begun to fade to a nice shade of yellow. Dakota tells you right away that it was a clumsy accident. You know your friend is lying. What do you do? What resources or guidance might be helpful?
