Assignment 2: RA 1: Advocacy in Action Presentation

Description of RA 1:

In this assignment, you will develop an advocacy plan based on the scenario below. Your plan will incorporate the relevant ACA Advocacy Competencies and your approach to facilitating client wellness.

Scenario:

You have been hired as a counselor in a local community agency that offers services to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence. Your first client is a 33-year old female war veteran who returned from Afghanistan one year ago. She enlisted in the army right after high school and has been married for 7 years. She reported that the physical abuse started in the third year of her marriage. She described serving in Afghanistan as a “piece of cake” compared to what she experiences at home. Since returning from Afghanistan your client acknowledges that her husband has physically abused her at least once a month. She wants to leave but stated that she has no place to go and cannot find a job. She expressed disappointment over the treatment she has received from the government since returning home. She suffers from depression, insomnia, and it is believed that she may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Your client reports that she has lost 20 pounds in the last 3 months. She describes feeling trapped, isolated, alone, and scared and is relying on you to help her. You have been asked to present your case at the faculty meeting in two weeks. You have decided to prepare a PowerPoint presentation that emphasizes your advocacy and wellness approach to working with the client.

Instructions:

  1. Review the ACA Advocacy Competencies and Competency Domains.
  2. Create a PowerPoint presentation that:
    1. Introduces your advocacy plan (who, what, and why?).
    2. Elaborates on the relevant competency domains that you believe are most applicable to your work with the client.
    3. Describes how you will use the related counselor advocacy competencies to assist your client (be specific regarding each relevant counselor competency per domain).
    4. Identifies issues in your client’s life that affect her overall wellness.
    5. Includes suggestions to help your client improve her physical, cognitive, emotional, and social wellness.
  3. The presentation should include no more than 10–14 slides.
  4. The presentation should be created using a Microsoft PowerPoint template that reflects professional, graduate-level scholarship.

Your final product will be a 10- to 14-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation written in APA format, utilizing at least five scholarly sources. Use the speaker notes feature to provide necessary detail and to keep the presentation screen from being overcrowded.

What steps would you take in this session to make sure that Jamila has the resources she needs right now? How would you help Jamila develop a plan to manage the current crisis?

Sometimes clients come into the counseling session with an immediate crisis. They need an immediate solution to a problem. Counseling in these situations needs to be focused and goal oriented.

Jamila has been working with her counselor on learning to better manage her 9-year-old son. Last night, her son was hit by a car and is in the hospital. This has created a number of problems:

  1. She has to arrange childcare for her daughter so she can stay with her son in the hospital.
  2. He will need some special care when he gets home because he will be in a wheelchair.
  3. She is fearful that she will lose her job as a teacher’s aide in the local public school.

Write a 500-750-word paper addressing the following:

  1. How would you prioritize Jamila’s concerns in the counseling session? What would you address first?
  2. What steps would you take in this session to make sure that Jamila has the resources she needs right now?
  3. How would you help Jamila develop a plan to manage the current crisis?

Include at least three scholarly references in your paper.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is required.

In the past, a one-cause approach was more accepted to understanding psychopathological behavior. Today, it is more accepted that there are multiple causes that can explain the development of mental illness.

For this Assignment, you will compare and contrast the early ways of thinking about psychological disorders to today’s current view and explain the multi-dimensional model and the major approaches (theorized causes) of mental illness.

  1. Explain what early thoughts and beliefs existed about what caused mental illness.
  2. Describe one of the psychological traditions and how it furthered the beliefs about what causes mental illness from that of the early beliefs by the Greeks and from Religions. Select from: Freud’s theory of the unconscious, humanism, or behaviorism.
  3. Explain the idea of a multi-dimensional approach and how it differs from a single approach to understanding the major causes of mental illness.
  4. Last, referring directly to the textbook, provide an overview of the major approaches of a multi-dimensional integrated model listed in the textbook. For each major approach, include its central tenant(s) as it relates to the explanation (or cause) of mental illness. The major approaches that provide an explanation or cause for the development of mental illness are biological approach (genetics and neurological factors), psychological approach (cognitive and behavioral factors, including the unconscious), emotions approach, social and cultural approach, and the developmental approach. For example, from the biological approach, an imbalance of neurochemicals is believed to influence (or cause) behavioral changes as well as heritability.
