While conducting my interview and reviewing reading I learned that there are a few evaluation methods for school psychologists to use to identify students that have exceptional needs. While the IQ test was used for many years, parents and school staff have become more in favor of the RTI method of evaluation. This form of evaluation involves gathering data from multiple sources regarding the child’s behavior in various situations, as well as direct observations and interactions.

Concern to identify a child with exceptional needs is important to due quickly. For some, children missing milestones such as conversation, walking, and eating solid foods can raise red flags. While it is great to be concerned and to discuss these issues with your doctor, they do not equal a child being exceptional. When children enter school and begin to interact with their peers, then concerns and exceptionality become more apparent. Missing milestones in early education is defiantly time to be concerned and begin discussion about an evaluation.

During my interview, the mother was extremely resistant to her child being tested until she entered the first grade. Her struggles with testing her daughter early was the perceptions schools would have upon admitting her daughter. While schools are inclusive environments for exceptional children, are there better ways for them to appear more inclusive to those not yet involved in the school?

By speaking with the school psychologist, I learned a lot about identifying exceptional students. Our psychologist is very accommodating for both the teachers and students and always provides us with such valuable information. When discussing with her about identifying students who may have exceptional needs, she said that I should be concerned when the child seems withdrawn from the tasks as well as their peers, are throwing fits over small things, can’t regulate their emotions, act out in class, and often talk over the teacher or talk while she is talking. She said that not all students are going to exhibit the same behaviors but she said that any of these on their own could be concerning.

Once the teacher sees some of these signs and realizes through their own observations that the student does not seem to be making the same progress as their peers (either socially or academically), then they can refer the student to the “Educational Support Team (EST)” that we have at our school. Once the student is referred and the paperwork is filled out explaining the concerns, the EST will meet together and discuss what we can do to help the students. Often times, testing is required. Many students are picked up for IEP’s or services through this process. If no services are required, the team will come up with some accommodations for the student and the team will continue to meet every couple of months to discuss progress and to see if they can support the student in any other ways.

evolved since you turned into your outline, it is OK to deviate from what you submitted in your outline last week! You are encouraged to:

  • Use headings within your literature review to guide the reader through your thoughts as you summarize the key points you want to make.
  • Be scholarly, but don’t use overcomplicated language. Be direct. Do not use colloquial expressions, and do not use first person (e.g., “I,” “me,” “my”).
  • Do not simply write a paper that brings the reader through a summary of what you read article-by-article (like mini article critiques). Instead, each paragraph should be about a different point you want to make about your topic and what the combined literature demonstrates about that point. Expect to use multiple citations in each paragraph.
  • Take a look at the introduction for the article you critiqued in Week 3 if you are unsure how to write your literature review. Notice how their literature review is focused on topics and a synthesis of others’ research and theory. Model your structure, tone, and “flow of thoughts” after theirs. Also, note how the authors have used citations and where they are placed.

To accomplish these goals, students are strongly encouraged to use the services of the Graduate Online Writing Studio.  The Professor will monitor individual student use of the Graduate Online Writing Studio AND how students apply the recommended changes.

BONUS OPPORTUNITY: Students that use the services of the Graduate Online Writing Studio during Week 6 will discuss their experience during the Week 7 discussion (e.g., how easy the process was, what type of feedback they got, how the service helped improve writing skills).  If students do not use the Writing Studio, they will describe why to help us better understand reasons and HOW students plan to improve their scholarly

Responses to peers. Note that this is measured by both the quantity and quality of your posts. Does your post contribute to continuing the discussion? Are your ideas supported with citations from the learning resources and other scholarly sources? Note that citations are expected for both your main post and your response posts. Note also, that, although it is often helpful and important to provide one or two sentence responses thanking somebody or supporting them or commiserating with them, those types of responses do not always further the discussion as much as they check in with the author. Such responses are appropriate and encouraged; however, they should be considered supplemental to more substantive responses, not sufficient by themselves.

1. Classmate (T. Rat)

In the live chat with Dr. Capuzzi this week, the takeaway points for me were:

Technology:

For professional counselors technological changes means there may not be a need to relocate. Teleconferencing is now available and this provides an ability to reach clients in remote areas or clients can set up an appointment through your online private practices. In addition to easier access to clients, by accessing the Internet, counselors have a plethora of resources, research, updated code of ethics and continuing education.

Technology obviously provides many amenities for clients, as well. With mental health awareness has come easier opportunities for clients to reach out for help. There have been 24/7 crises lines have been around for quite some time for persons feeling depressed or have other mental health needs and need to talk to someone. Now there is a 24/7 text connecting option in the United States. If overwhelmed, suffering anxiety, depression, all a person needs to do is text 741741 and someone will text back immediately. Texts will continue or can change to a telephone call if requested, and the person will ‘stay with’ the person until s/he feels they are going to be okay or referred.

Rapport Building:

Dr. Capuzzi talked about the necessity of getting to know the total person and not be swayed by preset ideals, bias, or other based on culture, looks, etc. Digging into from a holistic mindset, considering all areas of the person’s world to better understand them and for the client to understand him/herself and come to the best options.

Assessment:

There were questions about the best career assessment instruments to be used for different populations. Dr. Capuzzi surprised me when he said he doesn’t put a lot of weight on assessments. He explained that he liked to discuss with clients what the assessment was all about, what it was described to reveal and how it was to aide in his/her career search. He then asks the client what they think the assessment will report and afterward review with client any differences. I think this is a great idea because it will provide the client with a baseline of what they think they know about one self.

2. Classmate (Y. Tho)

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi  talked about addressing the whole person being important. This reminds me of the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) which focuses on mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. These are all areas that should be focused on when treating the person as a whole. This is important to me because the clients are more than just a mental illness they are a person that needs to be well in all areas, mentally and physically.

Incorporate into practice

I would use (DBT) to teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress, regulate emotions and improve relations with others. This therapy was originally designed for people with borderline personality disorder, but has evolved to assist with self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

Three take away points

Working towards your career and gaining experience to put a visual on the field is important. The amount of classes that are required since Dr. Capuzzi was in college has changed and there was no licensure for counselors. The profession has evolved since he began his career. You could get a job with a Bachelors Degree at different locations but now a Masters if required. There was no such thing as a clinical mental health counselor.

3. Classmate (G. Mac)

Regardless of the clients age as counselors it is important to for us to be competent in the career counseling aspect of life. The topic of careers can impact individuals and families in different ways and arise in a unexpected time in a session (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012).

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi discussed the topic of being in school and financial trying to survive and the hardship people go through when going back to school and having to pay off the student loan debt (Laureate Education, 2019). This is a topic that I know people in my environment have decided just to stick with their current career instead of going back to school. They have mentioned to me that they done want the debt or the stress that comes along with the debt, so they would rather be in a career they are not happy in. I recently had a client that just graduated from high school and this as well was a concern for him, his parents could afford for him to attend college, so his fear was not being able to pay for it on his own. He was also unsure of what he wanted to do with his life career wise. This will assist me in the future to understand what theories might be good to work with, in cases like my client an adolescent fresh out of high school showing fear and anxiety for the cost of school and what he wants to do with his life.

Take Away Points

The importance of this course was one point that I feel was something to take away from.  Going into the semester, I thought I would lose interest in this topic. However, I am learning a lot of techniques which I can apply with my clients currently. This is where it is important to be informed on this topic as you never know when this topic will come up in a session. Career isn’t just about a person looking for a job it has other stressor that may impact an individual or family system (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). A second take away point of Career Expert Session was the use of technology, technology is something that keeps growing and evolving. Currently, we use technology and the Internet for almost everything. Technology advances is a tool used to help an individual search for a job, network to search for a job, create documents needed to apply for a job and assist in an individual furthering their education (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Dr. Capuzzi discussed the difference in requirements for aspiring counselors from the time he was in school. Dr. Capuzzi mentioned how the course requirement were less when he was school compared to now. This has led aspiring counselors currently to have to give not only more time to education but money to pay for the required courses that have been known to cause stress once the counselor finishes school they have a student loan debt to pay off (Laureate Education, 2019).

Public Health Care System

The terms: health care and public health are often used interchangeably. Two such widely used terms are public health and health promotion.

· Define the terms public health and health promotion.

· What are the similarities and differences between the two?

· What specific health promotion activity was provided in your community during the past one year and what was the beneficial result?

· How did Healthy People 2020 develop and what is the purpose and goals of this program?

Over the years, the public health care system has evolved due to the numerous legislative and regulatory influences. These efforts are being illustrated as legislative and regulatory pressures on the form and function of the delivery system.

Note: Click www.nursingworld.org to view a link to get a better understanding about the issues affecting the community and nation (Go to Policy and Advocacy > Congress and Federal Agencies > Legislation and Issues).

· What current legislation has had the maximum impact on the way health care is provided?

· What interest group(s) influenced the establishment of this legislation?

Mention an interest associated with a health care promotion or wellness program that, according to you, had the greatest impact on the people of the U.S. in the last three years. Provide a description of this program.
The description should include the following details:

What were the activities actually associated with the program?

How was it reported in the media?

What was it about this program that had an impact on you?

What population was involved? Why do you think the specified population was involved in the program?

Health Care and Its Related Issues

There are several ways to measure the health status of a community or an entire population. In order to understand the implications of legal and regulatory policies in health care promotion and wellness, it is mandatory to analyze the impact of the social needs of local populations on their health care issues.

· What are the benefits measuring the health status of individuals aged fifteen to sixty four years in a particular community or an entire population? What effect do these benefits have on the health status of the community or the entire population?

· Which one health statistic has had the most significant impact on the health care profession in the entire US or your community in the last year? Discuss.

· Identify one major local social issue currently being addressed by the local elected officials (major, governor, or town council).

What ramifications does this issue have on the local population?

Does this issue have any legal impact on the community? Why or why not?

For a successful health status of a community, school health is critical to our future. How can we incorporate a program within the school focusing on the safety and well-being of students along with the social needs and health care issues?

· If you are asked to develop a school health policy for an elementary school, who would be the stakeholders in this process?

· What types of resources will you need to develop a program?

· How will the focus of the program target health promotion or wellness?

· What considerations should be taken into consideration when developing the program, such as the physical and social environment?

· What factors are taken into consideration when developing a program targeting elementary school age children versus adult?

· What anticipated or perceived objections would you expect?

· As we continue to move in the twenty first century, what elementary school health or safety issues are emerging?

PART – 3 – *100 words – *include references*

Health Problems among Teens and Young Adults

The course textbook An Introduction to Community Health refers to teens and their risky behaviors. The number of single parent households with children under the age of eighteen continues to rise. Unemployment is higher for teens and young adults, especially for minority populations. Health behavior and lifestyle choices are tested during this timeframe, with tobacco use, underage drinking, abuse of prescription illegal drugs, and risky sexual behavior. Teen violence and suicide are also a cause of concern to families and the community.

· How do social and environmental factors affect teens and young adults making healthy or unhealthy decisions? How influential is the family environment?

· What motivates teens to form groups and how do negative behaviors increase when teens are involved in small or large gangs?

· What specific issues does the U.S. minority population face in terms of health issues, lack of healthcare, and risky behaviors?

· What specific type of community program would you develop if you were in charge of improving options for teens and young adults? What community members would you seek to speak with about your program proposal and how important is it to include influential community members who can help support legislation, space, or financial services to help a community program succeed?

· How will education reduce risk taking behaviors? What type of follow up and evaluation will you do to ensure a successful program?

PART – 4 – *100 words – include references*

Public Health Care Problems

The leading public health care problems in the U.S. are:

· Mental disorders

· Consumption of alcohol, nicotine, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs

The count for people suffering from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year is on the rise. This figure translates to approximately 57.7 million people currently (National Institute of Mental Disorder, 2008).

In relation to problems regarding drugs, consumption of alcohol is considered as the leading problem. In addition, the consumption of Nicotine, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs are other prominent issues (McKenzie, Pinger, & Kotecki, 2008).

· Is the diagnosis of mental illnesses still viewed with a negative attitude as was done several years ago? Why or why not?

· Are the local and national health care providers adequately responding to the needs of people suffering from mental disorders?

· Should the local health care communities be held responsible for mandating specific care and treatment for the affected population? Why or why not?

· What are the two major types of abused drugs and the age groups most likely to use them? Why is drug usage prevalent among these populations?

· What roles should the state governments’ or private health agencies or organizations play in order to prevent and control drug abuse?

PART – 5 – *150 words – include references*

Global Warming: A Major Concern

According to World Health Organization (WHO), global warming is the primary issues for concern. Noise pollution, overcrowding, traffic jams are some factors that have led to this problem. Lack of privacy is another factor in the modern times that is impacting people in ways that haven’t been examined yet. We also see a wide variance in weather patterns, such as severe hurricanes and drought conditions in the U.S.

Source: World Health Organization (WHO). (n.d.). Climate change. Retrieved from http://www.who.int/topics/climate/en/

· Examine one weather condition over the past two years in the U.S. which drastically affected the population. How can the community better prepare their families for such severe conditions?

· Do you agree with the statement that countries should be held accountable for their contribution to climate change? Why or why not?

· List some of the issues that might occur as the world’s population increases? Factor in water, food, and hazardous waste into your comments. Suggest ideas to address or avoid these issues.

According to the CDC website, violence is attributed for approximately fifty thousand deaths each year and results in over 2.5 million injuries. Homicide and suicide are the second and third leading causes of death, respectively, among US population aged fifteen to thirty four years. Hospital emergency departments treat an average of fifty five people for injuries every minute. The worst after effect of the sudden population explosion across the globe is the rise in violence.

· How have violent injuries affected a community? What steps have communities taken to decrease overall violent crimes?

· What steps can the federal or state governments take to help support communities affected from random or consistent violent acts?

· What can parents do in their homes to help educate children about risks and preventative accidents to help keep them safe? What role should parents take to reduce family violence?

· How can health promotion and wellness programs play a significant role to reduce individual or gang violence?

· How can schools and work environments increase safety measures against violent individuals or gangs entering their establishments?

· What roles should parents, neighbors, friends, health care personnel, and the community take when they observe someone who may exhibit unusual behavior or comments to help prevent potential violence? What agencies or resources are available to help communities cope and help their members seek help or assistance?
