The product of a doctoral degree is a completed and defended dissertation. To begin developing the dissertation, scholars go to the literature, synthesize the information found there, and build arguments that support the need for a study. The literature, then, is the foundational building block of the dissertation. In this assignment, you will analyze and synthesize the contents of several empirical articles to arrive at and defend a potential topic for your dissertation. Please note that this potential topic will be refined through the iterative dissertation development process as additional scholarly literature is identified, read, and synthesized and the study honed to a manageable scope.

Directions:

Dissertation Topic: Factor Responsible for Poor Utilization of Mental Health Services in Texas
Locate four peer reviewed, empirical articles related to the potential broad topic area of your dissertation. Remember, your topic area must align with your degree program. Select only articles that have been published within the last 2-3 years and that could logically be included in the literature review of your dissertation.

Write a brief description of the articles (300-350 words total) that includes the following information for each article:

1. A statement of what the authors studied.

2. A statement that generally describes the study participants.

3. A description of the study findings.

4. A statement of one limitation or future study idea identified in the article.

Write an argument (250-500 words) that presents a potential study topic for your dissertation and defends the need for the potential study. The topic must emerge from a synthesis of the limitations or future study ideas you identified above, and the argument must describe how the potential study might address the synthesized limitations or future study ideas.

Instructions

Begin this assignment by reviewing the two Haberman articles (Haberman, 1991; Haberman, 2004). Haberman coined the phrase “pedagogy of poverty” to describe the way poverty affects education.

You may find the Revelations-Emotions-Questions-Disagreements format helpful in organizing your thoughts on the subject.

This format asks you to note:

  • What were the most important revelations or insights for me from reading these articles?
  • What emotional reactions did I have, at what points in the articles, and why?
  • What questions do I have now about the topics of these articles?
  • With what might I disagree? How is that related to my own life experiences?

After you have completed your reading and reflection, locate two websites that discuss the topic of poverty and education, and write an essay addressing the following:

  • Provide the website URL and a brief summary of what is on the site and who operates the site.
  • How similar or different are views on the web sites from those of Haberman, and in what particular ways?
  • What would you say are the best-supported findings concerning the impact of poverty on education?
  • What would you say are the recommendations about improving the situation that you feel most strongly about? Provide a justification for your answer, citing Haberman and the websites you chose.
  • What do you see as the greatest short-term obstacles to carrying out your suggestions? How might you get around them?
  • What search strategy would you recommend for identifying Web resources on poverty and education?

Length: 3-5 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to the topic. Post a description of the scale you might use to evaluate treatment for the client in the case study you selected and explain why you selected that scale.

Many social work students dread taking research classes. They often view the courses as unnecessary to be a good social worker when, in fact, the opposite is true. How do you really know that your interventions are working, unless you evaluate them? As a social worker it is essential to identify in a quantifiable manner whether a treatment is helping the client or if it needs to be abandoned for another approach. In the past, social workers depended on recognizing a client’s progress through their own observations. Today, with a significant push both in the field of social work and among insurance companies to provide evidenced-based practice, social workers now are expected, more than ever, to evaluate their practice. Selecting the proper measurement/evaluation tool, based on the clients’ presenting concerns and treatment goals, will provide the evidence-based practice that is expected by the field.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources, including the course-specific case studies. Select either Abdel or Pedro from the course-specific case studies provided and search the Mental Measures Yearbook database to identify potential scales that could be used to evaluate the treatment. Select one of the scales you identified and consider why it might be useful in evaluating treatment. Finally, think about the validity and reliability of that scale.

Post a description of the scale you might use to evaluate treatment for the client in the case study you selected and explain why you selected that scale. Be sure to reference the case study you selected in your post. Finally, explain the validity and reliability of that scale.

Support your posts and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
