Discussion – Week 8

Understanding How Family Life and Gender Influence Career Development

An expanded view of clients helps career counseling professionals improve responsiveness, increase gender and family diversity awareness, and meet the ever-changing needs of the workforce and those in the process of making career-related decisions.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review this week’s Learning      Resources.
  • Think about the variation that      exists in individuals’ experiences related to family life and gender, and      how they may influence career development.
  • Select two or more specific      examples from Chapters 16 and 17 that you find particularly significant,      as well as any real-life examples, and consider how the scenarios might      influence individuals’ priorities, goals, choices, and challenges related      to work.
  • Reflect on how insights related      to gender and family life may inform a professional’s approach to and      implementation of career counseling with various individuals.

With these thoughts in mind:

Between these two theories, which one do you feel best explains your own personality development? Justify your answers with specific examples.

Erikson and Freud are two of the few theorists who have developed a lifespan approach to development. Freud’s approach to development was psychosexual while Erikson’s was psychosocial. Even though Freud’s theory is better known, Erikson’s theory remains a leading and very much applied model in personality and developmental psychology today.

When considering these two stage-oriented theories, you can directly compare the majority of their stages. These are matched in the following table:

(see doc for table)

When considering Erikson’s eight stages of development, the way a person moves through each stage directly affects their success in the next stage. Their personality is being built and shaped with each stage. At each stage, there is a turning point, called a crisis by Erikson, which a person must confront.

In this assignment, you will observe or interview two different people, each at a different stage of development. For a third observation, take a look at yourself and the stage that you are in (this stage must be different from your other two observations).

  • Record your three observations in a template. Include the following information:
    • Name
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Current developmental stage
    • Status within the stage (i.e., identity achievement or role confusion)
    • Events that have lead to this status

Download a Development Template to record your observations.

  • Summarize what you have learned about psychosocial development through these observations/interviews.
  • Summarize the trends you see in your observations/interviews regarding psychosocial development.
  • How does movement through Erikson’s stages influence personality development? Again, be specific.
  • How do Erikson’s stages of development compare to Freud’s stages? How are they similar? How are they different?
  • Between these two theories, which one do you feel best explains your own personality development? Justify your answers with specific examples.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Insert your chart at the end of your paper. Apply APA

Describe two self-biases, providing research evidence that demonstrates their effects.

This is a short essay assignment with a mixture of multiple-choice/short answer and essay questions that cite evidence or research to explain/support your answer.

Your essay answers must be in your own words with paraphrasing properly source credited.  Quotes in lieu of answering in your own words will not receive points.

Please submit your responses as a Word document (.docx file).  Make sure to number your responses so your instructor will know where one response ends and the next starts.  It is not necessary to rewrite each question in your document.  For multiple choice questions, CLEARLY indicate your response (a, b, c, or d) so that your instructor does not have to search and try to determine your response in your short answer explanation.

Your responses should be approximately one-half page each (double-spaced) for a total of three pages (not including Title and References Pages if you choose to include them).

1.  Jane is trying to decide whether she should marry Jim.  She sits down with a piece of paper and makes a list of all the positive aspects about marrying Jim, and then a list of all the negative aspects.  After looking at both lists, she can see that the good things outweigh the bad.  So, she calls Jim up and says, “OK, let’s set a date for the wedding!”  Jane’s way of making up her mind is an example of:

a.         felicific calculus

b.         distinctiveness decision making

c.          decisional framing

d.         the contrast effect

Why is this the best answer?

2.  In an experiment by Kenrick and Gutierres, male college students were asked to evaluate a potential blind date before or after watching the television show “Charlie’s Angels” (which features three glamorous actresses).  How did those who gave their ratings of the blind date after the viewing the show compare to subjects who rated the blind date before watching the show.  To what factor was this difference attributed?

3.  From Article #13 in Readings About the Social Animal, in demonstrating the “region-ß paradox,” what do Gilbert and his colleagues suggest about people’s willingness to endure painful medical procedures?

4.  It’s New Year’s Eve, and you’ve been invited to a large party where there will be lots of people you’ve never met before.  When you arrive, the person hosting the party hands you a blue party hat to wear and you put it on.  As you mingle through the crowd, you notice that some people are wearing blue hats like yours, and other people are wearing green party hats.  By the end of the evening, you realize you have spent most of your time with people wearing blue hats.  Somehow, they just seemed to be nicer people-they even dance better than those other people wearing green hats.  Moreover, a guy with a green hat bumped into you at one point during the evening and spilled your drink!  Given your knowledge of social cognition (and despite the somewhat far-fetched nature of this scenario), how could you explain your perceptions and judgments?

5.  How do cognitive biases involving the self contribute to the goal of maintaining and enhancing our view of ourselves?  Of what value are such biases, and what are the potential consequences of not having them?  Describe two self-biases, providing research evidence that demonstrates their effects.

Explain to which schedule amphetamines belong and why they are on the Schedule of Controlled Substances.

Assignment 2: LASA I—Amphetamine Use and Abuse  Aaliyah continues to struggle with balancing her work hours and her schoolwork. She has been drinking coffee to help her stay awake, but it is no longer working. She has an exam coming up and needs to stay up to study.  Aaliyah decides to take an amphetamine to stay awake to study for the exam. She promises herself that she will only take it this one time for the exam. The drug allows her to stay awake and alert while she is studying for the exam. She also feels that she is learning the material better as a result of the amphetamine. When the grades are in, Aaliyah receives an A on her work.  As the semester continues, Aaliyah turns to amphetamines more and more often to help her stay awake to complete her schoolwork. Soon, Aaliyah finds that one pill no longer keeps her awake as long as she needs.  She starts taking more than one pill at a time. She knows that taking amphetamines so often is not good for her health, and she finds she experiences an increase in headaches when she takes them, but she continues to take them because they are helping her be successful in school and at work.  Based on the case study, prepare a paper that addresses the following: •Examine the change in amphetamine use and abuse in the U.S. from the 1950s to the present. •Explain to which schedule amphetamines belong and why they are on the Schedule of Controlled Substances. •Explain the effects Aaliyah might be experiencing as a result of her regular amphetamine use. Be sure to include: ◦Acute effects, chronic effects, and withdrawal  ◦Effects on physiology (brain and body), behavior, mood, and toxicity •Give at least three indications from the case study suggesting there may be a problem with Aaliyah’s substance use. That is, describe at least three likely behaviors that Aaliyah is likely to exhibit if she is misusing amphetamines.  Determine whether Aaliyah has a substance use disorder. Include a discussion of DSM criteria. Use the template to help you make the assessment.  Write a 4-5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources
