discuss more than one, you are welcome to do that.  You may, in addition, pose a question to other students if you wish.

On the board for this week, you will be commenting thoughtfully on the video “Secret Life of Babies,” which is posted below.  You will see also see the link in the folder for this week.  It takes about 45 minutes to watch, so please plan ahead. If you have any trouble viewing the video, please contact me well in advance.  Thanks!

After watching the video, please make one original posting where you discuss one aspect of the video that you found interesting, perplexing, surprising, etc. If you wish to discuss more than one, you are welcome to do that.  You may, in addition, pose a question to other students if you wish.  This really can help stimulate discussion.  Ideas must be well-developed and you must demonstrate that you actually watched the video by referring to things you learned in the video in some way.

Citing Guidelines:

Cite the video like this.  Just put it at the end of what you write.  Use quotes if you quote.

  • 2014. The Secret Life of Babies [Motion Picture]. BBC.

Grading notes:

Students often loose the most points for not organizing and developing their ideas, not editing, and not being clear.  Please be sure you break your work into manageable paragraphs (not just one huge, on-going post) and please be sure not to just go through and answer the suggested questions.  Based on the demands of this first part of the assignment, the initial posting will be fairly long.  If you wrote two paragraphs, for example, you did not do the assignment well.

Writing Guidelines:

Your postings must include the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and complete sentences.  Please organize paragraphs and ideas carefully.  Put a space between paragraphs.  Please also be certain you write enough to full develop your thoughts.  This assignment will take several paragraphs to complete well.

Select at least ten scholarly articles from the Argosy University online library resources, Google Scholar, or other databases using key words related to the criminal behavior for which you want to develop a prevention plan.

Assignment 2: Identifying and Gathering Relevant Data

Select at least ten scholarly articles from the Argosy University online library resources, Google Scholar, or other databases using key words related to the criminal behavior for which you want to develop a prevention plan.

You should select peer-reviewed journals from the Argosy University online library resources and full-text articles on Google Scholar.

Based on the articles, identify common denominator descriptions of those perpetrating the particular criminal behavior you are working with.

Next, locate the crime rate statistics in your community for the particular criminal behavior you have chosen using the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) Uniform Crime Reports (UCR).

Create the list of selected scholarly articles, along with an outline of the common descriptors of those involved in the criminal behavior and a specific fact outline from the FBI report in a Microsoft Word document. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Assignment 2 Grading Criteria

Maximum Points

Submitted a list of ten selected scholarly articles.

24

Listed common denominator descriptions of those perpetrating the particular criminal behavior that was chosen.

40

Provided FBI statistics.

24

Wrote in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrated ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and displayed accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Describe the independent and dependent variables, their levels, operational definitions, and characteristics (e.g., scale of measurement).

Your Activities and the Hierarchy of Needs

In a Word document, try to identify and record some things that you do which are intended to satisfy needs at each of the levels of Maslow’s need  hierarchy (presented below). To get full credit you must thoroughly describe what you do at each level and why you think that activity satisfies that particular need.  Be sure to use real life examples that are different from those presented in the text.

• Physiological needs
• Safety needs
• Belongingness and love needs
• Esteem needs
• Cognitive needs
• Aesthetic needs
• Need for self-actualization

After describing the activities that you engage in at each level, write a paragraph discussing the level that you feel takes up most of your time and energy at the present time.  In other words, at what level do you find yourself functioning most of the time?  Explain what you do at that level and why it is keeping you occupied at present.

The readings for this week focus on complex ANOVAs, ANCOVAs, and MANOVAs. In this discussion we will apply those concepts to the analysis of a case study. Read the “Stroop Interference” case study presented in Chapter 20 of the Online Statistics Education text.

In the body of your posting, include an overview of the following based on the research questions, “Do males and females differ in the time it takes to correctly conduct the stroop tasks? Are there differences in the time it takes to correctly conduct the various stroop tasks – words, colors, or interference? Finally, does the effect of the stroop task type depend on the gender?”

  • Hypotheses: List the statistical notation and written explanations for the null and alternative hypotheses for the study.
  • Variables: Describe the independent and dependent variables, their levels, operational definitions, and characteristics (e.g., scale of measurement).
  • Data Analysis: You are given the information below from the ANOVA conducted. Summarize the specific type of statistical test conducted, the results obtained, and conclusions regarding the hypotheses (e.g, can we reject at the .05 or .01 level?). Be sure to describe why this specific ANOVA was selected and if a post-hoc test should be conducted.

Consider how you would  evaluate the client’s progress in this area. Create questions with  response options that would capture this phenomenon or client issue.

Discussion 1: Methods of MeasuringThe  center point of research studies is the body of data collected to  answer the research question. These data must be measured, which is the  act of taking an abstract concept (e.g., depression, anger, etc.),  sorting them out and quantifying them in some cohesive way in order to  construct meaning—but how can you measure something that is not easily  quantifiable? Choosing  an appropriate measurement tool requires consideration of a number of  different issues including reliability, validity, appropriateness for  use with a specific group or culture, availability, and potential cost.  Sometimes, social workers will attempt to create their own set of  questions to tap into or measure a concept.  This may appear to be an easy thing to do; however, writing questions to  measure a phenomenon is more challenging than it would seem. For  example, how do we know it measures what we want it to measure?  In the  first discussion this week, you will have the opportunity to create your  own questions to measure a phenomenon of your interest. In the second  discussion, you will compare the measure you created with an existing  instrument that measures the same phenomenon.

To prepare: Choose  one phenomenon or issue that a client may be dealing with (for example, depression, anxiety, or family conflict). Consider how you would  evaluate the client’s progress in this area. Create questions with  response options that would capture this phenomenon or client issue.

Identify the phenomenon you would measure and explain how you conceptualize this phenomenon.

Provide  at least 3 questions you would use to measure this phenomenon and  explain how these questions operationalize the phenomenon.

Define reliability in 2-3 sentences and give one example of how you would establish reliability for the questions you created.

Define validity in 2-3 sentences and give one example of how you would establish validity for the questions you created.

Create a measurement plan to assess the phenomenon.

Describe  the methodology you would use to collect data using your measurement  tool (your method for acquiring this research data).

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of your choices)
