What do you think should be at the heart of positive psychology – is it the notion of flourishing, or something else?

November 24th: Response paper:
Choose one of the topics presented below.
1. Please write on your first page “ Topic 1,” “Topic 2,” “Topic 3,” or “Topic 4.”
2. The length of the paper should be 4-5 pages (maximum 1,250 words).
3. You must use at least 2 academic articles from the syllabus and a third source may

come from an additional article, a lecture, or one of the videos from the syllabus. You cannot use the Doidge book as one of the academic articles but it may be used in addition.

TOPIC 1: Write about how positive psychology can further advance a field of interest (such as healthcare) or a need in society (such as nourishing our green environment) or a need in the world (such as positive peacekeeping in the middle east). A shortcut to this topic is, “Considering positive psychology’s aim to enhance human flourishing worldwide, how can the field make a significant impact on promoting healthy environments and institutions?” We want you to think big and dream, using empirically-

based constructs of positive psychology to support your vision. An example: “’Green’ is a buzzword. Individuals, homes, businesses and communities are working to support environmentally friendly living. Positive psychology can help” (And then describe the ways in which PERMA, and/or self-regulation, and/or goal-setting, etc can support this effort). Have fun.

PS. Write about how positive psychology can advance the career you are advancing. Since we have covered how positive psychology is advancing the field of education in the work of Dweck and the KIPP schools, if you are going to discuss education please do not focus on their achievements.

OR

TOPIC 2: Create a unique, comprehensive model organizing the ideas of positive psychology. We are not asking you to restate the five areas we covered or to regurgitate things you have read, but to consider a different model for how positive psychology concepts go together and interact. What do you think should be at the heart of positive psychology – is it the notion of flourishing, or something else? Can you think of a new way to unify the components of positive psychology in a novel theoretical framework? A drawing or figure is very welcome. Make this something that you’re proud of.

Discuss two personal challenges of providing this competent practice, and what you could do to increase your competency.

One of the purposes of this week’s readings and information is to assist students in engaging in careful self-reflection about their personal values concerning physical punishment, and if needed, identify potential therapeutic blind spots which may interfere with competent social work practice according to the principles and values provided by the National Association of Social Workers and as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatricians for healthy parenting practices.

Regardless of your stance on physical punishment, your profession requires you to adhere to the NASW Code of Ethics.

The NASW article provides “The practitioner’s role then is to help parents understand the negative consequences of corporal punishment and help parents find new ways of reinforcing positive behaviors in their children.”

From the readings for this week, identify three ways that you can respond competently to a client who has requested support for discontinuing physical punishment with their child(ren).  Cite your sources properly. Discuss two personal challenges of providing this competent practice, and what you could do to increase your competency.

For this assignment, you will create a public service announcement (PSA) against the use of nicotine. Select one of the options below for your PSA.

Option 1: Video Message

Create a 3-5-minute public service video message against the use of nicotine. Include the following in the PSA:

  • A description of the adverse effects of nicotine on the body.
  • At least one available resource for persons wanting to quit smoking.

Option 2: Script

Create a 3-5-minute script that outlines a therapy session between a therapist and one of the following options:

  • Directly with an adult client.
  • Directly with a teenage client and their parent.

Imagine that the client has begun smoking or vaping and is in need of education regarding nicotine and the impact of nicotine on the brain and body. Be sure that your script outlines the two-way dialogue of a therapy session that indicates a dynamic conversation between the therapist and client.

Provide any other comments to your colleague that may assist him or her in creating a more effective research proposal.

Week 6 – Interactive Assignment

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Topic and Research Design Presentation and Rationale

Prior to beginning work on this interactive assignment, it is recommended that you review the recommended resources for this week as they will assist you in the creation of an effective presentation of your Research Design.

This interactive assignment will provide you with an opportunity to create a dynamic presentation of some of the materials you are creating for your Research Proposal. This type of presentation would be used in the professional world to request Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, and potentially elicit funding, for your research.

In your presentation, summarize the main points and ideas for your Research Design. Over the course of the week, you will have the opportunity to share feedback and suggestions with your classmates and instructor, which may assist you in improving your research proposal before submitting the Research Proposal.

For this interactive assignment, create a presentation file using PowerPoint and then create a three- to five-minute screencast video of your presentation with pertinent audio that includes important points about the content of each slide. In order to make sure your video remains within the 3-5 minute time requirement, create a script for your screencast video. You must attach your script to your initial post. It is recommended you rehearse your presentation using your script to ensure that you are within the time limit and that all pertinent information is presented in a manner that is easy to understand. You may use any screencasting software of your choice (e.g., Screencast-O-Matic, Jing, etc.). A quick-start guide is available for Screencast-O-Matic (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for your convenience.

The content of the presentation must include the following:

  • A brief introduction
  • Devise a specific research question related to the topic you chose in Week One.
  • Explain the importance of the topic and research question.
  • A brief literature review
  • Evaluate published research studies on your topic found during your work on the Weeks One, Two, and Four assignments and identify two relevant published studies.
  • A description of potential methods
  • Based on what you have learned about research design options and requirements in this course, create an appropriate research approach and design to investigate your research question.
  • Provide a rationale for your design choices.
  • A discussion on ethical issues
  • Apply ethical standards to the proposed research and identify potential ethical issues that would apply. Explain how you plan to address these issues.
  • A conclusion
  • Summarize the main points of the presentation and reiterate why the proposed research is important and why it should be carried out.

In your initial discussion post, introduce your presentation and provide a link to the screencast URL.
Be sure to attach your PowerPoint presentation and script documents to your initial post.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation.  If you have a documented disability accommodation that might interfere with your ability to complete this assignment you may contact your instructor to develop a comparable alternative assignment.  If you have other issues that you feel may be a barrier to your ability to complete this course or this assignment please contact the Office of Access and Wellness at: access@ashford.edu.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

Apply the scientific method to the research problem(s) presented and comment on the appropriateness of the research question devised. If the question devised does not seem appropriate and researchable, suggest another research question that would apply to this topic. Compare the characteristics of various appropriate research paradigms related to your colleague’s chosen topic and suggest another research method that could be applied to this research question. Provide a rationale that explains how this method may be equally or more appropriate for the research question. Evaluate the ethical implications of the proposed research and suggest other issues your colleague has not mentioned. Provide any other comments to your colleague that may assist him or her in creating a more effective research proposal.

Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post. In your replies to these comments to your initial post either respectfully defend your choices providing supporting information from your research, or explain how you might incorporate the suggested changes into your research proposal.
