Social Psychology- Article Review 2

Please refer to the Module 1 content guide entitled “How Do I Read and Review a Journal Article” for a full review of the instructions on how to find relevant information within published academic research.  Within your submission, you must answer the questions listed below.  Your submission must be written in essay style, be 3-5 pages in length (double spaced), and must follow the APA guidelines for citations.  Please refer to the content guide labeled, “How do I use APA style to Cite my Sources?” in the Research Basics Module for details on how to do this. There is a grading rubric attached so you can understand how your submission will be assessed.  You will notice there are two possible scores listed for each category.  This is to allow points to be distributed differently if you are reviewing an article with one study compared to an article with more than one study. Please chose ONE of the following articles to review.

Questions

  1. What was the rationale for the current research (the answer to this should often include previous literature or theory)?
  2. What is the current hypothesis (or hypotheses if there are more than 1)?
  3. How many participants were in the study?  Describe the group of participants (gender, age, race, religion).
  4. Describe the procedure.  In other words, what happened to the participants from the time they began the study until the time it ended.  Make sure to include any measures (surveys or questionnaires) and/or materials (technology or props).
  5. Did the data support or fail to support the hypothesis (or hypotheses)?  This answer should be in plain English.  You should not be using numbers (statistics) in your answer.
  6. What are the implications of this research?  In other words, how does this work affect everyday people, theory formation, interpretation of current events etc..  Make sure to describe the social psychological phenomenon, principles, theories, and/or concepts being examined within the article.  You can reference your textbook within this answer to tie in some of the concepts we’ve learned, just make sure to use APA guidelines for citation when doing so.
  7. What were the limitations of the current study?  You do not need to use the limitations given by the author(s) of the study.  You can feel free to rely on what we’ve learned about research methods and ethics to suggest your own.  Just be sure to keep an academic tone throughout your writing.

If there were multiple studies within your article, you should also answer the following questions:

  1. What is the rationale for completing the additional study?
  2. What is the hypothesis for the additional study?
  3. How is the method different in this study from study 1?
  4. What are the conclusions from this additional study?
  5. How do these conclusions build upon those from study 1?

Why is Theory Important in Social Work?

Social Work theories help you analyze cases, understand clients, create interventions, and predict intervention results and evaluate outcomes.

  • Major Theories: Used in Social Work Practice:
    · Ecosystems Theory – often referred as Systems Theory
    · Psychodynamic Theory
    · Social Learning Theory
    · Conflict Theory
    · Developmental Theory
    · Psychosocial Development Theory
    · Rational Choice Theory/Social Exchange Theory
    · Humanistic Theory

Begin by choosing a theory from the list above.

Next you will then create a Word document 2 to 3-page document. (You may have one – two pages on content) – This is a study aide so it should include the who, when etc. Bullet points or short concise statements for learning is what I am looking for; everything you would need to know about this theory.

The assignment should be submitted in APA format to include at least 2 scholarly references.  A methods section should give detailed information about how you will conduct your proposed experiment, but should not include options or predictions of the outcome.  By reading your methods section, another researcher should be able to have all the information necessary to conduct your experiment.  This includes information about participants/subjects, where the data is collected, how the data is collected, information and references for any questionnaires used, and information for any equipment being used.  This section is procedural, and should not include any information about what you predict will happen or any results.  It is straightforward and specific.  Use complete sentences and do not use bullet-point lists.

Cultural Psychology- Delving into research

1. Research: Find a scholarly research article that discusses cultural sameness and/or cultural differences between your culture and another country that you believe is culturally different from your own. Briefly discuss the hypothesis, methods, and outcomes involved in the study. Was the hypothesis proven?

2. Compare: Go to Hofstede’s Compare Countries web page and compare your country of origin results with the other country you chose.

Click on the link, scroll down a bit, (do not purchase anything), then type the name of a country in the box and select your country from the drop down list if available. Once your country appears in the field, type another name of a country right after the first one (your own country) and select it. Compare results. By the way, you can add several countries and produce a very colorful graph with interesting results!

3. Evaluation: Drawing from Heine’s presentation in chapter 4 on considerations for conducting cross-cultural research, evaluate this study and clarify potential challenges you see.

My culture is American and the Culture I would like to compare with Chinese Culture

submit a literature review with proper APA formatting, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar that meets all of the specifications of the assignment listed above

The literature review is one of the most important components, and often the most time consuming part, of a good research proposal. Without the solid foundation of a good literature review, it is difficult to make a strong research proposal.

This week, you will work to develop a rough draft of your literature review. You will continue to develop the literature review next week based on feedback provided by your instructor. Then in week 7, you will submit a well-polished literature review as part of your final research proposal.

The following requirements should be met in your literature review:

  • Include a minimum of six scholarly sources
  • Organize in logical sections
  • Include an overview of the literature
  • Be unbiased in your presentation of information
  • Include sources and content relevant to your research questions and hypothesis; state the relevance in your literature review
  • Include a critical assessment of the sources. Do not simply include a summary of what you have read
  • A strong introduction and conclusion, including further questions for research
  • Proper APA formatting, citations, and references

Keep in mind that this is a rough draft, so the literature review does not need to be perfect. However, you should still submit a literature review with proper APA formatting, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar that meets all of the specifications of the assignment listed above. You will then receive feedback from your instructor and continue to do more research, and modify and improve your current literature review.
