One article summary (the article must be at least two pages in length)from a peer-reviewed journal for each concept you choose.

You must assemble the scrapbook as follows:

1. Provide a title with course and personal information.

2. Provide a table of contents of your scrapbook.

3. Choose five (5) topics that appeal to you the most, and provide the following items for each one:

  1. One picture (graphic format is not important) that you believe best captures the concept.
  2. Two Web sites with two to three sentences that describe the Web site for each concept
  3. One article summary (the article must be at least two pages in length)from a peer-reviewed journal for each concept you choose. You must include a means of gaining access to a copy of the article (e.g., the appropriate doi or an active hyperlink) in the references section.
  4. Three to five paragraphs describing why you chose the pictures, Web sites, and articles for each concept.

4. A five- to seven-page (double-spaced) personal reflection paper. You must include at least two references (citations within the paper). The reflection paper is your chance to describe how you interpret and understand the material. Include any thoughts about how you perceive you can use the information learned from the course.

Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the Frost e-book, Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology, and the required journal articles for this week. Also review last week’s PSY635 Week Two Discussion Scenario (Links to an external site.). In that scenario, the three instructors realized there are limits to the insights they can gain through anonymous counting of discussion posts. The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

In your initial post, compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the  assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.

Describe any potential ethical or legal concerns related to this research. Provide a rationale backed by authoritative references to support your position.

Assignment 2: Correlation and Regression

A human resources (HR) manager wants to know if annual performance review scores can be predicted by the number of vacation days taken during the year and the number of dependents an employee claims. She randomly pulls the vacation, W-2, and performance review records of twenty employees. The data is presented below.

EmployeeNumber of Vacation Days TakenNumber of DependentsOverall Performance Rating (from 1 [lowest] to 4 [highest])11022.921232.43104241522.351433.261251.971313.481532.191622.9101432.4111342121222.3131133.2141051.9151313.4161332.1171422.9181833.4191743201403.3

Using the above data, run a correlation matrix and then run a regression analysis in Microsoft Excel that will answer the human resources (HR) manager’s question. Examine the results and consider the implications. Write a 3- to 4-page paper based on the results and implications. Make sure to include your data printout and justify your responses. In your paper, address the following questions:

  • Identify the R-squared value for this data set, along with the R-value. Explain what each means.
  • Describe what the F-test and the p value tell us in general and name each for these data sets and analyses.
  • Explain what can be learned from the multiple regression that may not be known from the correlation matrix.
  • Justify whether performance review scores can be predicted by the number of days of vacation taken, dependents claimed, or vacation days taken in combination with the number of dependents. Support your position.
  • Describe any potential ethical or legal concerns related to this research. Provide a rationale backed by authoritative references to support your position.

Your final product should include your Microsoft Excel computations and a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document. Utilize a minimum of three scholarly sources.

Use the following headings and subheadings to organize your paper:

  • Defining and explaining concepts
    • Prediction
    • R-squared and R-value
    • F-test
    • p value
    • Correlation coefficient versus regression weight (beta value)
  • Results
  • Discussion and implications of results
  • References
  • Appendix (Microsoft Excel printout)

Submission Details:

  • By the due date assigned, save your paper as M4_A2_Lastname_Firstname.doc and Microsoft Excel computations as M4_A2_Lastname_Firstname.xls and submit these to the Submissions Area.

Remember at least 3 paragraphs per question and APA

In Chapter 8 of the webtext, you’ll read Demystifying Decision-Making, an article by Maud Purcell (2016) that offers four steps in the decision making process:

1. Clearly define the problem

2. Brainstorm possible choices

3. List the pros and cons of each choice

4. Engage your feelings as well as your intellect

In this discussion, we want you to engage in the decision making process as it relates to earning your degree. In your post, focus on step 1 (clearly defining the problem) and step 2 (brainstorm possible choices) of the decision making process.

Answer these questions in your discussion post:

· What problem will earning your degree solve?

· Brainstorm three things that you can do today to start to prepare yourself for your future goals.

For example, maybe you are earning your degree at Strayer to change your career from retail to accounting. The problem that you are working to solve is how to gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials that will allow you to get a job as an entry-level accountant.

Similarly, three things that you can do today to help with your goal might be:

· Create a profile on LinkedIn

· Network with accounting firms in my area to find out what they look for in new hires

· Research and join a professional association for accounting

If you need help brainstorming activities, check out our Career Services through iCampus.

To receive full credit, remember to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Your original should be at least 7 sentences, and your reply should be 4 sentences.

Finally, please remember to label your arguments. This makes it easier for them to be graded. Include your name, course section, and the date at the top of your assignment document.

Constructing Deductive and Inductive Arguments

Arguments consist of premises and conclusions. Premises are structured so as to lend support to conclusions. The kind of support that a premise lends to a conclusion allows us to distinguish between deductive and inductive arguments. This week, you will be constructing both kinds of arguments.

1.  In three premises each, construct one example of each following deductive argument form:

·  Modus ponens

·  Modus tollens

·  Hypothetical syllogism

·  Disjunctive syllogism

Make sure your arguments are deductively valid and that your examples are your own. Here are two examples of the general format that your arguments should take:

Modus ponens:

1.  If it is raining, then it is pouring.

2.  It is raining.

3.  Therefore, it is pouring.

Modus tollens:

1.  If Jack went to the grocery store, then he bought cookies.

2.  Jack did not buy cookies.

3.  Therefore, Jack did not go to the grocery store.

2.  After you construct the preceding deductive argument forms, construct a three premise syllogism. For example:

1.  All men are mortal.

2.  Socrates is a man.

3.  Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

3.  After you construct a three premise syllogism, construct one of each of the following inductive argument patterns:

·  Induction by enumeration

·  Reasoning by analogy

·  Statistical induction

·  Higher-level induction

Your examples of inductive argument patterns should not be expressed in premise form. Rather, they should be informally expressed in writing. You should have one paragraph for each pattern. Be as detailed as possible.

Finally, please remember to label your arguments. This makes it easier for them to be graded. Include your name, course section, and the date at the top of your assignment document.
