What are the pros and cons of substance abuse treatment models used within a prison setting? What would you propose to help remove limitations to substance abuse treatment in a prison setting?

Potency and efficacy are two of the most misunderstood concepts in the area of drug use. Many overdoses occur because the potency of the newly purchased drug is higher than that of the previously used drug. These concepts apply to drugs of abuse as well as over-the-counter medications.

“Steven has a headache. He reaches for some pain relievers in his medicine cabinet. He finds two bottles: acetaminophen (325 mg) and ibuprofen (200 mg). The instructions for the acetaminophen say take 2 tablets

(650 mg total). The instructions for the ibuprofen say take 2 tablets (400 mg total). Steven assumes that because the dose is higher for the acetaminophen, it must work better.”

To assist Steven with making an educated decision about which medication to take, complete the following:

  • What are potency and efficacy, and how are they different?
  • What other factors might influence Steven’s decision?

Write your initial response in 150–200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

  • What are the pros and cons of substance abuse treatment models used within a prison setting?
  • What would you propose to help remove limitations to substance abuse treatment in a prison setting?
  • Are there any ethical complications to treatment in a prison setting?

Explain how a decision to ground your recommendations in a different theoretical framework might have affected your decisions and actions.

Prenatal Development

With the evolution of Google, accessible information, the study of genetics, prenatal tests, social media, and many other sources of information for new parents, the process of preparing for a healthy baby can be overwhelming.

For this first journal assignment, reflect on the substance and theoretical foundation of what you have learned this week about prenatal development. Then write a reflective essay that addresses the following:

  • Comment on how this week’s learning and materials compliment, oppose, and/or affect change in your positions and attitudes on the relevant subject matter.
  • From this reflection, formulate and articulate three pieces of advice to help expecting parents ensure healthy development of their baby.
  • Analyze how your recommendations are grounded in relevant theory.
  • Explain how a decision to ground your recommendations in a different theoretical framework might have affected your decisions and actions.
  • Based on your response to the previous question, describe what you see as the proper or optimal way to think about the relationship between theory and practice.
  • Explain how the recommendations you selected help to ensure healthy development.
  • Explain how ethical concerns might arise related to things such as prenatal tests and predictions.

Be sure to consider what you read about in Chapters 1 and 2 of the course textbook relating to developmental theory and the evaluation of research evidence for claims.

Base your paper on the research you gather and not on your opinion. You may use both popular and scholarly references

Create a PowerPoint presentation of 16-18 slides for the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-IV (MCMI-IV).

Address and include the following in your PowerPoint:

  1. A title, introduction, and conclusion slide
  2. What is the MCMI-IV and what does it measure?
  3. What are the legal and ethical requirements for a professional to administer, interpret, and/or report the results of an MCMI-IV?
  4. How would information gathered from the MCMI-IV assist in the intake and treatment planning process?
  5. Describe potential treatment strategies that would likely be incorporated into a treatment plan based on results from an MCMI-IV.
  6. Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Expand upon the information included in the slide and do not simply restate it. Please ensure the speaker notes include a minimum of 50 words.
  7. A reference slide with a minimum of four scholarly referencesHere are the instructions that you were given during Week 1 for the Final Project. Before submitting your Final Project at the end of Week 11, review the instructions to make sure you have included all the required elements in the assignment you submit:Select one of the following cases. Then, select a specific subject for the focus of your paper that can be discussed in a 10- to 12-page research paper. Imagine that you are assisting an attorney in the case who has requested that you research the specific focus area, and provide a concise report to inform the court about the topic.

Required cases and possible focus subjects:

Jodi Arias, convicted of killing her boyfriend

    ·  Battered woman’s syndrome

    Final Project Requirements

    ·  Submit all the required weekly Assignments throughout the course that are related to your Final Project. Completion of each project Assignment component contributes toward a successful final project grade.

    ·  Base your paper on the research you gather and not on your opinion. You may use both popular and scholarly references. (Resources explaining proper use of scholarly and non-scholarly resources are available in the Learning Resources section.)

    ·  Use APA format, in text and in the reference list.

    ·  Ensure that you have minimal writing errors.

    ·  Final paper length: 11 pages total, not including the title page, abstract, and bibliography.

    ·  Final paper structure:

o  Brief biographical summary (2–3 paragraphs)

o  Introduction to the issue to be discussed

o  Summary of the current scholarly research about the issue

    o  Conclusion (1–3 paragraphs)

Week 7proj comments – this looks good, however, be sure to include research describing what BWS is, and research regarding BWS and subsequent murder cases. The paper has to be 10-12 pages not including the Title, Abstract or Reference pages, so you will need more material than just facts about the case. This is where psych research intersects with the law 🙂

Week 6 proj comments – this is a very good annotated bibliography. However, remember your research must be directly applicable to your subtopic on the Jodi Arias case and contribute to the court regarding her case. The last article you cited here has no relevance as it is related to homicides in the UK. Also, regarding your first article, as you know this was not a murder-suicide, it was straight murder.

Describe how you would use these skills in practice and how your presentation can be used to develop your career and in mentoring peers on current research [1-2 slides]

Choose one of the topics below for your research and then go to the Purdue Global Library and find another article that discusses your selected topic.

  • Be sure to select a peer-reviewed article so that you know your research studies are primary academic sources.
  • Be selective in choosing an article that will extend insights beyond common knowledge regarding the brain and human behavior.
  • Use your article to point to new directions and information in the field regarding your topic.

Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation which incorporates speaker notes throughout (not including title and reference slides). Address the following in your presentation:

  • Introduction (let the audience know the purpose of the presentation and rationale for why you selected the topic). [1 slide]
  • Describe the highlights of the research studies. [2-3 slides]
  • Explain the affected brain areas including specific information about how it affects behavior. [2-3 slides]
  • Discuss how this research relates to your career and other professionals in the field [2 slides]
  • Describe how you would use these skills in practice and how your presentation can be used to develop your career and in mentoring peers on current research [1-2 slides]
  • Conclusion [1 slide]
