Note how you were feeling, what your brain was doing and engaged in before, during and after the exercise. 

This exercise is worth 20 points. To turn in your work you will need to scan it in and created a PDF file (please send a copy of the original work as well so I can see what you were trying to copy). You are not being graded on your artwork rather on your ability to describe your experience in two to three paragraphs. Talk about how you were feeling prior to the exercise, during it and when it was done. Comment on what you think of this exercise in creativity and relaxation, how it felt to actually do the drawing, how you felt during and after the inverted drawing exercise. Note how you were feeling, what your brain was doing and engaged in before, during and after the exercise.

According to Kalat for almost all right handed people and more than 60% of left handers, the left hemisphere of the brain controls speech while the right hemisphere is responsible for spatial relationships such as what an object would look like if it was rotated. The left brain is verbal, logical, rational and analytical while the right brain deals with images, patterns, dreams, analogies and new ideas. Because of this difference in processing, the right brain is more conducive to the relaxation response (Davis, Eshelman, McKay, 2000).

Using the imaginative and creative part of the brain can be relaxing. This exercise is adapted from The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook (pg 58).I used this exercise in a Stress and Coping course. This exercise draws on the theory and work by Betty Edwards an art teacher and researcher (see the vase-face exercise on the moodle site). She forces her students to shift from thinking about a drawing exercise to intuiting the drawing exercise by asking them to draw the image upside down.

The inverted drawing exercise is designed to cognitively shift you from labeling, logical, rational mode to a nonverbal, visual, intuitive mode the left brain can’t process. After the inverted drawing exercise, according to Edwards, “students reported less time urgency, less attachment to meaning, and a heightened sense of alertness, while feeling relaxed, calm, confident and exhilarated.”

Text Box: Find a quiet place to draw where you will not be disturbed. Play music if you like. Choose a drawing that interests you from an art book. Turn the drawing upside down and begin to copy what you see. Do not turn the drawing right side up until you have completed your artwork. Finish the drawing in one time period allow at least 35-40 minutes. Set a timer if this helps. To begin: Look at the inverted drawing for a minute and take in the lines, angles and shapes. You can see how it fits together, when you draw start at the top and copy each line, moving from line to line, putting it together like a puzzle. Do not name parts as you draw. Take your time, line to line, don’t make the exercise hard. Allow your movements to be easy and slow. After you’ve finished drawing, take a moment to recognize how you feel and your state of mind. Do you feel calm and relaxed? Did you lose track of time, were you able to turn off the left brain chatter? Did you allow yourself to not label the parts, or judge and criticize your work? Now turn the drawing right side up and see how you did.     • For example, if you are looking to attend graduate school to become a counselor, identify areas that you may want to include in your as knowledge and skills on your resume.
    • If you are going to be pursuing a career in an organization, how might understanding personality types support your success? How could this be clearly demonstrated in your cover letter or resume?
    • If you are a parent or community leader, what aspects could support your decision making in these contexts?
    • There are numerous possibilities about what developed knowledge and skills you believe will support you the most and will be guided by your goals, and even perhaps your goal steps addressed in your Week 2 Journal.

The ability to organize and effectively present information is essential for securing employment and for effective performance as a professional. Fundamental skills include both appropriate verbal communication and visual design using presentation software to convey content to an intended audience.

Create and record a slide presentation with accompanying verbal narration, which comprises a comprehensive synthesis of your research and recommendations concerning ethical and cultural considerations of a case study and a research-based plan to resolve the case.

While examining your previous assessments and making decisions about the essential information that will be presented, it is recommended that you begin by creating an outline and comparing it to the Comprehensive Case Presentation Scoring Guide to ensure you have specifically taken into account and addressed all of the grading criteria in detail.

Slideshow Instructions

You may use PowerPoint to create this slideshow, or if you wish, you may use Prezi or some other option. However, PowerPoint is best supported by the resources provided. You are responsible for making your presentation work.

For each assessment you have written in the course thus far, create 8–10 slides that provide a high-level explanation or summary. In other words, you should create a minimum of 24 slides, plus a title slide, introduction slide, conclusion slide, and references slide. Use a clear and concise structure.

  • Title slide: On the first slide, enter:
    • A brief title of the presentation. Your name.
    • Course number and title.
    • Capella University.
    • FlexPath instructor’s name.
  • Introduction slides: Provide a brief introduction to your presentation. Describe what you will be discussing in your presentation.
  • Content slides: Provide a high-level overview of the salient points from Assessments 1–3.
  • Conclusion slides: Briefly summarize your presentation. Provide a concise summary about the topics addressed.
  • Reference slides: List all references cited in your presentation.

All slides should include presenter notes (a minimum of three paragraphs) of what you will say for each slide. You may use information directly from your previous assessments when writing presenter notes. However, entries should be edited so that they are written as if you are speaking to an audience or a potential employer, for example. You can utilize the presenter notes when recording the audio piece of the presentation.

Voice-Over Instructions

Your presentation should include a comprehensive audio voice-over presenting essential information for each slide. Elements of good verbal delivery include:

  • Appropriate volume and clear pronunciation.
  • Avoidance of audible fidgeting and distracting interjections.
  • Variety of intonation and pacing and appropriate use of pauses.

Important: Before you record your presentation, it is recommended that you allow ample time to practice your presentation until you are comfortable with these elements.

What does it mean to be an ethical leader? How is ethical leadership demonstrated in social work practice? As a leader in the social work profession, you have to achieve a balance between your professional and personal ethics. At times, these may be aligned with each other, but there may be situations in which they conflict. Because leadership includes value and moral dimensions, your character, actions, and goals as a social work administrator should reflect ethical leadership.

For this Discussion, consider the characteristics of ethical leadership and the challenges associated with practicing ethical leadership.
