about the media and disaster mythology. Why do Americans believe disaster mythology? The primary source of disaster information for most Americans is the mass media. Images of what Chernobyl survivors must have endured have been created through exposure to television and print news. Similarly, the mass media influenced the general public’s perception of the damage resulting from Hurricane Andrew in Homestead, Florida, in August 1992. Since most Americans rely upon various forms of mass media to obtain information about what occurs before, during, and after a disaster, the accuracy of their perception is dependent upon the media. 

If the media accurately portrays how citizens and emergency personnel respond, the viewer is more likely to gain an accurate perception, and vice versa. To explain the process by borrowing from the symbolic interaction theory, the looking-glass self is developed through your interaction with others. Your perception of yourself is based upon your perception of others’ perceptions of you. People generally act as if the perception is reality, which, of course, may be a misconception. Regardless of whether your perception is accurate, you usually respond on the basis of it being real.
