What are three controversies discussed in the Halter, Rolin-Kenny, & Dzurec (2013) article? Give your opinions about these controversies.  From your point view, are these legitimate concerns? Why or why not?

Week 2 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Analyzing Basic Applied Research

There are very different views of what types of evidence are most credible in evaluating the effectiveness of psychological treatment research. In this discussion you will analyze basic applied psychological research as well as evaluate how researchers applied a research process in the development of specific components. To begin, read the following articles (which can be accessed through the ProQuest database in the Ashford University Library):

  • “Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology: Implications for Research and Research Training”
  • “Practice-Based Evidence: Back to the Future”
  • “Psychological Treatments: Putting Evidence into Practice and Practice into Evidence”

After reading the articles listed above, select two of them.  Analyze the basic applied research within each of your two selected articles by answering the following questions:

  • What is the main point-of-view in each article?
  • What are the primary assumptions each author makes?
  • Which author are you inclined to agree with?  Support your choice with scholarly reasoning and cite your evidence.

You are required to include one peer-reviewed source that was published within the last five years to support your perspective.  You may not use any of the sources that were assigned for this course.  For assistance finding articles view the “Searching for Articles” and the “Peer-Reviewed Articles” tutorials which are available under Tutorials on the Getting Research Help tab at the top of the Ashford University Library homepage.

Week 2 discussion 2

this discussion you will be evaluating contributions of psychological research in the applied context of the DSM-5. To begin, read the DSM-5 section entitled, “Conditions for Further Study” (Section III of the DSM-5) and the article titled  “An Overview of the DSM-5: Changes,Controversy, and Implications for Psychiatric Nursing.”

Then, address the following points in your post:

  • What are three controversies discussed in the Halter, Rolin-Kenny, & Dzurec (2013) article? Give your opinions about these controversies.  From your point view, are these legitimate concerns? Why or why not?

  • Name a disorder identified as requiring significantly more research and study from the DSM-5 section entitled, “Conditions for Further Study” (Section III of the DSM-5). Construct a research question that is pertinent to the disorder you selected.

  • Briefly outline a research method that could be used to investigate the disorder based on one of the research methods presented in your textbook.

Create a presentation and write-up (300-600 words) that associates psychological theory with substance use. Consider the following in your presentation and write-up:

Develop a PowerPoint presentation of 15-18 slides, addressing neglect and abuse of dependent adults and the elderly. Create speaker notes for each of the slides. Include the following in your presentation:

Part 1: Substance Use
1.    Physical consequence of substance use disorders
2.    Emotional consequences of substance use disorders
3.    Cognitive consequence of substance use disorders
4.    Spiritual consequences of substance use disorders (end-of-life)

Part 2: Abuse and Neglect
1.    Common forms of vulnerable adult and elderly neglect
2.    Warning signs of vulnerable adult and elderly abuse
3.    Legal and ethical considerations for reporting abuse and/or neglect of vulnerable adults and the elderly

In addition, include slides for a title, introduction, conclusion, and references (four slides minimum).

Include a minimum of four scholarly references in your presentation

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

Create a presentation and write-up (300-600 words) that associates psychological theory with substance use. Consider the following in your presentation and write-up:

  1. What explanation can psychology give to explain the use of substances? Be sure to include the media influences that are represented in your poster (e.g., advertisements for the drug, or PSA clips against the drug) as well as information presented in the text or other Internet sources.
  2. What health hazards are associated with the use of the substances represented in your poster?
  3. Is addiction to this drug treatable using psychological techniques? Why or why not? What techniques might be useful?

At Least two scholarly sources must be used in addition to the text.  These can be websites as long as they are scholarly in nature.

Post(2 to 3) your explanation of which group research design and data collection method from those outlined in the Resources you selected as appropriate for the “Social Work Research: “Planning a Program Evaluation” case study and why.

Group programs are common in social work. Just as with other types of programs, social workers must understand the options available to them and know how to select the appropriate research design.

For this Discussion, you evaluate group research design methods that can be used for an outcome evaluation of a foster parent training program. You also generate criteria to be measured in the program.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the “Social Work Research: Planning a Program Evaluation” case study in this week’s resources, Plummer, S.-B., Makris, S., & Brocksen S. (Eds.). (2014b). Social work case studies: Concentration year. Retrieved from http://www.vitalsource.com , and the section of “Basic Guide to Outcomes-Based Evaluation for Nonprofit Organizations with Very Limited Resources”, titled “Overview of Methods to Collect Information.”

Post(2 to 3) your explanation of which group research design and data collection method from those outlined in the Resources you selected as appropriate for the “Social Work Research: “Planning a Program Evaluation” case study and why.

Then, generate criteria to be measured using the research design by identifying a specific outcome and a method for measuring that outcome. Specify who will collect the data and how the data will be collected.

How will you determine if a client is suffering from an anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder, rather than a substance-induced disorder?

Max Points: 80
Details:

Part 1: Case Studies

Identify the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria that you notice in the case studies below and explain how the client meets the criteria. Include the diagnosis that these symptoms are related to. Your response to each case study should be 50 to 75 words.

  1. Allyson is a 25-year-old who works from home. She is happy with her work-at-home job, because she prefers not to be around people. She is afraid she will say or do something that is embarrassing. She has seen a therapist who referred her to a psychiatrist who prescribed antianxiety medication. More recently, she has been taking more than prescribed and continues to increase the dose a little each week because she finds that she does not feel as good with less.
  2. Karen is a 35-year-old wife and mother whose husband has become concerned about her drinking. He has noticed that she always appears to have a drink in hand, and when he asks her about it, she says that it is ginger ale or a coke; however, he believes she is mixing vodka with those drinks. Just recently, she had a DWI, and he confronted her about her drinking, after which she promised that she would stop. However, when she did stop, he noticed that she was constantly worrying, restless, and irritable.
  3. Mary is a 25-year-old single woman who currently is in a doctoral program. Mary has developed an extreme fear of germs and she is afraid of getting sick. Mary washes her hands 10-20 times per day. There are times when she is late for an appointment due to her needing to ensure that her hands are clean. She cleans her house constantly and often does not have time to complete her studies as a result. She experiences a great deal of anxiety when she is in situations where she is not able to control the environment. Some of her family and friends have commented on her behavior, which she admits to being a bit excessive, but she also states how easy it is to get sick and how many germs are out there.

Part 2: Treatment Scenarios

Provide a 50- to 75-word response to each of the following scenarios:

Imagine that you are working with a client who has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Select an anxiety disorder from the DSM-5 and discuss the approach you would you use for treating this client.

Imagine that you are working with a client who has been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. What approach would you use for treating this client?

How will you determine if a client is suffering from an anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder, rather than a substance-induced disorder?

Include at least two scholarly references in your assignment.
