Week 6: Social-Cognitive Theories

Tony grew up in an impoverished inner-city community. He was raised by a single mother and had to help with his four younger siblings. As he entered his teen years, the difficulties of living and growing up in his neighborhood began to take their toll. He was skipping school and routinely in trouble with the law. Yet a school guidance counselor recognized Tony’s innate intelligence, his talent as a leader, and his natural charisma, and intervened on his behalf.

Then what happened to Tony? As you might guess, there are many possible outcomes. Here are two extremes: By the time Tony was 20 …

… He had graduated with honors from high school and secured a scholarship to attend college. Since receiving his B.S. in Psychology, Tony has entered graduate school and is working toward an M.S. in Human Resource Management. Tony feels excited and hopeful about his future.

… He had been arrested and convicted of leading a car-theft operation, and went to prison. Since serving his time and being released, Tony has been unsuccessful in finding a job. He feels angry and hopeless about his future.

Consider the clues in Tony’s story about what you will explore as you examine social-cognitive theories of personality. What role has Tony played in how his life is turning out and how he thinks about his future? What are social influences on Tony, such as where he grew up and the guidance counselor who intervenes? How might a social-cognitive theorist explain these very different outcomes for Tony?

Your work in this final week of the course will offer answers. You will consider distinguishing features of social-cognitive theories of personality and how social origins of behavior and cognitive—or thought—processes can shape a person’s development.

Discussion: Testing Reciprocal Determinism

Recall the story of Tony from the Week 6 introduction and consider the principle of reciprocal determinism, which was discussed in the reading. Your course text defines the term as “the mutual, back-and-forth effects of variables on one another; in social-cognitive theory, a fundamental causal principle in which personal, environmental, and behavioral factors are viewed as causally influencing one another” (Cervone & Pervin, 2019, p. 424). How might different personal, environmental, and behavioral factors have causally influenced both the positive and negative outcomes for Tony?

Naturally, it is difficult to answer that question about Tony because you have only so much information about him. However, someone that you know a great deal about is yourself and your own experiences. For this Discussion, you will explore the concept of reciprocal determinism by applying it to an experience in your own life.

To prepare:

  • Review the reading in the course text this week, paying particular attention to the explanation of reciprocal determinism on pp. 344 and 345.
  • Consider a personal experience you feel comfortable sharing with colleagues that you could analyze from the perspective of reciprocal determinism.
  • Think back to your response to the question of what causes personality in the Week 1 Discussion. Consider your answer from the perspective of reciprocal determinism and whether you would like to change or amend your response.
By Day 3

Post an explanation that includes the following:

  • Describe an experience in your life that demonstrates the principle of reciprocal determinism. Explain your experience in terms of the interactions of your behaviors, your personality characteristics, and the impact of your environment.
  • Based on your understanding of reciprocal determinism, explain whether your thinking has changed and, if so, how you would amend your Week 1 Discussion answer. Include your reasoning for keeping the original answer or changing it.
  • What are the most useful concepts that you will take away from this course? How have the concepts helped you in understanding human behavior and, specifically, your relationships with family and friends? How can the concepts contribute to success in your future career?

Prepare: Knowing how to thoroughly research a topic (international drug trafficking) is extremely important while achieving your education. You may be asked to support your information with peer-reviewed scholarly resources, but how can you find this type of resource? The Ashford University Library allows you to search through different avenues to find the requested types of resources. You can narrow your search by the author, year published, title, subject, and by indicating what type of resource you are looking for. You even have access to a librarian if you need some guidance in finding more resources on your topic.

Reflect: Given that you have been in college for awhile, it’s time to reflect on what you have learned through the use of the Ashford University Library in relation to how you learned to acquire new information from a variety of sources.

Write:  in a two- to three-paragraph response with each paragraph consisting of five or more sentences,

  • Describe your experiences using resources, including concerns encountered when conducting academic research through the Ashford University Library. Areas of concern may include developing a research strategy, using the search function within a database, or evaluating sources.

I need help with an annotated bibliography on a topic I chose for my paper.

The topic I have chosen for my annotated bibliography is the psychological impact of the re-emerging trend of multigenerational living.

I have the peer-reviewed journals I am using in pdf form. The instructions for the assignment are below.

An APA formatted Annotated Bibliography of at least 6 peer-reviewed, evidence-based academic journal articles. This assignment requires a properly formatted title page, an abstract page and a Reference citation for each article followed by a brief summary (or “annotation”) of what the article is about.  An annotated bibliography is more than just a list of articles; that is what would go on Reference List.  Instead each article listing in an annotated bibliography must be followed by a 2 to 3 paragraph summary of the article’s contents (i.e., what the research questions were, who the study participants were, what data was collected and in what format it was collected in (e.g., surveys or interviews), what was found in the study and what limitations of the study were highlighted by the authors.) Remember you are writing succinct, short synopses of each article since the term “Annotated” means that each source listed must include directly below its reference information the description of what the source covers.  After each source description, please conclude with a  short statement (2 to 3 paragraphs long) of how the respective source is related to one or more of your other sources and how they link to your overall topic.  Merely copying the article’s abstract and submitting it as an annotation is  prohibited, and will result in a zero score. Also quoting isn’t needed or accepted for this assignment either. Instead summarize the aforementioned information in your own words.   This assignment must be completed per the course general writing standards, in APA format and show evidence of meaning making after engagement with the articles.  It requires a title page and abstract. Your paper should be at least 5 pages. You will  NOT include a reference page. You will have included full reference information above each annotation entry as provided for you in the week 2 lesson sample. The title page and abstract do not count in the 5 page minimum length, but if you include all of the required information, each of your annotation entries will be about 3/4ths of a page since:You will have the reference information double spaced above each annotation in proper APA format      You will then have the  single spaced annotations of 2 to 3 paragraphs containing the required information below each reference      And then you will have a one paragraph statement of each articles relevance to each other and to your overall topic at the end of the annotation.
