How might lack of acceptance of the value or viability of the CC/IC model by stakeholders, lack of awareness of the clinical competencies of various members of the team, barriers to financial reimbursement for services, and lack of integration of support services within the practice cause a breakdown in efficacy?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, be certain to have read all the required resources for this week.

The collaborative practice of clinicians across disciplines requires a shared language, appreciation of diagnostic and therapeutic paradigms, and recognition of appropriate roles within the health care team.  This collaborative environment is at the heart of a health care system that utilizes the skills and expertise of all its team members in appropriate and extended roles. This model of care delivery is often called integrated care (IC) or collaborative care (CC). Although this model is endorsed by many professional societies and agencies, the CC/IC care delivery model can fail due to multiple factors.

In your initial post, consider the clinical partnerships that result within the CC/IC delivery model. Integrating concepts developed from different content domains in psychology, address the following questions.

  • How might health care teams achieve therapeutic goals for individual clients?
  • How does this support health literacy?
  • What factors might lead to the failure of the CC/IC delivery model?
  • How might lack of acceptance of the value or viability of the CC/IC model by stakeholders, lack of awareness of the clinical competencies of various members of the team, barriers to financial reimbursement for services, and lack of integration of support services within the practice cause a breakdown in efficacy?
  • What supportive interventions within the CC/IC model address such issues?

In addition, consider how successful health care models assume an understanding of each profession’s competencies and responsibilities. For example, primary care providers (PCPs) are sometimes unaware of the abilities and practice scope of psychology professionals.

  • Identify methods of targeted intervention and education for PCPs that might alleviate potential issues for the CC/IC model.
  • Explain how the APA Ethical Code of Conduct can be used to guide decisions in these complex situations.
  • Evaluate and comment on the potential work settings where you might find the CC/IC model. In what ways might this model provide more job satisfaction?

Respond to at least one of your colleague’s Discussion assignment postings in one of the following ways: Ask a probing question, and provide insight into how you would answer your probing question and why.

Week 5: Prejudice – Interpersonal Attraction

This week, you examine prejudice, a hostile or negative attitude toward a distinguishable group of people based solely on their membership in that group. People are prejudiced against many aspects of identity: nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation (e.g., liberals, conservatives, feminists), social membership (e.g., fraternity and sorority members), appearance (e.g., redheads, short people), and even professions and hobbies. Prejudice is clearly ubiquitous and it affects all of us—majority group members as well as minority group members.

You also examine the converse—what makes people like each other initially and how relationships, romantic and friendship, progress. You explore the meaning of love, how new technologies shape attraction and social connections, what brings satisfaction in close relationships, and research about romantic breakups.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Explain the impact of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination
  • Apply theory to explain sources of, motives for, and components of prejudice
  • Identify and apply concepts, principles, and processes related to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination
  • Compare rules and expectations related to elements of relationships including cultural elements
  • Apply concepts and theories of attachment and attraction in friendship and romantic relationships
  • Apply concepts and theories of attachment and attraction in friendship and romantic relationships in different cultures
  • Identify and apply concepts, principles, and processes related to relationships and attraction
  • Explain how new technology has shaped attraction and social connections

Discussion: Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Stereotypes are beliefs about the typical characteristics of members of a group. Prejudice is the evaluation of a group or of an individual based on membership in a group. Prejudice commonly is based on race or ethnicity, but also may be based on socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, weight or physical appearance, sexual orientation, age, disability, and/or other such characteristics. Discrimination is the behavioral component of prejudice, typically demonstrated by negative behavior toward a person based on prejudicial attitudes. Together, these three concepts in social psychology result in highly destructive beliefs, behaviors, and interactions about, toward, and with others. If discrimination is to be reduced in society, it is essential to understand where prejudice comes from, how it is sustained, and how it can be reduced.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 13 in your course text, Social Psychology, focusing on how people learn prejudice, common motives for prejudice, and the various theories of prejudice.
  • Select a twentieth- or twenty-first-century example of prejudice against a group in which you are not a member. For your example, think about the stereotype that leads to the prejudice and the resulting negative behaviors (discrimination). In other words, how does the prejudice depicted in your example impact individuals and society? How can the prejudice be reduced?
By Day 3

Post a brief explanation of one twentieth- or twenty-first-century example of prejudice against a specific group and identify associated stereotypes and discriminatory behaviors. You should not be a member of the group and you should not actively oppose the group in your Discussion. Explain an effect of this prejudice on individuals or society. Use specific examples. Then, apply elements of theory from your readings to explain a cause of this specific prejudice and to recommend a means of reducing this specific prejudice, either at the individual or societal level.

Notes:

  • Name the group you are discussing in the subject line of your post.
  • Support the responses within your Discussion post, and in your colleague reply, with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources.
  • You are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleague’s postings. After clicking on the “Post to Discussion Question” link, select “Create Thread” to create your initial post.
By Day 5

Respond to at least one of your colleague’s Discussion assignment postings in one of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question, and provide insight into how you would answer your probing question and why.
  • Ask a probing question, and provide the foundation, or rationale, for the question.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting by offering a new perspective or insight.
  • Agree with a colleague and offer additional (new) supporting information for consideration.
  • Disagree with a colleague by respectfully discussing and supporting a different perspective.

Discuss, based on our content this week, how these types of diverse comments could subsequently affect many levels of the organizational process, including marketing/branding, hiring future employees, and training and development. (Consider both the positive and the negative effects.)

Prior to completing this activity, read “Self-Assessment and Dialogue as Tools for Appreciating Diversity” and watching the videos What Your Boss Wants: Business (Links to an external site.) and Understanding our Biases and Assumptions (Links to an external site.).

Bias communications occur in social platforms daily. Also, businesses and leaders are continuing to frequent social sites more frequently. The following discussion introduces the potential for the biases that may neglect, or promote, the importance for diversity within organizations, as communicated through social platforms that often promote information through the use of increased emotional triggers and dialogue. Explore the internet for information about the users and frequency of use for social platforms prior to completing the discussion to aid in increased awareness of the effects of social networking communications on healthy diversity practices and the potential for bias.

  • Explore Twitter. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, click here (Links to an external site.).
    • You will need to sign up for an account if you do not have one, but you are not required to interact or share personal information.
  • Search for a popular leader of an organization
    • Examples:
    • Choose a recent tweet and read the comments on the thread. (Note that you are not required to have a twitter account to search.) Take a snapshot of the thread to also include in your discussion (smartphone, “screenshot”, or “snipping tool” are all options for this function.) (**Does not have to include all the comments in the thread.)
    • Analyze and discuss how diversity (e.g. cultural, political, gender, ethnicity, or economic) can be seen by the differing posts presented on the social thread. Include your thoughts about the potential for bias based on the thread you choose.
    • Discuss, based on our content this week, how these types of diverse comments could subsequently affect many levels of the organizational process, including marketing/branding, hiring future employees, and training and development. (Consider both the positive and the negative effects.)
    • What strategies could you personally apply in social networking sites to prevent self-bias and stereotyping of others, based on a better understanding of diversity in an organization?

Your initial post should be between 300 and 350 words. You must use at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed source that was published within the past five years. Cite all information from your sources according to APA guidelines as outlined in the In-Text Citation Helper: A Guide to Making APA In-Text Citations (Links to an external site.). List each of your sources at the end of your post according to APA style as shown in the sample page for References (Links to an external site.).

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Respond substantively to at least two of your peers.

  • What type of leader did your peer(s) choose?
  • Are the suggestions to decrease potential self-bias in social-networking seem plausible?
  • Share your suggestions for preventing self-bias.
  • Were your thoughts about the effects in the workplace similar or different than your peer(s)?
  • Continue to monitor this discussion board through 5 PM (Mountain Time) on Day 7 of the week.
  • Be sure to also respond to your instructor’s comments to you in this forum by Day 7 (when applicable).

Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.
