Cultural Differences in Caring for Infants

The major assumptions of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development are that infants are active agents in constructing knowledge and that the interaction of experience and biology leads to growth and development. The cultural-contextual view agrees with these assumptions but adds two more: (1) other people make active contributions to infant development, and (2) cultural practices, which reflect the dominant beliefs and values of a culture, shape infant interaction with others and, ultimately, shape cognitive development. Variations in sleeping and feeding behaviors reflect the role of infants in a culture. Beliefs about babies in different cultures determine how they are treated, who interacts with them, and, consequently, how babies experience their world.

There have been many recent developments and emerging trends in personnel psychology in the past few years. Organizations conduct business virtually and rely on leveraging telecommunications and the Internet to secure employees in geographically dispersed places. One example of how technology has influenced personnel psychology trends is tied to the advent of Internet-based technology, including the online conduct of human resource functions such as recruitment, background checks, testing, and training. Consider how you would use the Internet for recruitment and submission of job applications or social networking in personnel screening and selection. How much should these types of technology be used in human resource management, and how much weight should they be given in employment decisions? Although technology is one emerging trend in personnel psychology, there are many trends, including some controversial theories.

Regarding social responsibility in human resource management, organizations today strive for corporate socially responsibility (CSR). The leaders of such organizations want to exhibit behaviors that not only achieve organizational objectives but also benefit society. Employees take pride in working for socially responsible organizations. In a 2012 survey, half of those surveyed responded that they would be willing to take a pay cut if the organization made a social or environmental impact. Organizations now realize that they must focus on people, the planet, and profits to recruit and retain employees (Jeanne Meister, June 7, 2012).

For this Discussion, identify one current personnel psychology trend described in the Learning Resources and current literature. Then, consider its relevance within professional practice. Additionally, consider the social influences of personnel selection. Then, think about the recommendations you might give a client organization to promote corporate social responsibility within its human resources department.

Post by Day 4 descriptions of the current personnel psychology trend you identified and why it is important to personnel psychology practice. Then, explain why the identified trend is important to consider in your professional practice. Additionally, explain the social impact of effective personnel selection. Then, provide one strategy that you might suggest to clients to promote socially responsible personnel policies and practices. Provide concrete examples and citations from the Learning Resources and current literature to support your post.

Describe how the data collection process aligns with the context for each of the two selected methodological approaches.

This is the third of the four assignments that will help you prepare for writing qualitative research proposals. For this assignment, you will write a paper that identifies a data analysis strategy and process for each of the two selected methodological approaches you analyzed in the Week 3 discussion. The data analysis strategy and process you identify need to align with the methodological approach. In this paper, you will explain why the data analysis needs to align with the methodological approach, and why both the data collection process and the methodological approach need to align with the research question. You will use the same subject, research topic, research theory, and data collection plan in the all assignments in this course.

Instructions

Write a paper that reflects a data analysis strategy and process that aligns with a given methodological approach. Use the Week 8 Assignment Template [DOCX] to structure your paper.

  • Describe the process of data analysis for the first selected methodological approach for conducting qualitative research (1–2 paragraphs).
  • Describe the process of data analysis for the second selected methodological approach for conducting qualitative research (1–2 paragraphs).
  • Support your assignment with appropriate academic sources and include both citations and references in current APA format. Use 3–5 scholarly resources published with the past three years by recognized academic sources.

Requirements

Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Length of paper: Meets the structure provided in the assignment instructions.
  • Resources: 3–5 scholarly resources. Include a reference page at the end of the paper.
  • APA guidelines: Double-spaced paragraph formatting in the body of the paper. When appropriate, use APA-formatted headings. Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and format. See Evidence and APA for more information on APA style and format.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

=========from week 3

The two Qualitative Approaches I chose were Ethnography and Phenomenologists research methods. Ethnography research is a form of research that focuses on examining the patterns of beliefs, behaviors, and language of a culture or society as a whole. The data is best studied by using a combination of personal involvement within the group and in-depth interaction with the group of people the researcher is studying (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This would be great in studying how America as a culture respond to 9/11. It would study how the culture affected the people and the response to the tragedy.

Phenomenologists research on the other hand focus on describing what all participants have in common as the experience a phenomenon. The example cited on page 97 is that “grief is universally experienced” (Creswell, 2015). The best way to study this is to personally find out how people interact in each situation. Observation and questionnaires would be best in this situation. An example of how this would be used would be how a person’s grief from 9/11 affected the culture around them.

In terms of similarity and differences, Ethnography is the study of people and cultures they live in, while Phenomenology is the study of subjective, lived experiences and perspectives of the people within the said culture. The vast similarity between the two of them is they look to see how people and cultures fit together.  The main difference between Ethnography and Phenomenology is that ethnography focuses on the collective experiences within a certain culture whereas phenomenology focuses on the individual experiences. So, while they are both studying how people fit in a culture and society, Ethnography looks at how the society come together and work together while Phenomenology focuses on how people fit into a societal group. So, while they are both studying the same thing one uses an outside in approach and the other uses an inside out approach.

In your Based on the Bernice Case Study, identify the most relevant psychological disorder associated with her symptoms and explain your rationale.own words, explain what you have learned from the assigned readings about the psychological disorder you identified for the Bernice Case Study.

Case Study (Worth 30 Points)

Please select and complete either Option A or Option B.

Option A

Step 1: Carefully read the following brief case study.

Bernice was hesitant during her initial counseling session because she feared what the therapist would think of her.  The therapist focused on building a therapeutic alliance with Bernice by engaging in empathic, nonjudgmental listening. Soon, Bernice shared that she feared contamination. She was particularly upset by touching wood, mail, and canned goods. She also disliked touching silver flecks. By silver flecks, Bernice meant silver embossing on greeting cards, eyeglass frames, shiny appliances, and silverware. She was unable to state why these particular objects were special sources of possible contamination.  Bernice became more distressed during the session, and she started sharing what made her come for counseling.  Bernice shared that disturbing images pop in her mind, and the images are mind’s eye pictures of her “worst fear.” The images are so disturbing to Bernice that she showed marked distress when talking about them.  She explained that the images were in regards to her child, “The person I love most in the world and would do anything to protect.”

Bernice explained that she feels compelled to do specific behaviors to try to reduce her distress. Bernice engages in a variety of rituals that, when taken together, take up much of her day. In the morning, she spends hours washing and rewashing. Between each bath she has to scrape away the outer layer of her bar of soap so that it will be free of germs. Bernice said that although the decontamination rituals are tiresome, the rituals she does to protect her child from harm are so detailed that Bernice has to repeat them several times to get them “right.”  She said that she feels a sense of urgency to do the rituals perfectly to protect her child.

Step 2:

(Hint: Bernice does *not* have a specific phobia; she does not have “fear of germs.”)

Step 3: In your Based on the Bernice Case Study, identify the most relevant psychological disorder associated with her symptoms and explain your rationale.own words, explain what you have learned from the assigned readings about the psychological disorder you identified for the Bernice Case Study.

Step 4:  You will need to select at least *one* academic journal article that explains one treatment approach used for the psychological disorder you identified for the Bernice Case Study.  To conduct your research on the treatment approach, please use one of the following methods:

  • You can search the following:   Monitor on Psychology (webpage, opens in a new tab). In the search box, type the disorder you identified.  Then, you can locate an article about a treatment approach.
  • You can also search the PsychArticles Database, which you can access using the following steps.  First click on:  SPC’s LibraryOnline (webpage, opens in a new tab).  Then, click “Search Online.”  Next, click “Databases by Subject.”  Next to “Social Sciences,” click PsychArticles.  In the search box, type the disorder you identified. Then, you can locate an article about a treatment approach.
  • You can also search Google Scholar (webpage, opens in a new tab).  Google Scholar only provides an abstract, which is a summary.  After you locate an abstract on Google Scholar, you will need to locate the full article on SPC’s LibraryOnline (webpage, opens in a new tab).

In your own words, summarize the treatment approach you identified from the research you conducted.  Please avoid quoting the academic journal; instead, describe the treatment approach with depth and in your own words.Use APA style for in-text and reference page citations.
