1a: Describe the symptoms of 2 sleep disorders discussed in our course textbook, their possible causes and treatments.

1b: Identify the physical and psychological characteristics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. What makes these disorders difficult for patients to recover from and challenging for clinicians to treat?

Answer both of the questions below.

2a. Recall LeVay’s study of brain anatomy in heterosexual and homosexual men discussed in our course textbook. Some critics of the study have suggested that one or more of the men classified as “heterosexual” might actually have been homosexual or bisexual. If such were the case, would that fact strengthen or weaken the study’s overall conclusions? Why?

2b. What changes in ability to empathize with others would you expect to see in someone with damage to the amygdala? Answer this question by first describing what empathy is and what is required to be able to empathize with others and what the normally functioning amygdala’s function is, and then discussing what characteristics a person with a damaged amygdala would have.

Answer both of the questions below.

3a: Describe the role of the human amygdala in emotions and the role of serotonin synapses in aggressive behavior.

3b: ADHD is diagnosed far more frequently in the U.S. today than in the past, and far more often in the U.S. than in Europe. Suggest at least two possibilities for why this is the case and indicate whether it is testable and what methods researchers would use to test each of the hypotheses you proposed in answering this question.

Why do people use drugs? Why is it difficult to treat drug abuse? How effective is treatment? What role might a psychologist take in a drug treatment program? Be sure to include examples from the reading. Why do people use drugs?

(Be sure to read chapter 5, module 16 to help you answer this!)Why is it difficult to treat drug abuse? For this element, you could reference specific drug/s and explain what the chemical addiction is and then discuss why treating that addiction may be difficult.

Discussion 2 (answer to this 250 words)

Every Monday morning, a friend would bring Lauren her favorite latte and a doughnut from a coffee shop by her house. And every Monday morning, her stomach would growl right before her friend rang the doorbell and handed her the weekly treat. She noticed a month later that her stomach growled each time the doorbell rang in the morning even if it was not Monday.

Given what you have learned about learning processes, which type of learning has Lauren experienced? What do you think is the best way to get her to “unlearn” her behavior? What implications does this understanding of the learning process have on our ability to make changes in our lifestyle? Support your reasoning with information from the text and other course materials.

Learning is a behavior acquired through experience (Feldman, p. 168). Lauren has experienced the classical

conditioning process. Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a neutral stimulus prompts a response after

being paired with a stimulus that naturally brings about that response (Feldman, p. 169). Classical conditioning has a

process (Feldman, p. 169): Neutral stimulus (unnatural response), Unconditioned Stimulus (natural response),

Unconditioned response (occur naturally without training or learning), conditioned stimulus (neutral stimulus paired

with conditional response), and conditioned response (response that occur in response to conditional stimulus). In

Lauren’s case, before conditioning: the doorbell ringing every Monday morning is the neutral stimulus, the doughnut

and coffee would cause the unconditioned response; stomach growling. During conditioning, Lauren’s stomach growls

before the doorbell rings and a hand off of the treats (neutral stimulus paired with unconditional stimulus). After

conditioning, anytime Lauren hears the doorbell (conditional stimulus ) her stomach growls (conditional response).

Lauren could unlearn the behavior by extinction. Understanding classical conditioning allows one to understand how

unwanted habits are formed. To produce extinction you must disassociate the conditioned stimuli from the

unconditioned stimuli (Feldman, p. 172). In Lauren’s case she could have all of the guess to ring the doorbell upon

arrival.
