can you write a rhetorical analysis over the documentary quot blackfish quot

Paper 1: A Rhetorical Analysis

Introduction:

During our first few weeks of the semester we have begun to study rhetorical strategies to explore how argument are crafted and presented to viewers. We have paid special attention to the way research is conducted and why it is necessary to incorporate research to build one’s credibility. These discussions are structured to help students understand why we research.

Our first essay is going to be a short work that will present students an opportunity revisit our discussions of rhetoric to analyze the use of effective rhetorical strategies and to respond analytically to a well-received and controversial film.

When drafting the essay: Students should work to HOOK the readers and then smoothly introduce the subject of the essay, namely the film. Students must include BOTH the title of the film, Blackfish, they are responding to (and the title will go in italics) and the full name of the director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, in the introduction. Students should frame the thesis around the director’s use of the appeals and why she uses them. In the body paragraphs, students should first summarize the main argument of the film and then should pointedly address logos, ethos, and pathos and provide examples from the film to discuss how and why the director employs these different appeals. Consider how effective those particular appeals were and why the director chose them as supports for his or her argument.

To support their analysis and begin to work to synthesize the work of others in their writing, students will be required to find one film review on Blackfish and use at least two of the three required articles on Blackfish that are assigned reading and located in the class Blackboard site.

Requirements:

  • All essays should be at least 875 words in length, excluding the Works Cited page. Well-developed essays may exceed the length, but all essays should meet the minimum requirement.
  • All essays should be in standard MLA manuscript form, including size 12.0 Times New Roman font, double-spaced text, and standard 1 inch margins. All essays will have a header with the student’s last name and page number in the top right hand corner of every page ½ inch from the margin.
  • All essays should have at least four (4) properly documented in-text citations from the film chosen to demonstrate both a beginning comprehension of the mechanics of in-text citations as well as the ability to choose appropriate textual proof to support written claims. Please remember that this is merely the minimum requirement; students can certainly use more textual proof if they need to.
  • All essays should have at least three (3) properly documented in-text citations from the Blackfish articles provided and the required film review students will find to further demonstrate both a beginning comprehension of the mechanics of in-text citations as well as the ability to choose appropriate textual proof to support written claims. Please remember that this is merely the minimum requirement; students can certainly use more textual proof if they need to.
  • There will be at bare minimum a total of seven (7) quotations in the essay.
  • Students must draft and include an MLA 8 standard Works Cited page with an entry for the film, the film review, and the articles. Please include the url addresses for the online materials.
  • All essays should have a creative and original title that the student writer creates, not simply the title of the film or Paper 1!

Evaluation:

All papers will be evaluated on both content and mechanics. I will be looking at the quality and depth of your analysis, specifically students’ discussion of different types of rhetorical appeals and presentation of relevant examples. Also, I will be carefully evaluating you on the choice of textual evidence and the format of the in-text citations. Finally, I will be looking closely at the writing style and language and the mechanics of Standard English and MLA documentation that we must master in academic writing.
