Cash Budgets

A cash budget helps an organization plan and control the movement of cash into and out of the company. It is important for an organization to have a good understanding of its cash needs in order to identify instances of cash idleness or shortage. Cash on hand allows the organization to make commitments to various stakeholders, including employees and suppliers. Idle cash represents missed opportunities to reinvest into the organization and to return value to shareholders.

In this Application, you will use the information on cash budgets outlined in the Resources to prepare a cash budget for Gladiator Robotics given the data provided in the scenario below.

You will create and use an Excel spreadsheet for your calculations for the problems below, and the spreadsheet you develop is what you submit for the Application. Note: The Resources section includes tutorials for those who might need help in designing and using an Excel spreadsheet.

The board of directors of Gladiator Robotics is considering whether or not to donate to a national robotics convention for high school students interested in technology and engineering. The company needs you to prepare a monthly cash budget to determine the available cash reserves for January, February, and March. Relevant data appear below.

All sales are on account. Collections are expected to be 60% in the month following the sale, 25% in the second month following the sale, and 10% in the third month following the sale. Five percent are deemed to be uncollectible.

The company sold equipment in February for $20,000 and received a dividend on investments of $4,000 in March.

Cash on hand as of January 1st is $14,000.

The company wants to maintain a cash balance at the end of each month of at least $10,000. It has a $250,000 line of credit at the bank and will borrow from the bank in order to maintain this balance.

Part I: Prepare a monthly cash budget for January, February, and March following the template on page 307 in the textbook.

Part II: Analyze the cash budget and make recommendations to the board of directors of Gladiator Robotics regarding your findings. Be specific regarding possible causes and remedies (if applicable).

Part III: What if any concerns do you have about the ability to make the donation? Also, do you have any concerns about cash on hand which might impact variable HR expenses such as recruitment costs or other commitments to employees including staffing, development or rewards? Be specific.

Go beyond holding them accountable with actual metrics and expectations, but also making sure that they’re educated, making sure they have the tools, the ongoing support needed.  For example, if they do take a risk and hire someone that may not have the background that they’ve been looking for, perhaps, and they’re taking a chance, support them.  Make sure they realize they’re not alone in that.  Nor is that person that they hired, but nor is the leader who took that risk.

And if it doesn’t work out, celebrate and say it was still worth that work, and try.  If it does work out, celebrate that because look how it worked out.  And the domino effect of that becomes contagious because everyone eventually does want to be on the side of what’s working and a success.

So always hold the leaders accountable, and make sure that they’re equipped and trained.  But at the same time, don’t rely on leaders alone to actually move the organization forward.  Because in some ways it is a very unreliable group, because they have many conflicting interests.  So the philosophy is hold the leaders accountable, make sure that they’re trained and equipped, but at the same time, do things on an organization level.  Have the programs that’s moving the talent.  Start doing little things like really taking a look at job descriptions and see if it’s too long and too complicated, and actually excludes many people.  As opposed to a lot of leaders think the longer the job descriptions are, the better candidates they’ll get.  In reality, they just get fewer candidates.

Little things like employee resource groups, like the different programs that we have that allows associates to be more empowered with their career.  You have to also do things on an organizational level.  All our recruiters, for example, have been trained on diverse recruiting, and has been trained on cultural competence, and coached individually on cultural competence.  So they’re going to recruit for a diverse pool of candidates whether the leaders ask for it or not.  So always hold the leaders accountable, make sure there’s something happening on an organizational level. 

The third philosophy that we have is, the best way I could describe it is I do believe, historically, diversity and inclusion has focused too much on changing the minds of people—trying to convince the nonbelievers.  Our philosophy is “empower the believers, they’ll push out the nonbelievers.”  And that’s what all the programs, and the communication we do, is really around that.  Because frankly, I could train someone all day.  I would never really know if they’re “converted.”  Really, you have to sort of empower, and give permission, and give platforms to the believers, and they will drown out the nonbelievers. 

 

 

In the Module 2 Case, we will examine ways in which the external environment affects the choice of strategy (creation of threats and opportunities), and how the external environment affects an organization’s chosen strategic direction, specifically through the lens of a diversity and inclusion issue.

 

Case Assignment

 

Conduct research on an organization that has struggled with a specific diversity and inclusion issue over the past year or so. Once you have selected the organization, apply a SLEPT analysis to critically assess the external environment of the organization. Determine the extent to which the company’s strategies should be adjusted based on the opportunities and threats you observed in the external environment, and explore ways to mitigate similar problems in the future.

Pay specific attention to the diversity and inclusion issue that has caused the organization to struggle and offer concrete solutions based on the SLEPT analysis to help move the organization forward.

 

Keys to the Assignment

 

In a 4- to 6-page paper, do the following:

  • Describe the specific diversity and inclusion issue faced by your chosen organization.
  • Describe the strategy (or strategies) followed by the organization.
  • Use a SLEPT analysis to assess the external environment of the chosen organization to highlight and articulate the major opportunities and threats faced by the organization through the lens of the diversity and inclusion issue.
  • What specific choices were made in handling the diversity and inclusion issue that should have been handled differently? Why should an alternative strategy have been used? What would the outcome have been had this strategy been adopted instead?
  • What changes in procedures can the organization make moving forward to prevent the same issue from occurring or from causing the same level of damage?
  • Support your work with credible sources.

These issues stem from a lack of medical care, poor education, unhealthy living conditions, and lack of resources in any area that leads to social inadequacy. Advocacy requires persuasion and must be presented from a factual and well thought out process that explains what the need is and how it can be addressed.
Lobbying is defined as a person or people who work to influence change in government policies and or legislation by addressing members of the government (Herzberg, 2015). Lobbying is a form of advocacy and also requires persuasion that is informative and uses the appropriate language, research, and approach to be effective enough to create change. As a human service representative, it is imperative to have the appropriate knowledge of local, state, and federal laws to make a strong case and to advocate for change (Herzberg, 2015). Knowing when to stand up for laws or legislation that contradict with clientâ€s rights or ethical standards that the human service field is representative of is an essential start to lobbying against these contradictions.
One issue that needs to be addressed in my community is the advocacy for women who have suffered from abuse in the form of domestic violence and sexual abuse. There is a need to serve this underrepresented group and to create an opportunity to rebuild the lives of women who have suffered from abuse. Some of the things that should be presented to the community in regard to this issue are the statistics for the number of women suffering from the aftermath of abuse as well as the number of children that are also affected.This issue should also be backed up by groups that are willing to participate in funding and other resources to help aid with this issue.
The role of human service professionals is to work with organizations or non-profit agencies to advocate for issues that are affecting the communities they serve. In a lobbyist situation, human service professionals will be motivated to human cause to the attention of legislators at different government levels (Herzberg, 2015).In order to advocate for issues that are affecting communities, human service professionals will form groups, and provide persuasive arguments for change in community projects, laws, and other client services to address a need. “You can speak for your clients when they canâ€t speak for themselves (Human Services Council, 2011).”
