Analyzing Dietary/Nutritional Claims

Find an article that makes a dietary or nutritional claim. (e.g. “lose weight while you sleep with ‘x’ diet pill”, “gain muscle mass fast and easy
with ‘x’ supplement”, “follow this diet plan to detox your body”, “add ‘x’ super vitamin to your diet to prevent illness”). The article can be from an
online magazine, online newspaper or online advertisement. The article is to be from the popular press (directed at consumers) not the scientific
literature.
A copy of the online article must be submitted with your assignment (include a screen shot of the article, a picture of the article or
copy and paste the article into a Microsoft Word document. A weblink to the article does not count) [1 mark].
Write a critique (in point form) about this article. Include the following information:
a. Identify the topic (this is not always the title of the article) of your article and where it was published (i.e. where you found the article).
[2 marks].
b. Describe the dietary or nutritional claim made in your article [2 marks].
c. Discuss whether or not this article has the characteristics of valid nutrition information or whether it has the characteristics of nutrition
quackery with direct links to your course readings and specific examples from your article [6 marks – 1 mark per characteristic].
(e.g. The claim is “too good to be true”: the article promises weight loss while you sleep).
Consult your course notes for Unit 1 and the corresponding chapter in your textbook, specifically:
 Consumer Corner: Reading Nutrition News with an Educated Eye
 Controversy Unit 1: Sorting the Imposters from the Real Nutrition Experts

Management Psychology

This is part two of a two part submission. In this submission, students should carry out the experiment designed in the part one proposal. This submission should be mostly practical – i.e., actually performing the experiment. The submission should consist of a) a brief description of the methods, and any changes made between the proposal and the carrying out of the experiment, b) a detailed summary of the results found (with supporting evidence – i.e. prove that you have actually done the experiment), and c) a discussion of the results (so what does the experiment tell us – does it support the theory or go against it? How can you use the findings in your future management practice?) The experiment in part 1: Assessing the Psychology Governing the Dominant Motivational Factor in Students. The experiment write up can be structured as follows: Introduction (100 words) Sets the scene for the assignment Methods (300 words) Briefly summarises the methods, any changes made and why, as well as justifying the experiment (essentially a short recap of the literature in the proposal) Results (500-700 words) Describes in detail the results of the experiment. This section must provide extensive evidence of the process of conducting the experiment, and the findings. Discussion (500-700 words) Discusses the significance of the findings in relation to existing literature, what you would do differently if you did the experiment again, how these findings can be used in management practice; critical appraisal of results Conclusion (100 words) Summarises the key findings of the paper
