Any topic (writer’s choice)

Read the section in Chapter 2: Indigenous Heritage from Mexico and the Arrival of the Spanish.

Many Mexican-American artists (and other Latinx artists) use either Pre-Columbian (Mesoamerican) or Spanish Colonial subjects (such as art, architecture, gods and goddesses, even famous people, such as the conquistador, Hernn Corts) in contemporary artworks, like a kind of “cultural vocabulary.”

Find an example of iconography – symbolism or subject matter – from either pre-contact or Spanish Colonial Mexico. What is the history behind this subject? Where does it come from and what might its meaning be?

Can you post contemporary or recent examples of art using your symbol or subject?

Feel free also to post and discuss any topic introduced in the reading as iconography. Some ideas:

Aztln, Hernn Corts, Coatlicue, Pre-Columbian pyramids, art of the Olmec, Maya, Aztec. OR feel free to add another related subject not mentioned in the reading.****Please remember to list the sources you use.

Any topic (writer’s choice)

As we go through life we are carrying on a constant dialog in our head much like the stock ticker tape running across Wall Street. Many of these thoughts unconsciously just pop into our heads. Cognitive Theorist, Aaron Beck, refers to these as automatic thoughts. They can distort our thinking because of their unique characteristics:

Spontaneous: they appear to just pop into your head
Shorthand: the thoughts are composed of few words and/or a brief visual.
Unconditionally accepted: no matter how irrational, they are almost always believed. Because they appear rapidly they dont get analyzed for validity.
Language: automatic thoughts are veiled in distorted terms such as should, must, and ought.
Hard to turn off: they are reflexive and seem plausible, come and go with a will of their own and tend to feed off each other
Learned: they have been reinforced since childhood, but can also be unlearned.
It is this unique nature of auto-thoughts that often makes it hard for us to be sensitive to the feelings of others. We have already discussed the idea that we really don’t know people. When we consider that their thoughts, like ours, are streaming in and out of their head(s), it is no wonder we are sometimes amazed at the reactions of others. And, sometimes it is a “wonder” that there can be agreement over important matters.

Wellcast – Automatic Thoughts

Your Practical Application Work for this week involves checking your auto-thoughts. At the first moment of tension, after reading this, check your auto thoughts:

Describe the moment or situation.
Describe your thoughts about it (those which cause tension/stress).
Write a to 1 page typed written response and allow your self to replace the negative, irrational thoughts with a healthier response.

Professional

weeks assignment, assume that you are an educational psychologist hired to provide professional development to teachers at a public, K-12 institution. The focus of the Professional Development (PD) is to enhance the education of gifted students in regular classes. One thing youre likely to notice is that, unlike Termans research that began in 1920, gifted students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Although diversity and socioeconomic status (SES) will be discussed more in later assignments, you will begin to notice and consider how issues of race, culture, and SES may play a role in the identification and instruction of gifted students. Your approach is to present advice and guidance concerning how a teacher might differentiate the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for a gifted student and how that should translate to the classroom, describing how the instruction should be differentiated to best educate each gifted student. For each scenario, create your advice for the IEP and Classroom translation that you will share and discuss with your PD audience. Using an outline or bulleted format, write a scenario that recommends strategies and the reasoning for each strategy to educate a gifted child.

For instance, one strategy and reason could be the following:

Strategy #1: Allow Marcus to come into your room during your Prep period.
Reason #1: Marcus seems drawn to your chemistry class and appears discouraged by wasted time when other students ask, the same thing over and over. By providing Marcus access to your lab and your one-on-one time, Marcus will be allowed to think, discover, and ask questions beyond the limitations of the regular classroom.

Now, its your turn! Provide at least three strategies and your reasoning/rationale for each choice based on your EdPsych expertise:

In Scenario 1, the gifted student is a Black female, aged 14 named Rose. Rose has shown special interest in math and science. Shes taking Trigonometry and Chemistry but reads at grade level. Shes been diagnosed with dyslexia and hyperactivity. She has been frustrating her teachers by answering almost every question before others have the chance to raise their hands. She often doesnt get the right answer, but when the teacher rejects her answer, she explains the complex rationale she used to provide the answer, all of which is based on factual bases in the course.

In Scenario 2, the gifted student is Carlos, an 8-year-old, Latino male. Carlos is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Farsi, which he learned on his own after becoming good friends with a 10-year-old Indian-American named ViJay.  He commonly finishes his grade-level reading assignments very quickly, but often will be found reading an advanced classic text in Spanish or French in the remaining class time. He is quiet and introverted. At lunchtime, he can often be found playing an intense chess match with Vijay, speaking in Farsi. His teachers worry about him not fitting in.

Length: Include a minimum of 400 words per scenario.

References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources.

Your scenarios should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards.
