soc film analysis paper

INSTRUCTIONS:

Summary

Begin with a summary of the film. What is the name of the film? What is the film about? Your summary should not exceed ½ to ¾ of the first page (i.e., less than one page). The film you choose MUST come from the list on page 2.

Sociological Significance of Film

This section will make up the bulk of your paper. Here, you will apply at least three concepts to the film. In doing so, explain what each concept means and how you see the concept relating to a specific scene in the film, or the film in general. Make sure you are including enough detail to make your point. For example, if you are making a more general connection between a concept and the film as a whole, make sure you bring in evidence from the film (e.g., a scene) to make your point. Part of your grade for this section will be the appropriateness and sophistication of the connection you make. If you are having a really hard time making the connection, you have likely chosen a concept that is not particularly useful for explaining the scene/film. Similarly, you should not be making simplistic connections. For example “the character of Regina George is wealthy. This relates to the concept of “upper class” because Regina George is from the upper class.” Now, with that said, you could make this into a more sophisticated connection be considering how Regina George’s behaviors, (etc) reflect dominant beliefs among people from a certain social class.

Conclusion

You should end with a conclusion that ties everything together. More specifically, (1) what does the film suggest about specific substantive areas we covered over the course of the semester (i.e., deviance, class, race, gender, sexuality, family, media, and health)? It may be that the film connects to multiple substantive areas. If this is the case, you should say so and also explain why. (2) Does the films depiction of this substantive area appear to be accurate based on what we read about it? For example, does the film convey an accurate depiction of race relations in the contemporary United States or the historical period it was set? Why or why not? This section should be no more than 1 page.

General Information

You MUST explicitly bring in course material to support the connections you are making. You will do this through the use of citations.

For example, “this scene relates to the concept of ‘ethnocentrism,’ which is the idea that people tend to view other cultures through the lens of the culture they belong (Ferris and Stein, 2014: 78). Ultimately, ethnocentrism can create bias, which is what was happening with the protagonist when he….”

You may also draw from the supplemental articles we read. Cite these articles by including the author, year of publication, and page number.

Your paper should be approximately 3-5 double-spaced pages in length (12 point font).

You do NOT need a work cited page because all your connections will be to material we read in class.
