Holistic Care in Advanced Practice Nursing

Holistic care refers to approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Consider the following case study:

You are caring for a first-time mother in a health clinic. While assessing the woman, you notice she is becoming visibly upset. When you ask, she notes that her mother, with whom she was very close, died last year and that she really would have loved to have shared this pregnancy with her. You empathize with the patient, as your own mother just died 6 months ago. She also notes that she and her partner have been bickering a lot lately on top of her feeling generally sore, tired, and overwhelmed.

Define holistic care in your own words. Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. In addition, you may consider the intersection of holistic care and caritas principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science

HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES ON DISABILITY

Overview
Recalling the work you completed for the Unit 4 discussion questions, this option asks you to construct your own Bulgarian Disability History Timeline by combining your own original research with the repository of disability history our class has created (Unit 4 Discussion Board).
• Samples of Disability Timelines for reference:
o Disability History Timeline [http://www.ncld-youth.info/Downloads/disability_history_timeline.pdf]
o Eugenics Timeline [http://eugenicsarchive.ca/discover/timeline](part of the Eugenics Archive ) [http://eugenicsarchive.ca/]

Preparation
A. Review the repository of disability history created by our class (Unit 4 Discussion Board) & link it with your own investigation/research.

B. Determine if you would like to construct a Timeline that provides a chronological general overview of a specific period =OR= a Timeline that traces the chronological development of a specific topic. You are welcomed to focus on any area that interests you. If you need a little guidance with ideas, here is a list of possible approaches to take:

• For a General Overview, you may wish to consider chronicling one of these time periods:

o Before 1995 (broad overview)
o 1995-2000 (broad overview)
o 2000-present day (broad overview)
o 2018-present day (specific overview of protests in the capital city of Sofia)

• For a Topic-Specific Overview, you may wish to consider chronicling one of these options:

o Independent Living vs. Institutionalization + Personal Assistance
o Mothers Protests in the capital city of Sofia
o Accessibility Protests
o Arts and Activism
Directions

  1. Create a 3-part Bulgarian Disability History Timeline: (worth 20 points)
    I. Introduce your Timeline topic/focus (general or specific), providing a brief rationale (2-3 sentences) to explain its importance in Bulgarian Disability History. (2 points)

II. Highlight 4 specific historical events. For each event, please include the following information: (8 points: 4 entries x 2 points each)

a. Date & Name of historical event and 2-3 sentence overview. For your overview, discuss the importance of the event as it relates to your Timeline (i.e, Why did you include this specific event?).

NOTE: you may include quotes from our discussion board for the overview (roughly, @ 25%); be sure to provide proper attribution to the original author.

b. Proper citation for sources referenced in your Timeline (title, author, hyperlink/web address, etc.) NOTE: a strong Timeline will include at least 3-4 resources that the viewer can directly link to.

III. Report Portion: In the style of an advocacy letter, write a 300-500 word letter to Thomas Philo ( Archivist), encouraging the Archives Collections to partner in the development of an official Bulgarian Disability History Timeline. (worth 10 points)
