Please follow the instruction seriously. Reading Response 4 on Serial We are now halfway through the podcast Serial, and we have heard many different arguments using a range of rhetorical strategies. Your reading response 4 will focus on rhetorical analysis. As Lunsford, Ruszkiewicz, and Walters argue, to analyze a text rhetorically means to perform “a close reading of a text to find how and whether it persuades” (91). Chapter 3 of our textbook, Understanding Rhetoric, should be particularly helpful. Your goal is to write a response in which you assess the overall argumentative strategies of any one extended argument in Serial. You can choose a line of argument from any of the significant people in the case, such as Adnan or lay or Aisha or their friends or the police detectives or even the streaker from Leakin Park. Consider the following factors: 1) the use (or lack) of logical reasoning and adequate evidence in support of the main claims, 2) the rhetor’s (a rhetor is anyone who uses oral and / or written rhetoric) presentation of (or failure to present) themselves as credible and fair-minded as seen through the their tone and style and through a willingness to consider alternative points of view, and 3) the argument’s invocation (or failure to invoke) the audience’s emotions and values. * Again, like before, do not organize your response based on the itemized list above. Preparing the paper

As the nurse executive of a healthcare organization, it was reported to you that one of your nurses may be chemically impaired (legal/regulatory issue) and has allegedly been taking drugs from the unit. This nurse also had two recent medication errors in the past week. Discuss the steps you would take to validate this allegation and how you would proceed after the allegation was confirmed to be true.

  1. Clearly introduce your legal/regulatory issue in the introduction paragraph; including a sentence that states the purpose of your paper.
  2. Clearly articulate the steps you would take as the nurse leader to investigate the allegation of this legal/regulatory issue as stated above and how to proceed when the allegation is confirmed to be true.
  3. Investigate/research and discuss if your state board of nursing offers some type of recovery program for chemically-impaired nurses (a strategy). If they do not offer a program in your state, discuss a proposed recovery program for chemically-impaired nurses that you would like to have implemented for your state.

Contact a state representative who may have an interest in this topic area and share their comments on this issue in an addendum (not included as part of the three page limit). Include your correspondence eg. Emails in your addendum, as well. This will demonstrate you contacted a state representative, in the event you do not receive a response.

4. Clearly articulate your specific strategies to improve costs and improve the quality of healthcare at your organization related to the legal/regulatory issue stated above. How do your strategies relate to the Person-Centred Nursing Leadership Framework by McCormack and McCance (2017); specifically the contextual domain?

5. Include of a minimum of three sources of scholarly, empirical evidence that supports your strategies to improve costs and quality of healthcare.

Cultural Differences as Barriers to Success

Please ONLY use 3 or more internet sources (NOT JOURNALS) as references for this briefing. The paper needs to be formatted as follows:

Introduction

Analysis

Summary

References

The Merger & Acquisition team hired a team of external consultants to assist with identification of cultural issues which could result in barriers to the successful acquisition of Island Banking Services by Padgett-Beale. The consultants conducted interviews with Padgett-Beale executives and senior staff. They also used a standardized survey to measure attitudes and beliefs about culture and conflict management styles at Padgett-Beale. A survey of islanders was conducted as well. The results from both surveys have not yet been validated but, the early results show substantial similarities to existing national culture survey results for U.S. populations and residents of Fiji. You can learn more about the national culture surveys here: https://www.hofstede-insights.com/models/national-culture/ and here https://www.hofstede-insights.com/country-comparison/fiji,the-usa/

An additional survey was conducted among Padgett-Beale managers who will transfer to PBI-FS and island residents who have applied for jobs at PBI-FS. This survey focused primarily on the influence of context upon inter-cultural communications. This survey found that Padgett-Beale’s corporate communications culture was “low context” while the job applicants expected a “high context” culture. For definitions and examples see http://www.culture-at-work.com/highlow.html

After reviewing the consultants’ reports, the M&A team has decided to focus on differences in two factors which could present immediate barriers to success: (a) communications context and (b) power-distance.

Cultural Dimension    Padgett Beale Managers & Employees    PBI-FS Job Applicants (Islanders)
Communications Context    Low Context    High Context
Power-Distance    Medium Power Distance    High Power Distance
To answer questions and allay concerns, you’ve been asked to prepare a briefing about these factors to be given at the next senior leadership meeting. For that briefing you must research and answer the following questions:

1. What is “communications context” and how could it influence expectations of managers and employees and their relationships with each other at PBI-FS?

2. What is “power-distance” and how could it influence expectations of managers and employees and their relationships with each other at PBI-FS?

3. How might differences in communications context (low/high) and power-distance contribute to conflicts within the new organization (PBI-FS), e.g. between transferred PBI personnel and newly hired islanders?

4. What best practices should managers and executives follow when conflicts arise between the company (Padgett-Beale) and its new subsidiary (PBI-FS)?

Organize your talking points around the four sets of questions. Then write your responses as a 7 paragraph briefing paper (you may use some bullet points but the majority of the content should be organized as paragraphs). This paper will be sent to the VP’s and other senior leaders to read prior to the senior leadership meeting.
