 Communicating Messages

In the field of human services, it’s not uncommon to work with clients who are encountering a range of challenges that arouse feelings of sadness, anger, and frustration. Would you know how to engage appropriately with a client under such conditions? In this second discussion, you will identify and reflect on various elements related to conveying effective messages to clients.

Read Chapters 7 and Chapter 8 of The Interpersonal Communication Book and review the following five human service career paths from the Human Service Careers (Links to an external site.) video:

Initial Post: Imagine that you are a human service professional working in a career path that is different from the one you selected in the first discussion forum and prepare a reply that sufficiently addresses each of the items below,. Don’t forget that it is critical to cite your sources of information, including the textbook, using APA formatting.

  • What are some ways in which effective means of emotional expression is used to engage with a client experiencing a problem (e.g., loss of job, homelessness, health concerns, etc.)?

Your entire group has decided to try to settle in Painted Canyon, in spite of the challenges as far as the lack of infrastructure (roads, etc.) and questions about natural resources, such as water. To sustain your group, you will need the following components in your settlement: 1. One or more sources of electrical energy; 2. A source of hydrocarbons, such as coal or oil shale, to make plastics of various types. These can also serve as energy resources, but are not renewable (i.e., there is only so much and once it is all mined, it is gone forever); 3. Some natural resources, such as stone for building, sand and gravel for building materials, and limestone for cement 4. A place to build your small village; this only has to be big enough for 30 or so people 5. A place for a small farm to grow enough food for 30 people; 6. Water for drinking and for watering any crops you grow; 7. Access to some cool recreation spots, such as the upper, shady parts of the canyon, and 8. Other things that are important but not listed here (think about what else you might need). You may also want to consider and address any foreseeable environmental issues that may arise from building your settlement. Other Factors to Consider . Think about what other factors you need to consider before deciding where to build your settlement. You cannot just put your settlement anywhere. For example, if you build your settlement directly below a cliff, landslides might destroy it. Some careful planning is in order . In Worksheet 9A-1, list all the factors that should influence your decision about where to (1) build your settlement, (2) find a water supply, (3) plant a farm and (4) how your settlement might grow. As part of this process, consider the following observations about the area’s climate The Painted Canyon area has a very dry climate, with nearly constant sunshine and only occasional rainfall, totaling about 9 inches of rainfall a year (slightly more than Phoenix) The only surface water is in a small stream, hidden among the green bushes in the main stream valley. Consider the factors above and choose sites for different parts of your settlement, including the actual living space (settlement), a farm, and source of water. Decide where to build your settlement, grow your crops, and where to look for a source of water. You do not have a lot of information, so some inferences and educated guesses are in order. On the topographic map at the end of this module, write a “C, “F”, and “W” at the proposed sites for your settlement, farm, and source of water, respectively. Decide what material you are going use to build your buildings, and where you are going to get it. On your topographic map on the worksheet, write an M at the proposed site for your building materials. In Worksheet 9B on the worksheet, write a short justification of why you put the settlement, farm, water source, and source of building material where you did.
Your settlement will need one or more sources of energy. The geology and landscape constrain which energy sources are available and the trade-offs associated with each type. Decide what your energy source will be. You could use coal or oil shale, both of which are in the gray and reddish sedimentary sequence, or some other energy resource, like hydroelectric (dams), solar, or wind. Show on your topographic map a location for any facilities you need to generate the energy. You can simply write the letter “E” on the site and explain what type of facility it is on the bottom margin of the map
