Porn a Public Health Crisis?

If claims made by researchers such as psychiatrist Dr. Mary Anne Layden are true, does this constitute “public health crisis” or pandemic?  If so, why?  If not, why?

  – What does “objectification” mean?

  – What does “commodification” mean?

  – for reasons of ethics and public health prostitution currently is illegal in 49 of 50 U.S. States. E.g., those engaging in prostitution allegedly have 20 times the death rate of the average population;  in part due to co-morbid addictions. What’s the legal distinction between prostitution and pornography production?

  – Which ethical traditions seen to date (if any) may find themselves most in tension with the proposition that porn would be a public health crisis?

  – Which ethical traditions seen to date might not conflict with the proposition that porn is a public health crisis?

  – If one or more of the alleged problems listed above were seriously fueled by porn production and/or consumption, would this impact the costs of medical care in the United States?  If yes, why?  If no, why?

ENG 107

Assignment:  Marjane Satrapi grew up in Iran in the 70s and 80s, during the Islamic Revolution.  Malala Yousafzai grew up in Pakistan in the early 2000s.  Ta-Nehisi Coates grew up in Baltimore, coming of age in the late 80s / early 90s, during the crack epidemic.  All three of them had educated parents (or at least one educated parent), all three encountered violence and extremist world views at a young age, yet they are all very different people.  This assignment is asking you to analyze their similarities and differences, as well as to explore the similarities and differences of the social and political circumstances they grew up with, and the role that education played in all three of their lives.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself as you work on this assignment:  Did they grow up with privilege and/or wealth?  All of them are rebellious people, but in what ways are their rebellious natures different?  In what ways are they the same?  What, if any, are the social, political, and religious similarities of their childhoods?  How important was education to their development as people?  Did they embrace education or struggle with it (or both)?  Would they return to their homes if they could, or are they happier living in their current respective cities?  What other important questions can you think of when comparing and contrasting these three significantly different people?

English ( sonny’s blues short story)

“Sonny’s Blues” is a text with a lot to analyze. We’ve spent a lot of time in class, discussing Sonny, his brother and the issues of race, poverty and control (of life and suffering). We have also closely looked at the role of music in both Sonny and his brother’s lives. The following short answer questions will help you write your second essay. Answer each question thoroughly and completely using full sentences. You answers should be typed and in MLA format.

  1. Suffering is a major theme in “Sonny’s Blues”. What internal and external factors contribute to Sonny’s suffering? How does Sonny’s art/music communicate his pain? How does his pain reflect the suffering of his community?

2. Illustrate, using textual evidence, how Baldwin uses the themes of light and darkness

to reflect the struggles of Sonny and his brother.

3. Grace’s death acts as a catalyst for the narrator’s acknowledgement of his pain and the pain around him. How does the narrator’s loss of control in his personal life allow him to understand Sonny as an artist?

4. The end of Sonny’s Blues alludes to a mutual understanding and acceptance between brothers. What textual evidence and Biblical symbolism shows the narrator has forgiven Sonny.
