Week #5: Cardiovascular Syste

Randi Marchant, a 42-year-old waitress, was vacuuming the family room when she felt a painful squeezing in her chest again.  This was the third time today, but this one really hurt.  She sat down to catch her breath and stubbed out the cigarette she had left smoldering in the half-filled ashtray by the couch. Randi’s husband, Jimmy, and stepdaughter Melanie had pestered her until she finally had taken time off work to see her doctor.  

Dr. Harris found that her blood pressure was 158/88-probably owing to the noon rush stress at work, she rationalized.  At least her cholesterol test was only 30 points above average this time.  It had been slowly coming down, even though she cheated on her diet.

Another wave of pain tightened its icy fingers around her heart, and the pain moved up into both sides of her jaw.  Randi thought, “Probably just a little heartburn.  Since the pain doesn’t radiate down my left arm, it couldn’t be my heart, could it?”

“Don’t think about the pain,” she told herself.  “Think of something else.  Melanie’s prom dress needs altering.”  Randi fell to the floor, clutching her chest, just as Melonie walked in.  She saw her stepmother slumped on the floor and screamed, “Oh no!  Help, somebody, help!”

Assuming that Randi is suffering a myocardial infarction, discuss why it is important that she receive appropriate treatment quickly.  What signs and symptoms are consistent with an MI?  What are her treatment options?

You have been exposed to several laws, initiatives and strategies that form a large portion of the maritime transportation security framework within the United States. Looking at the key initiatives such as SMART, SAFE Port, SVSS and others where do you see that the vulnerabilities still exist.

The answer is not meant to be a list of items…it should be a critical analysis in a narrative form – where are the vulnerabilities, what risk do they pose…AND who addresses them. For example, the SAFE Port Act most notably strengthens port security in two key ways, by utilizing radiation and nuclear detection technology. This innovative technology is used to inspect cargo without actually opening up containers to perform visual inspections, therefore creating a safer environment for Customs and port employees.

The Reflection papers can be informal in nature but I should still be able to understand your writing spell check would be a good idea.  The reaction papers are an opportunity for you to participate in the class in addition to contributing to class discussions. I will evaluate the papers on the following criteria:

The degree to which you incorporate what we have read in the course into your paper. You should demonstrate that you have read the material.
The degree to which you forward a clear argument in the paper. For instance, if you say you didnt like a specific reading in the course this isnt an argument. Rather provide reasons and support for why the article wasnt to your liking.
The degree to which you are able to demonstrate thoughtful insights into what we have read/discussed. By the end of the paper I want to be able to say to myself, huh, I hadnt thought about it that way.
This is also a space where you can ask me questions you have about the class content/class discussion. If there was something you wanted to ask but you didn’t get the chance to, now is your chance!
