There is considerable debate over whether or not repressed memories, or recollections of shocking events that are pushed into the unconscious, are real or unreal. Given what you have learned about the psychoanalytic view concerning unconscious influences on behavior and the emotional influences on memory, do you feel that repressed memories are real or unreal? Support your reasoning with information from the text and other course materials.

I believe that a certain extent of repressed memories are real and a certain extent of them are unreal. As our textbook mentioned in the priming experiment, you can be shown a very specific word and have no recollection about that word existing until you see most or even some of its spelling again at a future time, and then all of a sudden you know exactly what that word is and what it means. On the other hand when it comes to having recollection regarding shocking events, or flashbulb memories, I believe that the initial remembrance of it is real, but there are facts about it that your mind makes up about how it wishes the event occurred. I have memories from when I was a child regarding when I tripped and cut my lip open, or playing with my dogs in the backyard of the house I was born in, or going to certain events at a young age and even though I remember who was there and the location of it and the specific event that I’m trying to recall, whenever I talk with my dad about them there are always certain details that I get wrong. I always forget how I tripped or what my first backyard looked like or the decorations that were up at these certain events. I do believe that memories of the events existing are real, but I also believe that our mind makes up certain details about how we wish it went to either make for a better story, or so that it is more enjoyable of a memory, or fit the theme that we are trying to remember.

Hello everyone, when discussing about repressed memories I believe that they are real but maybe the whole recollection is not completely right or exact. Wondering the case of the catholic priest that was accused of sexual abuse from a man that did not remember until his adulthood about the abuse he encounter. In our textbook they define repressed memories as recollections that are so shocking that our mind starts by pushing them into our unconscious. (Fieldman, pg. 219) Considering what I have learn about repressed memories I believe that the man that accused the priest of sexual abuse did actually encounter this but since it was a very traumatizing thing, for protection his mind probably pushed back that memory into the unconscious for a while until his adulthood. Many people might argue that he is having “false memory” but like I stated before people that go though very traumatizing events can repressed the memory for their own protection. I believe the man that accused the priest, the memory might not be 100% recollected but the “big picture” of the traumatizing event will still be in his memories.

Do you feel there is a way to reduce or prevent these errors? Explain and give specific examples. Support your reasoning with information from the text and other course materials.

The familiarity heuristic tricks our mind into placing familiar items, places and things into a higher position of importance and superiority simply due to the fact that we are familiar with it (Module 23, pg. 238). Mental set is the familiarity of problem-solving and applying the exact strategy used in previous problems to solve similar problems (Module 24, pg 248). Both of these mental rhetorics can grant errors when practiced in conjunction for problem solving in social conflicts because it does not allow for our way of thinking to broaden. It also limits the problem-solving attitude we bring forth with everyday tasks. In a way, we can think of these two terms as ‘conditioned’ mental restraints. A way in which we can prevent these errors would be by being more open minded and taking criticism as an opportunity for growth and enlightenment. We should always listen to others’ way of thinking and explanation so we can learn a different way of viewing certain problems and life in general. Being empathetic towards others can also help avoid falling in the mental set and familiarity heuristic impairment.

Familiarity heuristic leads us to believe that familiar items are superior to those that are unfamiliar(Feldman,2017). While mental set is the tendency to approach a problem in a certain way because that method has worked in the past in a similar situation. Thus, mental set is a framework for thinking about a problem. For example: We always tend to take the same route to a destination we have taken before instead of a new route.Another example is a group of friends trying to figure to go to eat but one will pick up a restaurant she tried before because she familiar to the place without even considering other friends idea or preference. This will lead to social conflict. I believe to reduce or prevent these errors is to look at the whole picture and check every details before making a decision. If we take time to step back and examine the situation before making a conclusion we are less like to make mistake.

The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!  

Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic. 

For the topic you choose:

  1. Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
  2. While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information. 
  3. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.
    Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page. 

Topic choices (pick 1): 

  • Office Art Memo. Memorandum. Your boss, who knows you have been taking a humanities class since he pays for your tuition reimbursement, has tasked you with managing the art budget for your company, expecting you to choose various pieces of art for the new corporate offices.  (Note: Replicas of the works are acceptable since they are more cost-efficient and you are working on a budget.)  Include the following: 
    1. Identify three (3) examples of 19th century Impressionist painting or sculpture and three (3) Post-Impressionist works. Explain how the six (6) pieces of art fall into these two (2) styles. 
    2. In a memo, describe the appearance of your six (6) choices to your CEO so he or she will know what the art looks like and where it would be placed in the corporate offices. 
    3. Explain why each piece is considered to be historically significant. 
    4. Explain how each piece “fits” your company’s overall (or desired) corporate image. Keep in mind that a piece of art is supposed to “say” something about the owner, so describe what would these pieces of art say about your company. 
  • New Composition. Speech. Your uncle’s birthday is in two (2) months, and everyone knows that he loves almost all kinds of music. As a birthday gift for him, you want to have a special piece of music composed in his honor which will be played at a family birthday celebration. Write a speech that you will make to the composer’s agent. Include the following:  
    1. Narrow your choices down to three (3) composers you’ve studied in this course. Choose one (1) of the composers and explain why you want him to write the “birthday present” music. 
    2. Explain why the other two (2) composers were ultimately not selected. 
    3. Specifically identify the musical elements in the composer’s style that you would like to be included in the new music written for your uncle.

  • Harlem Renaissance Poets. Essay & Poem. Choose two (2) poems by different authors from the Harlem Renaissance. Write an essay that:

    2. Identify the elements in each of their poems in which you see evidence of the “double-consciousness” being expressed by each author. 
    3. Fully describe at least two (2) primary themes you see in the poetry written during this time period, referring to specific lines in each of the poems. 
    4. Write your own poem that expresses these identified themes of the Harlem Renaissance.  
  • Women’s Roles Then & Now.Script. Script a conversation between two (2) notable women from the 18th and / or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include: 
    1. Biographical information for each woman. 
    2. The historical status for women in general during the time period in which each woman lived.
    3. What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes. 
    4. What each of the women might think about women’s current roles.
  • Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

The Project Paper will be graded on:

  • The level to which the instructions were followed.
  • The extent to which all four (4) parts in the topic were addressed.

Last week we focused on the biology of psychology and its connection to the human experience of thinking and behavior.  This week we turn to Perception and Memory.  Perception is the second part of chapter 4  (pages 159-181), where we will now learn how we construct our experiences in our minds (connecting what we bring in with our senses to what happens in the mind).  We will learn about research support theories that explain much of what we encounter in our daily lives, which will aid in understand ourselves and others.  I encourage you to read through the figures and work through the labs to demonstrate each of these incredible concepts.

In chapter 7, we introduce the fascinating study of memory, which is a cognitive function that happens at the unconscious level as well as the conscious level.  Memory yet another area of psychology that pervades our lives on a series of levels, and a variety of contexts.  Fun fact, my early research was in memory as this is an area I have always found interesting as it intersects in our lived in many many ways.  This assignment will help you process what you learned as you read the assigned readings. As with last week, and you will see this common theme, the concepts introduced in these two chapter readings do not stand in isolation but rather integrate into the many facets of life.

Once again, adopting and implementing the concept of reflective reading, I want you to reflect on your reading of the assigned chapters for this week (chapter 4, pages 159-181 and chapter 7) and share what crossed your mind as you read the various information presented to you.  Address the following questions as you reflect:

  • Are there any concepts that jumped out at you?
  • Did you have any ah-ha moments?  What connections did you make as you were reading?
  • Did you engage in the study break activities provided to you within the chapter and did you find that you had difficulty completing them and/or did you find them helpful?
  • Did you develop questions as you were reading that were answered?  Were any of them left unanswered?
  • After reading the assigned reading this week, has it piqued your curiosity to learn more and if so, what questions do you have moving forward?

Use the questions I listed as a guide (use them to guide your reflection – your thinking about your thinking, aka metacognition).  Please share your reflection in a minimum of one full page, not to exceed two pages.
