Culture and Socialization in Advertising/Marketing

Since the early 1980’s Dr. Jean Kilbourne has been conducting research on how advertisers portray women in the United States. Please review the following video trailer which provides a small portion of one of her lectures on this topic.

The video link posted in our Discussion Board is just a trailer. The extended documentary is approximately 45 minutes. You are welcome to watch the full documentary but I believe that the trailer will provide enough information for students to think about their own views on advertising and discuss your own thoughts on advertising in our culture. You are not required to answer all of the questions that I’ve posted, these are just some ideas to start a conversation.

After reviewing the trailer please post your thoughts on how advertisers and the media portray gender roles in our society. For example, Dr. Kilbourne focuses on the objectification of women in the media. Men are also portrayed in a specific way in our culture. How do you think these images may affect individuals? Some images may be positive and others may be negative. What is your opinion on marketing and influence in our culture? Do you believe that marketing helps to shape our culture or is marketing a reflection of the existing culture? Please note that this video clip was filmed in 2012. Do you believe that these images are changing in our current culture? Feel free to expand your thoughts beyond advertising and also consider how people in our culture are depicted in movies, TV shows, and books.

Developing personal communication skills

Many people have been in situations in which they find it difficult to communicate. Improving your written
communication skills and being comfortable speaking to people are extremely important to help prevent these
difficulties. Locate a formative, evaluative, or diagnostic assessment or test that evaluates your communication
abilities. Additional acceptable types of assessments are defined in the What Are the Different Types of
Business Environment? (Links to an external site.) blog post. Develop a two to three-page APA-formatted
paper in which you analyze your personal communication skills via an assessment.
Be sure to address the following in your paper:
Describe the assessment you used to analyze your skills.
Discuss your communication gaps.
Describe any additional training you need in specific areas of communication.
Analyze how you can improve your current communication skills to prepare you for advancement in your

Reply to the following prompt:
Describe the diagnostic or screening tool selected, its purpose, and what age group it targets.
Has it been specifically tested in this age group?
Next, discuss the predictive ability of the test. For instance, how do you know the test is reliable and valid? What are the reliability and validity values? What are the predictive values? Is it sensitive to measure what it has been developed to measure, for instance, HIV, or depression in older adults, or Lyme disease? Would you integrate this tool into your advanced practice based on the information you have read about the test, why or why not?
