This week, the Argument Paper Outline is due. I wanted to go over some key elements in the assignment.
To complete the assignment, you need to complete and submit the Argument Paper Outline Template. The first page of the template is the title page. You will provide the title of the paper, your name, the course/number, the date, and my name as I am the faculty member for this class.
Following the title page is the first page of the outline. The first thing you need to provide is the revised thesis statement. This is very important! The thesis is what determines the topic sentences and main ideas that follow.
In the outline, you will see three headings all titled Level One Heading. All you need to provide there is a heading for each topic in the outline. An example will follow later in this discussion.
Under each heading, you will provide a topic sentence, main ideas, and supporting research with the information source. For the supporting research, you will want to select quotes and/or paraphrases that support your topic and main ideas. The information source should identify the source from which the quotes and paraphrases came.
The outline requires three distinct topic sentences with supporting main ideas and research. It also requires a completed references page. You will need to provide reference entries for three sources. Those three sources should appear as support for the ideas presented in the outline.
Here is a brief example of what you are being asked to do in the outline. I have left off the title page for convenience.
Revised thesis statement: All cats should be spayed and neutered because it helps control the cat population, leads to improved health of the cats, and improves the behavior of cats overall.
Controls Cat Population
Topic sentence: All cats should be spayed and neutered because it helps control the cat population.
Main Point 1: Spaying and neutering cats controls the cat population because it prevents cats from breeding, thereby limiting the number of unwanted litters.
