I think that the perceived tension of scientism and postmodernism is very human at its core. Scientism concludes that “…all reality to physical or material phenomena.” (Shelly & Miller, 2006). Scientism believes that all reality is only explained by science. This belief centers on the exclusivity of science as the only reason for reality to exist. With this being said, postmodernism questions all the theories that are presented including that of science, henceforth scientism. This tension is very human at its core. Humans are naturally inquisitive and curious. Millions of years of innovation can be traced to this very humanly attitude. Both philosophies can be adapted as worldviews and neither right or wrong but more personal. There are many other worldviews that are all a preference of the person influenced by many factors including culture, experiences, knowledge, among others. With this being said, this tension I think is very healthy as we need some sort of conflict to express our own interests and choices. This tension brings about innovations in science and schools of enlightened thought processes in postmodernism. Religion and spiritualistic beliefs fall grow as a result of this tension which brings about a whole new belief system and thought process especially in health care delivery and systems. In healthcare, there needs to be a holistic understanding implementing elements of science as well as moral and ethical principles to be able to provide efficient and effective care of the whole individual. It is the responsibility of the health care provider or worker to work through these dilemmas to provide the best care possible guided by the philosophies they hold dear to their practice. As it is stated in the lecture, both these philosophies, among others lay a groundwork for the understanding of health care practice today.
