Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system. Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their scope of practice and their full participation throughout the health care system.

For this assignment, you will conduct research on the current scope of practice for your specialty and efforts that are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced nurse in positively influencing the health care system. Write a 1,250-1,500-word paper that includes the following:

  1. A discussion of the scope of your future role as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope.
  2. A discussion of three professional nursing organizations that you think are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. Of these organizations, evaluate the one that you would most like to join. How do its goals and mission fit in with your worldview and philosophy of care? How might membership in this organization improve your practice?
  3. A discussion of a controversial or evolving issue that is most likely to affect your scope of practice or role in the next few years. How do you think this issue could influence the profession and other stakeholders, and why does it matters to the advanced registered nurse?

In order to effectively manage a virtual team, managers must establish expectations and occasional hold face-to-face meetings.  As technology evolves, more businesses are resorting to virtual teams and virtual meetings to conduct daily business operations.  Although employees who telecommute to work are more productive, they lack creativity as discussed in one article in this week’s reading (Miller & Rampell, 2013).  In recent years, I have hosted and been a part of several virtual meetings.  I am involved in five committees related to the water industry.  Since the committee members are only able to meet face-to-face annually at a national conference, we meet virtually once every month.  The two methods used to communicate each month are by telephone and GoToMeeting.  Both means of communication are viable for what each committee is trying to accomplish.  

 

The steps that I would take to manage a virtual team who telecommutes for work would be to first establish a frequency of face-to-face meetings if possible.  If the team is in the same locality, I would create monthly meetings.  If the team was spread out, I would create an annual face-to-face meeting.  As discussed in one article, there is nothing more that strengthens virtual teams than face-to-face meetings (Goman, 2012).  Secondly, I would establish cross-cultural awareness among the team.  I think that it is important to be culturally aware of our colleagues.  If all work is completed over email, we can easily lose touch with the cultural differences that make us all unique.  Since culture has a lot to do with our work ethic, it is imperative to infuse a sense of culture into our daily work and the occasional face-to-face meetings can assist with this endeavor.  

 

The platform that I would use to manage virtual teams would likely be GoToMeeting since I have the most experience with its capabilities.  GoToMeeting is user-friendly and provides capabilities such as screen-sharing and verbal communication.    The meetings can be recorded for future use and the platform allows for face-to-face interaction via webcam.  I would require people to log in and attend daily, weekly and monthly meetings to ensure that the team is communicating effectively with one another.  Lastly, I would measure performance against the reasonable expectancies that are predetermined for each particular job function.  Since it is virtually impossible to effectively manage without measures in place, I would hold either biweekly or monthly performance meetings with each team member to review their job performance.

Why do you want to be a physician?

1 – my mom had a tumor and I almost lost her. Growing up in a 3rd world country, any medical condition is
almost like a death sentence not alone tumor. It took 4 months before she was properly diagnosed due to lack
of subspecialty doctor and advance medical equipments. The diagnosis was just one part of the equation.
Upon diagnosis, the lack of surgeon and adequate medical facilities to do surgery brought a whole despair.
Luckily, MSF ( medicine sans frontiers- volunteer medical staff from Europe) were doing a missionary mission
and upon request, submitted my mom medical file to their neurologist surgeon in Europe who agreed to do the
surgery. The other hurdle was the medical transport of mom to Europe for surgery. She was by then paralyzed,
convulsions and hooked to an IV tube. It took another two weeks before she flew out. My exposure to that
ignited the spark to do medicine. Mom surgery was a success and she went on to fully recovered from it. The
tumor never came back and she has been tumor free for 11 years now.
2- However, that was not the only experience or the last that kept my passion to become a surgeon burning.
After moving to the USA, my professional career took me into the US military. For the past eight years, I have
been working as a medic under the wings of army medical providers. Early on in my military career, I was
quickly put to test when one of the distracted soldier who was doing a vehicle maintenance forgot he still had
his cigarette tucked between his lips and went underneath the vehicle to check on why the veh wasn’t starting.
Unknowingly that it was due to a fuel leak, he ended up with a 2nd degree burn to his face and torso. As a
medic on the scene, I knew it was just a matter of time before he completely loses his airway. Nervous and with
my heart racing, I ran and grabbed my aid bag. I knew that if I was to buy him time until he is evacuated, I
needed to perform a cric. Nothing in my training prepared me for the extra emotions that came with having a
real lifesaving situation. During training, we were taught most emergency procedures and we practiced them
hundred times but as a default thought, we knew our training patients always survived. This however, was real,
someone’s life was literally hanging in balance and I couldn’t afford any mistake. News of the fire quickly went
around the army fob and a fellow medic ran up to assist. Her presence boosted my confidence and I was able
to perform the cric and intubate the soldier. After few minutes, I had more medical support and the Soldier was
evacuated out to a higher echelon of care. He survived his burn and ended up being medically few years later.
The smell and the sight of burn flesh still trigger those memories and keeps my passion to further my medical
education with medical school. I am excited and thrilled at the thought of being able to increase my medical
knowledge and save more life as a surgeon.
