You work for a business information firm that provides clients with summaries of publicly available information on a range of businesses. Your boss comes to you and says that an increasing number of clients have been asking that the firm develop a catalog of company profiles on businesses that have something to do with the oil and gas industry. The clients want this catalog so that they can quickly identify which companies they may want to carry out additional research on, and possibly have your firm do that research. You’ll need to write company profiles that provide an objective, fact-based summary of:

  1. What the company does;
  2. How it has performed; and
  3. What challenges and/or successes the company has had over the past 3–5 years.

You are to write a profile of either a company that is focused on one activity in the oil and gas industry (e.g., a small exploration and production company, or a small service company whose primary business is drilling wells) or one business unit within a larger company involved in multiple industry activities (e.g., the refining unit of an integrated oil and gas company, or the seismic survey unit of a large, multi-purpose service company).

Preparing the Company/Business Unit Profile

Select a company or a business unit within a company of interest to you that is involved in the oil and gas industry or in providing one or more services to the industry.   • News articles (from newspapers, news magazines, trade journals, etc.).
  • Government websites and reports (e.g., www.eia.gov).
  • Blogs.

The profile should be at least 500 words, but no more than 750 words in length. You should cite the materials you read when writing your company profile and provide a bibliography at the end of your work. For this assignment, you will research a topic connected to the class theme of “Monsters.” You can use a paper that you already wrote and expand it or you can choose a new topic on that theme that interests you. You will read articles, books, and other materials outside of class, and may elect to interview people whose expertise or experience is relevant to your topic.

The Steps:

  1. Pick an issue related to the broad theme of “monsters” that interest you e.g something from the class or Frankenstein’s Cat.
  2. Narrow down the topic to something you can cover in 6-8 pages e.g. How have zombies movies influenced the conversation about global pandemics?
  3. Read articles and books, and watch some media clips that interest you on that topic. Make sure to get sources you agree and disagree with
  4. Put your sources on your source list. You must use the sources in Essay #3: Annotated Bibliography.
  5. After doing a little research, develop your topic on your issue develop a hypothesis. Basically, take a stand on how your topic impacts the local community. Hint: This will turn into your thesis.
  6. These project will culminate in Essay #4

Essay Options:

OPTION #1: Write a 2000+ argumentative research paper, written in response to a research question of your choice about monsters.

OPTION #2: Write a Prezi or Presentation on your topic that is at least 20 slides and presents a clear argument

  • Should use a minimum of 8 Sources from the Annotated Bibliography with quotes from each source that are cited correctly with MLA
  • Images should be used to visually convey your argument and cited properly with MLA
  • This is an argument presentation, so it should not be an essay copy and pasted on to slides nor should it be an outline of a paper

  10. Strong sentences that are both grammatically correct and sophisticated.

For this discussion, you will be considering the variables that  differentiate cognitivism from behaviorism and how this area of  understanding ‘how we learn,’ affects our own ability to effectively  acquire new knowledge and apply to our personal and professional goals.

As you have read this week, cognitivism is a theory that addresses  the mind’s contribution to how we learn. The cognitive revolution  (although considered by some as an overly stated fact) is suggested to  have been a response to the behaviorist movement that rejected  introspection (anti-mentalism), and controversially lead to, what some  consider, a dissolvement of the behaviorist movement. Consider the  following questions about cognitivism and discuss each, basing your  posture on this week’s readings, your past experiences, and your past  knowledge.

  • Why is it suggested that cognitivists disagree with the behaviorist  view that learning only occurs if there is an outward manifestation?  What other notable differences do these two theories suggest?
