    This assignment will give you experience observing and interacting with people outside of the classroom. It has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, synthesize knowledge, and integrate learning in a real-world setting. This goal is accomplished by challenging you to physically attend and observe a group.

    Purpose: To provide you with an opportunity to experience a group setting and analyze how the presence of others substantially influences the behaviors of its members through social facilitation.

    Observe a group discussing a topic of interest, such as a focus group, a community public assembly, a department meeting at your workplace, or local support group.

    Study how the group members interact and influence one another.

    Analyze how the group behaviors and communication patterns influence social facilitation.

    Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, the course text, and additional scholarly sources. The literature should be about group patterns, not about the content of the meeting.

    Process: You will participate as a guest at an interest group meeting in your community to gather data for a qualitative research paper. Once you have located an interest group, contact stakeholders, and explain the purpose of your inquiry. After you receive permission to participate, you will schedule a date to attend the meeting; at which time you will observe the members and document the following for your analysis:  

    ·         How were the people arranged in the physical environment (layout of room and seating arrangement)?

    ·         What is the composition of the group, in terms of number of people, age, sex, ethnicity, and so on?

    ·         What are the group’s purpose, mission, and goals?

    ·         What is the duration of the group (short- or long-term)? Explain.

    ·         Did the group structure its discussion around an agenda, program, or rules of order?

    ·         Describe the structure of the group. How is the group organized?

    ·         Who are the primary facilitators of the group?

    ·         What subject or issues did the group members examine during the meeting?

    ·         What types of information did members exchange in their group?

    ·         What were the group’s norms, roles, status hierarchy, or communication patterns?

    ·         What communication patterns illustrated if the group was unified or fragmented? Explain.

    ·         Did the members share a sense of identity with one another (characteristics of the group, similarities, interests, philosophy, and so on)?

    ·         Was there any indication that members might be vulnerable to groupthink? Why or why not? 

    ·         In your opinion, how did the collective group behaviors influence individual attitudes and the group’s effectiveness? Provide your overall analysis.

Think about the details expressed in your DNP Project Proposal, which was submitted during NURS 8410. In that document, you described your plan for evaluating your DNP Project. Which evaluation method(s) did you select for your project? What new insights associated with the evaluation of your DNP Project have you gained since you developed your DNP Project Proposal?

For this Discussion, you examine your identified evaluation methods and consider how appropriate they now seem for your DNP Project. As you do this, think about principles of evidence-based practice and appropriate theoretical frameworks that relate to this assessment of your evaluation plan. If there are circumstances that prevent you from assessing your DNP Project evaluation plan, you may complete this Discussion using a different evidence-based project.

To prepare:

  • Review      the examples of evaluation presented in the Miake-Lye et al. and McNabney      et al. articles listed in the Learning Resources. Also, consider the      evaluation strategies suggested by Dr. Mauk in the Weeks 4 and 5 media      presentation.
  • Analyze      the evaluation plan you developed as part of your DNP Project Proposal.      Which evaluation method(s) did you identify for your project?
  • If      you have already concluded the evaluation phase of your DNP Project, what      would you do differently—specific to the evaluation plan—if you could?
  • If      possible, compare your project with similar evidence-based projects      presented in other articles from your review of the literature.      Specifically, look at others who had a similar research question or      intervention but evaluated it differently. Consider similarities and      differences in outcomes of these projects. What insights related to your      project does this analysis provide?
  • For      this Discussion, you may also consider the evaluation of other      evidence-based projects implemented in your practicum setting. Discuss      this topic with individuals in your practicum setting to strengthen your      understanding of the evaluation of these projects.

War and Politics Discussion

Throughout the 1980s, the Reagan Administration was struggling to advance and defend U.S. interests in the Middle East. At this time there were several catastrophic setbacks in the nation of Lebanon. The political group Hezbollah, then and now considered a terrorist organization by the United States, carried out a number of successful attacks against U.S. personnel and installations throughout the Middle East. Several U.S. embassies were targets of bombings. In 1983 the U.S. embassy in Lebanon was destroyed in an explosion that killed 63 people, including both diplomats and CIA officers. Six months later, the U.S. Marine barracks in Lebanon was blown up, killing 241 service personnel. A year later, the CIA Station Chief in Beirut was captured, tortured, and executed by agents of Hezbollah.

The Reagan Administration was humiliated and frustrated by these attacks and was determined to retaliate in a meaningful way. Executive Order 12333 legally prohibited any political assassinations by the U.S. government, so the CIA and other departments circumvented this prohibition by recruiting and training Lebanese operatives, working with Lebanese government intelligence agencies, and hiring an ex-Special Air Service (British Special Forces) agent to formulate and execute a plot to kill a Muslim cleric, Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah, who was believed to be a spiritual and political adviser to Hezbollah and involved in its operations. Inter-agency disagreements and miscommunications between the CIA, Department of Defense, Pentagon, and the White House over the feasibility and details of the assassination stalled initial plans and made the actual chain-of-command for the operation unclear.

Nonetheless, understanding that they had received authorization from the United States for the killing to proceed, operatives set and detonated a car bomb on March 1985 on a crowded street in Beirut, just outside of a large mosque where women and children were leaving following prayers. Fadlallah walked away uninjured, but 80 innocent civilians were killed and over 200 were injured. It was later established that Fadlallah was a relative political moderate who had no meaningful connection to Hezbollah’s activities. An outraged international community condemned the United States for the attack, although the Reagan Administration officially denied involvement.
