AN ANALYSIS OF AN AD
For this assignment, you will analyze two one-page magazine advertisements. Your analysis will be heavily informed by what might be called a “mentor text”—a text that helps to guide you, a text that will provide a framework for understanding something. In this case, your mentor text will be a video called Killing Us Softly 4, which was created by a well-known and well-respected media scholar named Jean Kilbourne.
In the video Kilbourne analyzes the portrayal of men and women in contemporary advertising. Your goal for Project #3 will be to apply some of her ideas to two magazine advertisements of your own—two advertisements that you’ll find yourself. You’ll need to focus in on a few of Kilbourne’s ideas and write about how those ideas do or do not hold true for your particular advertisements.
You can find the ads yourself in magazines that you own or that you find online using a search engine. The two ads that you choose should have something in common, so that you have some grounds for comparison. For instance, you might choose two ads that sell the same basic product, but that target men and women differently (for example: a Nike ad in a women’s magazine like Cosmo, and a Nike ad in a men’s magazine like GQ). You might also take a historical approach, using the internet to locate ads for similar products from different decades (for example, a perfume ad from 1950 and a perfume ad from 2010).
Choose ads which will be easy to analyze and write about. Remember, while some ads may be interesting to you, the paper might be difficult to organize. Overly simple ads may also be a problem if you cannot come up with enough material for your discussion. YOU MUST GET APPROVAL FOR YOUR ADS.

Example: This ad for Budweiser beer from the 1950’s and the ad for Budweiser from 2000 both use sexual stereotypes and sex appeal, but the newer ad is much more graphic and blatant.
DESCRIBE EACH AD
After the introduction, describe the verbal and visual elements of your ads in detail so that people reading your paper can picture the ads in their minds even if they do not have access to the printed ads. Organize this description so that it is easy to follow. (Use ideas under C below.)
DISCUSSION
You should discuss the ads in more detail. (Use ideas under A, B, and D below.) Go into some depth about how the ads illustrate what Kilbourne talks about in her documentary. You may also want to use quotations from Kilbourne.
