1) DISCUSSION QUESTION

Consider the following quote by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who believed that thought without language was impossible.

“The limits of my language are the limits of my life.”

For more information on Wittgenstein and his analysis on the importance of language, watch the video Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 – 1951) The Limits of Language.

Next, examine whether it is possible to think without using language. If you believe it is possible, describe the primary ways in which a person might enact so-called “languageless” thinking. If you believe it is not possible, describe what you foresee as major problems with languageless thinking.

2) PEER REVIEW (LINDA)

Hi Professor and class,

It is impossible to have languageless thinking because language shapes our perceptions and reflects our thinking. And our thinking and perceptions shape our language. This is how it is defined in our lesson. This just helps me to understand why I believe you have to be able to see what you are thinking this is how it becomes language, if you can see something for what it is then you can begin to form a language where others may understand what you are saying or what you may be seeing and they are not seeing. So for me, it is impossible to have a languageless thinking.

3)PEER REVIEW (MONIQUE)

After not only listening to the video, but i did a little more deeper research on if thinking without language is possible. According to Psychology Today’s article “Thinking without words,” it is possible to think without words or images. A beeper experiment took place to where they gave people beepers to carry into their everyday natural environments; when the beeper randomly beeps, they are suppose to jot down notes about whatever experience happened to be ongoing when it beeped. The experience revealed everyday inner experience such as inner speech, inner seeing, feelings, sensory awareness, and feature 5, which is unsymbolized thinking. Unsymbolized thinking is the experience of an explicit, differentiated thought that does not include the experience of words, images, or any other symbols. Some people rarely or never have such experiences, others experience unsymbolized thinking at nearly all their waking moments, and others often do and sometimes dont experience it. People who are born deaf experience languageless thinking. Language is the method of human communication either spoken or written. Children who are born deaf can not communicate with words, nor at a young age are they able to write.

I believe that the brain is so powerful that it is possible. There are so many parts of the brain that we dont use and humans are “so smart” that we may be using languageless thinking all the time, but the fact that we have access to words, we do not activate that part of the brain often.
