1. Read the following instructions carefully and follow them if you want credit for your articles. To earn the full 20 points per article, follow instructions as listed below.

  • Select a current (published during this semester) newspaper or magazine article concerning travel. This article should be on Amtrak or some other rail service tourists use, hotels, cruises, etc. At least one article should be from a travel trade publication (i.e. Travel Weekly, Travel Trade, etc.- may be from the Internet as long as it from a travel publication). Articles may be found in any magazine or any section of any newspaper except the travel section (which you should read anyway).
  • Type a maximum of one page, two (2) paragraphs. The first paragraph should be a brief summary of the article. The second paragraph should be how the article relates to travel and your feelings concerning the topic. Your paper should have the following at the top of the page:

1. Title of the article

2. Date of the article

3. Source(s)

Interview someone in the travel industry. This includes travel counselor, tour operator, city/county or state Department of Tourism personnel, Conventions and Visitors Bureau worker, meeting planner, personnel from the Department of Parks and Recreation, airline employee, incentive company personnel, etc. Try to find someone who has your “dream” job. If you have trouble identifying someone in a special area, feel free to seek guidance from your professor. Type a short report on your interview. You do not have to retype the questions. You may answer in paragraph form and the answers do not have to be in the order the questions are listed below. Before you interview someone, look over the questions to determine the order you would like to ask them and add any questions you would like. The purpose of this interview is to help you determine your career direction.
The questions for your interview include the following:

  1. What is your name, organization and position?
  2. Describe your job duties and responsibilities.
  3. What are the special benefits derived from your job?
  4. What is a salary range for a beginning person? (Do not ask their salary-you are just trying to get an idea of what a beginning person may make in a particular field-you may be interviewing an owner or manager who may be able to give a ball park starting salary for a beginner.)
  5. What are some of the most fulfilling aspects of your job?
  6. Are there any negative aspects of your job?
  7. What are the approximate work hours of a typical day or week?
  8. What kind of training or preparation work did you undertake for your position?
  9. Describe some of the professional organizations in which you are involved.
  10. What kind of legislative issues are currently affecting you in your work?
  11. Please describe a typical day.
  12. What are the necessary skills for this position?
  13. Describe some future prospects for growth in the field.
  14. What other positions have you had in the travel industry?

Assignment: Reflection: Religious Spaces

This week, you have considered how one defines the broad and varied concept of religious belief. In this Reflection, you will have the opportunity to explore several religious spaces and choose one to discuss in terms of how the religious space both supports and shapes the religious tradition’s belief system. You may wish to select from one of the religious spaces in this week’s resources, or you may elect to do your own research, finding out more about a religious space that is held sacred by the adherents of the religious tradition you intend to choose for your Final Project.

Questions about this Assignment? Post them in the Contact the Instructor area. That way, everyone in the class will see, and benefit from, the Instructor’s response.

To prepare for this Reflection:

  • Review this week’s course readings, focusing on religious spaces. Consider not just religious buildings, but also other spaces such as family altars and sacred landscapes.
  • Carefully consider aspects of the belief system you chose with regard to how those beliefs both inform and support their religious spaces.
By Day 7

Compose a 1- to 2-page reflective paper in which you do the following:

  • Describe the religious space of the tradition you focused on, and explain how the belief system of that tradition supports and is supported by its religious spaces.
  • Be sure to cite your sources using APA format.

If something comes up that might prevent you from submitting your Reflection on time, e-mail your Instructor immediately! Your Instructor’s contact information is in the Instructor area.
