An important part of analyzing research approaches includes understanding the positive and negative aspects of varied forms of social research. Ethnography as an approach allows a researcher to immerse in a unique social world in order to experience the lives of those who live there. The most intriguing aspects of this type of qualitative research is how the researcher maintains an ethical and neutral stance, how the experience can impact them, and how they use the experience for positive social change.

In your paper, you will present the benefits of ethnographical research in terms of understanding a unique social world, as well as understanding the qualitative researcher’s role in performing and reporting on ethnographic research. You will do this through the resources provided, your own research of immersive ethnographical approaches, and also through critiquing Dr. Loïc Wacquant’s work.

In your paper, include the following sections/components:

Role of Researcher (One to two pages)

  • Explain the researcher’s role in qualitative research in general and specifically in an ethnographic approach.
  • Discuss the unique issues that researchers should be concerned about in qualitative research.
  • Explain the challenges researchers face in ethnographical research.
  • Discuss specific actions researchers can take to ensure they retain their ethical and neutral stance in performing qualitative research and reporting their qualitative research results.

Loïc Wacquant’s Research (One to two pages)

  • Summarize what Loïc Wacquant’s research was about.
  • Determine whether or not Wacquant maintained an ethical and neutral stance.
  • Justify the research approach Wacquant chose to take.
  • Explain whether or not this could have been possible with a quantitative research study.

Impact of Research (One page)

  • Discuss how qualitative research and, in particular, ethnographic research, can inform our understanding of unique social worlds.
  • Describe the potential impact of research in supporting positive social change through public policy.

The Value of Qualitative Research paper

Locate a nursing article from a peer-reviewed journal which addresses an area of interest or concern you have.

The article criteria are as follows:

-Must be from a peer-reviewed NURSING  journal

-Must be published within the last five years (2015 to present)

-You may access the article within one of the FAU online databases, or Google Scholar.

-You will utilize this article as the basis of your APA Scholarly Paper.

-Upload a copy of your article to the Discussion Board titled Library Assignment Articles! Provide an explanation in the discussion as to your rationale for selecting this article.  You must reply to at least two peers regarding their respective articles.

Submit the scholarly paper to the assignment drop box.

1. This paper is to be a reflection on a scholarly article that you found from a peer-reviewed nursing journal. (For guidelines regarding appropriate journals, please refer to the Library and APA resources posted in Unit 1).

The paper needs to meet the following criteria:

  1. Addresses an area of nursing in which you have an interest (pediatric, community, nurse anesthesiology, etc.)
  2. Review the article and determine if a holistic nursing theory grounded in caring science is evident, and if so, how it guides nursing practice.  Answer the following questions:
    1. Does the author identify nursing interventions that are guided by the theory?
    2. Are the nursing interventions holistic and caring?
    3. Why or why not?
    4. If there is no theory identified, you need to recommend a holistic theory grounded in caring science. Include your rationale for choosing this caring science theory.
    5. Identify two nursing interventions based on that theory (if the author has named nursing interventions), are these holistic and caring and could emerge from the theory you have identified?
    6. If the author has not identified nursing interventions or if those interventions presented in the article do not illustrate holism and caring, then you should recommend two nursing interventions).
  3. Applies Sister Roach’s 6 C’s, Mayeroff’s Caring Ingredients, and/or one theory of caring science to the article review (Examples include Boykin & Schoenhofer’s Nursing as Caring, etc.) OR the student may identify and apply a caring theory that could be applied to the paper with prior approval from the professor. All concepts within your selected theory must be utilized.  EACH concept from your selected theory must be applied.
  4. Provides an article that has been written within the past five years
  5. Adheres to APA 7th edition format throughout. Headers are to be utilized to organize your thoughts and provide guidance to the reader.
  6. Please NOTE: APA/Scholarly papers do NOT support the use of first or second person.  For this assignment, you may use first person only in the first paragraph.  I highly suggest that you do not do this! My suggestion is to remain in the third tense (this author, this writer, an individual, one, a nurse, et cetera) throughout your paper.
  7. Please remember to utilize citations throughout.  Also note that articles and studies do not produce themselves; therefore, there should be no references to an article or study in your paper-only the authors.

Writing A Comparison/Contrast Essay

Brief Guide to Writing A Comparison/Contrast EssayWriting a comparison/contrast paper involves comparing and contrasting two subjects. A comparison shows how two things are alike. A contrast shows how two things are different. Choosing a TopicWhen you choose a topic, be sure not to choose two totally unrelated subjects. You must start with subjects that have some basic similarities. For instance, you could choose to compare/contrast two movies, two authors, two modes of transportation, or two sports figures, but you would not want to try to compare train travel and Babe Ruth!

Assignment: Somatic Symptom Disorders

Individuals with somatic symptom disorders tend to have considerable difficulty with how they experience and appraise their bodily symptoms. The illness and the dysfunctional focus and behavior around the illness can assume a central role in the person’s life.

Somatic symptom disorders were originally thought of as “hysterical,” without legitimate medical causation, or as hypochondriasis. Though thinking has changed, negative judgments about unfounded illnesses can still be attached to individuals with these disorders. The boundary between medical and emotional problems can be further blurred. In some cases, an individual labeled with one of these illnesses may simply be experiencing a developing medical condition that has not yet been well defined. For all of these reasons, social workers need to take particular care in diagnosing somatic symptom disorders and in providing a fully biopsychosocial and multidisciplinary approach.

In this Assignment, you describe what that approach might look like for one client.

To prepare:

  • Imagine that Jennifer Brea, whose TEDTalk (TED Conferences, LLC, 2016) you watched, is referred to you for ongoing supportive therapy when her psychiatry consultant decides that she does not have a conversion disorder. Despite the psychiatrist’s opinion, her primary care physician ignores that consult and labels Jennifer with the conversion disorder anyway. Be sure to investigate what the ‘conversion’ diagnosis means when responding.
  • Record your presentation using Personal Capture (record audio, video, and screen). See Kaltura Media Uploader in left-hand navigation menu in course for directions on recording and uploading media.
By Day 7

Submit a 5-minute recorded PowerPoint (5–7 slides) in which you address the following:

  • Explain in a concise professional manner how you would conduct your first meeting with Jennifer. Identify specific steps you would take to understand her circumstance and needs.
  • Explain how you would proceed with her medical team in terms of advocacy for her as a client believed to have this condition.
  • Explain why you would need to take a biopsychosocial approach to her ongoing care.
  • Explain what social, family, vocational, Internet, and medical supports you would explore to help with her longer-term stabilization.
  • Analyze the controversy in diagnosing a mental disorder based on unexplained physical symptoms. Within your analysis, consider how power and privilege influence who provides the diagnoses and which groups are more likely to be diagnosed with certain disorders. Explain your thoughts on this debate.

Support your presentation with research and references to scholarly literature.

Include a transcript and/or edit closed captioning in your presentation to ensure your presentation is accessible to colleagues of differing abilities
