Committee hearing

This assignment will require that you observe a Congressional committee hearing, con-duct
research on the topic, and report your findings. Committees are the workhorses of Congress, and much of the
legwork regarding the construction of legislation occurs at this stage of the process. This assignment will
acclimate you to the inner workings of this stage of the legislative process. The Assignment Your job in this
assignment is to:•Watch at least 1 hour of a legislative committee session (of your choice). Rules committees
will get you straight to some legislation. Other committees will include a mix of hearings on specific legislation,
while others will be focused on information and/or policy discussions. Identify and describe one piece of
legislation or the topic of interest that is being discussed by the Committee. If a bill is being discussed:–Identify
the bill (HR 31, S 2314, e.g.).–Provide a summary of the bill (This bill would…e.g.).•If the committee is not
discussing a specific bill:–Identify the topic of the hearing (In this hearing, the committee is discussing…,e.g.)–
Discuss some of the points brought up in the hearing (Some members were concerned about…, e.g.).1
•You will also need to engage in some outside research on that bill/topic. You do not need a prescribed number
of sources, but the source material you utilize should be high-quality information (no user-generated content,
e.g.). For example, if you watch a committee hearing on hemp laws in the United States, you may consult the
literature to see what impacts hemp legalization may bring. Or, if you watcha committee hearing on the impacts
of covid-19 on education, you may want to conduct research and include a description of the data on those
impacts. You have some flexibility here. Feel free to consult with me as to what your ideas are, or where to go
for your research. Google scholar and the University library are both great first-run attempts at conducting your
research. Identify and describe the discussion around the legislation/topic. For example, were experts called in
to testify? Was there heated debate between members of the committee? Did other members of the committee
speak? Questions addressed? Did it appear to be very divisive or was there consensus? You are not required
to use any of these examples, but this level of analysis is what is expected in your paper. Provide your thoughts
on the portion of the committee meeting you watched. For example, is the legislation interesting?

Roaches

Read the following fictitious speech by Dale Gribble. Answer the questions that follow. Speech I
am a new homeowner and let me tell you- it is always work! I am a professor of mathematics and statistics and
that is how I filter everything. I had a hypothesis about German cockroaches that recently infested my Florida
house. I have a hypothesis that I tested. I wondered if every cockroach infesting my house was a German
cockroach, or another type of cockroach. I concluded that approximately 70% of the cockroaches that infested
my house were German cockroaches. How did I arrive at that conclusion? I consulted the Florida Department
of Agriculture and learned that 50% of the cockroaches in Florida are German cockroaches and 70% of the
cockroaches found in Pasco County, Florida, (where I live) are German cockroaches as well. I then generalized
that nearly all of the cockroaches in Pasco County, Florida, are German Cockroaches. I also counted 10
cockroaches of the tens of thousands infesting my house, and I noted that 7 of the 10 cockroaches were
German cockroaches. My cockroach infestation is analogous to the Great Rattle Snake Infestation of 2010.
Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snakes infested my subdivision that year. There were 10,000 snakes located and
killed- and 9,990 of them were Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snakes. Both infestations were similar and nearly
every one of the invaders was of one particular type.
Questions:

  1. Does Dale provide an informal or formal inductive argument? Why?
  2. Does the sample size that Dale discusses logically lead to his conclusions? Why or why not?
  3. Are the generalizations that Dale makes accurate based upon the sample size and confidence level? Why or
    why not?
  4. Are the analogous arguments that Dale makes accurate based upon the sample size and confidence level?
    Why or why not?

David McCullough Mornings on Horseback

Papers should be 5-7 pages (about 1,500 words) long, with an additional cover sheet, endnotes, and
bibliography. They should be typed and double-spaced. Use the Chicago citation style in crafting your review.
Use reasonable margins and type-size. Bibliographical information for the book should be provided, as follows:
Author. Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year Published.
Number the pages of your review in the lower right-hand corner of each page.
Proofread your paper to check for spelling and grammatical errors. Make sure that nouns agree with pronouns,
possessive, and verb forms. Keep verb tenses consistent. Watch out for homonyms (such as to, two, and too).
Content and writing ability will both be evaluated. Do not use “you” or “I.” Do not use others’ reviews.
Writing the Book Review
Some issues to analyze are the author’s thesis, use of sources, clarity, bias, credentials, and organization. How
does this book complement other information you have learned from the textbook, in class, or from outside
sources? Is your book well-written? Interesting? Would you recommend this book to others?
You should make sure that your review is above all an evaluation of your author’s performance, using the
criteria I’ve assigned, with many examples. A typical book review is organized like this:
I. Introduction: author’s name, title, sense of whether you like the book, foreshadow the outline of your paper to
come.
II. Body
A. Author’s Credentials (use your own words to describe his education, books he’s written, and other important
experience. Provide lots of examples. Use your own words , and provide a citation about where you found out
about him. This section should be only one paragraph (perhaps 1/4 page) long.
B. Author’s Thesis and is it Believable (one short paragraph)
C. Author’s Use of Sources (one-two paragraphs) Tell me which types of sources he uses, and provide multiple
examples of each. Be specific.
D. Author’s Organizational Style (one paragraph) Provide multiple examples.
E. Author’s Bias/Neutrality (one-two paragraphs) Provide examples.
F. How does this book complement any other material (assigned films, assigned readings, or common sense)
on this topic. Provide specific examples.
G. Is it well-written? Provide examples
H. Is it interesting? Provide examples
I. Does your author provide the reader with assistance? Provide examples of maps, charts, glossaries…)
J. Other evaluative areas, as appropriate.
III. Conclusion (one paragraph) Briefly restate your main points, using slightly different language, and give me
the bottom line: Do you recommend this book?
