William is a 44-year old project manager for a large commercial construction firm. He started out as a gifted carpenter who greatly enjoyed designing and building custom furniture. However, after several promotions, he focuses on bringing in new business. He spends many work hours at his computer or on the telephone. He is divorced and rarely sees his two daughters. In recent years, he has gained weight and is displeased with his appearance, but has no interest in or energy for exercise. He does not sleep well because he worries about business problems at night. He was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. Although he is financially secure, he rarely takes vacations or socializes outside of the office. He has begun to feel that his life is pointless.

Writing a Brief Draft

At this point in the course, you have developed a focal question, reviewed articles related to your topic, and have designed an outline of your final paper. Using all of that information, begin the writing process now. Effective writers create a draft of their paper and revise that draft one or more times before producing a final paper. Your draft-writing process begins with this assignment and continues in Module 4. In Module 5, you will submit your final draft of this paper.

This assignment requires you to write a draft of the first few pages of your final paper, using current APA standards for editorial style, expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations, and references. 

The following components, each in current APA style, must be included:

  1. Title page
  2. Running head with page numbers
  3. 2-3 pages of the body of the paper. Be sure to:
    1. Articulate a research question which is specific, researchable, and important to the field. This should be the same focal question you submitted in Module 2.
    2. Provide an introduction to your paper, introducing your topic and providing an overview of the main points you will discuss in further detail in the final paper.
    3. Review at least 3 academic references. These should be academic references taken from the list of 10 references you submitted in Module 2. Your review of each source should include the following:
      1. The main topic
      2. The focus or thesis of the journal article
      3. The argument the author is making and its relevance to your focal question
      4. The type of article—published, original research, meta-analysis, or reflection piece
      5. The key findings of the study
      6. Your opinion about the merits of the study, including future points of interest or research
      7. Analysis of how the information/research findings in each article confirm or contradict the findings in the other articles you have chosen.

Did he have a chance to win the case? Please explain. 

2.      Case 2 (20 points): A small company in Dallas (13 employees) was hiring a new accountant. They made an offer to one suitable candidate. The position required 6 hours of work on Saturday. The applicant said that he would accept the offer if he had Saturdays off because of his religion (he was Jewish). The manager said that it would not be possible and terminated the offer. The applicant considered that action to be illegal because the company had to respect his religious beliefs. Does the applicant have a right to sue the company? Explain your answer. 

3.      Case 3 (20 points): An American, a Russian and a Chinese applied for a position of a waitress in a Chinese restaurant in Houston.  Although the American and Russian applicants had more years of work experience as waitresses and slightly better recommendations than the Chinese lady, the latter was hired. Is it legal? Explain.  

4.      Case 4 (20 points): An Asian woman (4’7” height and 90 lb. weight) applied for a position of a fire-fighter but was turned down during the first face-to-face interview because of being “too tiny” for such a job. The manager explained his decision by saying that with such height/weight, it would not be possible for the lady to, say, carry a person from the fifth floor of a burning building, so she would not be able to fulfill her job responsibilities and would even create danger for others. The Asian lady was upset and promised to sue the company. Does she have a case (can she possibly win)? Explain. 

5.      Case 5 (20 points): A company formally implemented an affirmative action program to compensate for the lack of women working for this company. The company conducted an extensive recruitment but the short list of qualified applicants included 5 men and only 1 woman. There was only one position available. Although the woman was less qualified than any of the five men, she was hired because of the affirmative action protocol. Was it legal?  Explain your answer.
