Option 1: Traditional Recap Assignment

Instructions:

After reviewing the material for the chapter, you are to answer the following questions in 5 to 7 sentence responses per question set (group of questions, #1, #2, etc.) . Please remember to consider all questions being asked and to use material from the chapter to support your responses.

Your responses should demonstrate a clear engagement and understanding of the course material, critical application of the sociological concepts/theory and should include clear grammar and sentence structure. Please review the assignment rubric under ‘Course Resources’ for clearer indication of grading distribution and let  me know if you have any questions/concerns.

Questions:

How would a conflict theorists explain the reasons why some populations are allowed to be more deviant and criminal than others? (think about race, ethnicity, gender, sex, etc.) How would a conflict theorist critique the fact that certain populations of color are over-represented in the US prison system? How could you apply this logic to the recent ‘Anti-Social Distancing’ ‘protest’ that have occurred around the US in recent days?

To better understand the idea that race is a social construction and the real life impact that it has on individuals, I would like for you to research the effect that  the corona-virus (Covid-19) has had on xenophobia, hate crimes and the perceptions of race in the US. Find one article or news story about xenophobia and the corona-virus. How does this article demonstrate the concepts of racialization, racial formation and racial projects? Now you should use one of the three theoretical paradigms to analyze the story. Please provide the link to the news story.

Read the following scenario and answer the questions below. Your entire response for this question should be about 5 to 7 sentences in length (minimum)As usual, 24-year-old Carla left her apartment around 10:00 p.m. to jog to her boyfriend Casey’s apartment two miles away. She planned to spend the night with him and jog back home the next morning. Carla lived in a fairly safe neighborhood in Centerdale, but Casey lived in a dilapidated apartment complex that was mostly hidden off the main road, between a bar called Bikers-R-Us and a two-story county office complex used by probation officers and drug rehab counselors. Carla usually arrived between 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., but when she failed to reach his place by 11:00 p.m., Casey got worried. He started calling Carla on her cell phone, but the calls kept going to her voice mail. He called and informed the police. Before calling the police, however, he hid the methamphetamine that he had already prepared for a couple of Carla’s clients who were supposed to arrive at midnight. He also hid the marijuana that he was planning to smoke with Carla. The police found Carla’s body within ten minutes in an area covered with trees, between the main road and the apartment complex where Casey lived. An investigation showed that Carla had been sexually assaulted. She had died of strangulation. Task: What theories of victimology relate to Carla’s case of victimization? Use at least 2 different theories in critically analyzing Carla’s experience. According to you, which victimization theory is most relevant to this case and why? Do you feel that Carla precipitated or was partially to blame for the crime? Give reasons for your answer. How might a structural functionalist analyze Carla’s experience? (Use one structural functionalist theory in your answer)

Option 2: Spotlight on Police Brutality

For this option, you will do a short research project on the social/political implications of the police brutality. You should find some evidence of the impact of police brutality on particular communities and groups. Find at least two cases of police brutality within the last 5 years (please include a reference page with your source information). You can respond in the written form (minimum of 1.5 pages double spaced and include an APA formatted reference page, this should serve as practice for your essay), you can respond in a minimum 5 to 7 minute oral essay in which you answer the questions (you can record yourself via video/audio and upload your recording and you should still upload a reference page) or you could create a short 5 to 7 minute PowerPoint presentation in which you include the answers to the questions and provide some more insight. Your short presentation should include at least 8 slides of information and you should record your presentation and submit your file here.

In my experience nurses are highly respected and the general public tends to think of nurses as people that they can depend on to take care of them and their loved ones. In my opinion nurses are the face of healthcare. However, according to Dean, “the public perception of nursing varies depending upon the timeframe.” Nursing was first performed by men who magical healing powers (Dean). Nursing was also at one time performed by prostitutes. With the introduction of Florence Nightingale the nursing began to take on a more respected and well thought of profession (Dean). Nursing can be influenced by culture, the media, and Hollywood. Hollywood, for example, often show nurses, played by actors, as sex symbols or drug addicts (Dean). I feel that the media has the biggest impact on nurses. People tend to post everything about their lives on social media, even nurses. Sometimes this can have negative consequences depending on what is being posted. Posting negative comments about a work day can cost a person their job. In today’s day and age employers will look at a potential employee’s social media account before decided whether or not to hire that person.
According to Dean, “standards of professional performance are defined by nurses’ behavior in their nursing roll. Standards of professional performance include ethics, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, communication, leadership, collaboration, professional performance evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.” When following the standards of practice nurses can promote a positive opinion by the general public.

For the Unit 9 Assignment, you will synthesize

For the Unit 9 Assignment, you will synthesize your understanding of the theories, best practices, and current trends in psychology to create a case. Begin by deciding on the type of job that interests you within your concentration. Imagine that you are a professional and create a hypothetical client whom you may encounter. Please note that the client does not always need to be an individual, but may be an agency, organization, or institution. Here are some examples of a starting point for clients in each concentration:Addictions: An adult who is trying to stop using alcohol.Behavior Analysis: A teenager with autism who is having difficulty maintaining appropriate physical boundaries with others.Child Development: An elementary school student who is dealing with the loss of her pet.Industrial/Organizational Psychology: A supermarket that is seeking help with improving employee satisfaction and reducing employee turnover. Please note that these are just some ideas and you should create a client that is interesting and relevant to you. In order to avoid potential confidentiality breaches, this should be a fictitious client, not a real person you know or have worked with.Use the paper structure below to organize the facts and recommendations for your hypothetical client.Client demographics: For individual clients, you should include the clients name, age, marital status, occupation, and relevant family information (such as children or involved siblings or parents). If your client is an agency or organization, describe the type of institution and information on the purpose and employees or clients (for example: A business that specializes in advertising and employs 40 individuals; a high school for children with learning disabilities.) This should be 23 paragraphs.Presenting problem: What is the reason for the client receiving your services? Be specific about the problem, but do not add many extra details by telling the clients story. This should be a 23 paragraph description about the problem as the client perceives it.Goals: What are the clients main intervention/treatment goals? Two or three goals should be provided, and these should be specific and measurable. When writing goals, remember that these should describe the outcome the client wants to achieve. (12 pages)Relevant theoretical constructs: Which theory is relevant to your clients case? Describe the relevant points of the theory and if applicable, which stage(s) are present. (12 pages)For example, Eriksons Psychosocial Theory may be relevant to work with a client who is struggling to develop a sense of self amid peer pressure, particularly the stage of Identity versus Role Confusion. You would clearly describe the main points of the theory and relevant stage(s). Freuds Psychoanalytic Theory may apply to a client using defense mechanisms when dealing with addiction issues. You would give a general description of the theory and then discuss the relevant defense mechanisms.Intervention methods: Synthesize the theoretical model you chose above to explain the intervention methods you will utilize to help you client meet the goals. Remember that interventions should be based on documented evidence in your concentration, meaning that you should support your ideas with academic materials to show how they are appropriate. For example, what intervention strategies could be used to help the child dealing with Identify versus Role Confusion? (12 pages)Cultural considerations: What cultural issues will you need to consider when working with your client? Culture can refer to age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic status. (1 page)Use of technology: Explain how you could use contemporary technology in your work with this client. For example, you could consider how technology is used to:store and organize recordsmaintain confidentiality, such as preventing access to client filesscreen for symptoms of psychological disordersconduct therapy and meetings in non-traditional settings, such as through email or videoconferencingBe sure to address the advantages and disadvantages of using technology for the purpose(s) you choose. (1/21 page)The body of the paper should be 68 pages, not including the title page and reference page. Write the paper using guidelines of Standard American English, and consult the Kaplan Writing Center if you have questions about grammar or format. Remember that all work must be your own and plagiarism is not tolerated. Be sure to review the plagiarism policy in your Syllabus. At least four academic references are required. Your paper should be in APA format.Submitting your AssignmentPut your project in a Word document. Save it in a location and with a name that you will remember. Assignment Headings (5-6 pages)

Introduction And History Of iRobot

  • Provide a brief introduction and history of the company with a focus on understanding where it is positioned and what major challenges it faces today?
  • By history, I do not mean a chronological re-telling, but crucial points that have made your company distinctive and shaped the way in which your company competes: its organizational capabilities or heritage.  (Do not just reiterate the company chronology.)
  • For many companies, the original founder still shapes in terms of values and ideas the direction of a company such as Apple did under Steve Jobs.
  • Do not spend 2-3 pages reiterating the company history unless is it relevant for the future.

The Mission, Visions, Goals, And Strategies Of The Corporation And Of Its Business Units

  • What do they mean in actuality?
  • What is the company doing to realize them?

Stakeholders

  • Who are the major (most powerful) stakeholders in your organization?

Board Of Directors

  • Stead & Stead (2014, 233-234) list five functions of a Board of Directors.  Who is responsible for these functions at your target organization?  How well are they doing?
  1. … they are responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of the firm.
  2. They are responsible for auditing the financial performance of their firms, including being responsible for ensuring that the audited financial statements represent a true and accurate picture of the firm. This is essentially their watchdog role.
  3. They are responsible for the selection and succession of CEOs as well as the determination of CEO pay. If the CEO loses their confidence, they are responsible for replacing him/her.
  4. They are responsible for assessing risks and developing strategies that mitigate risks.
  5. They are responsible for ensuring the ethics and legality of the firms’ activities, thus building and preserving repetitional capital
  • What specific capabilities does your board of directors bring to the boardroom table? What are they trying to do with their appointments?
  • How does the board look through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion?

Executive Team

  • Include an analysis of company CEO.
  • Analyze your executive team. Is it diverse?
  • Find statements they have made to the press, interviews, speeches to their shareholders or employees.
  • Stead & Stead (2014) argue that leaders should be humble, ethical, spiritual, and have the attitude of a servant. To what degree does the organization’s leadership reflect these attributes?
  • According to Stead & Stead (2014) “Successfully implementing SSM requires that strategic managers create and maintain effective sustainability-centered relationships within their firms and among their interconnected plethora of stakeholders (p. 246).”  How effective is the organization’s top leadership at creating and maintaining such relationships?

Organizational Structure

  • Describe the overall organizational structure of the company.
  • What business units or functional areas does the organization have and how much of their sales (monies) go to each area?

Strategic Evaluation And Control

  • Stead & Stead note that “Strategic evaluation and control processes are used to implicitly and explicitly evaluate whether or not a firm’s strategy is achieving its intended results (p. 237).”
  • Evaluate your target company’s strategic evaluation and control processes across the Triple Bottom Line: People, Profit, and Planet.  For data on People and Profit, your best source will probably be the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility Report, but they may also have a site for sustainability reporting.
