About the research paper (choose one (1) project) LEADERSHIP ANALYSIS PAPER: This assignment consists of an analysis and examination of the leadership you experienced in your last job (previous job). Your analysis and evaluation of the leadership experienced must be based on the leadership concepts studied in this course. The focus of the assignment is to demonstrate your command of the course content by applying it to the description and evaluation of your job experience. You may explore concepts such as motivation, job design, reward systems, managing individual and group performance, decision-making processes, etc. The choice of concepts or issues is yours. Your paper will be evaluated based on whether the theories/concepts are described accurately, applied appropriately, and appear relevant to the job situation. Quality papers will provide 1) a synthesis of the various leadership concepts studied in the course into a single comprehensive analysis; and 2) what impact the leadership you experienced had on your performance in that job. Some advice: • Remember this exercise will be graded. It is easy to get carried away telling your “story” and forget that you are writing about leadership concepts and their relationship to your own personal experience with leadership in your identified job. • Make certain you explore your personal experience in the job. Do not write in some generic manner about other people’s experience in similar positions. • You may find it useful to develop a comparative angle in the paper, such as comparing how your experience varied between two different tasks, or comparing your job before and after a change in your supervisor or the company structure. • Do not simply drop in a few theories or concepts without explaining how they relate to your job experience. • Do not focus only on your favorite issue or concept. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the course material. • Cite your references and write using the APA (latest edition) form. The paper should be typed (double-spaced) in 12 point font be a minimum of 15 pages in length. You must be thoughtful in selecting the issues and concepts around which you build your paper, while at the same time concise in your writing to meet the requirements of the assignment. Begin working on this early so you can avoid the end-of-semester crunch. Please DO NOT make the following mistakes on your paper: 1. Write a high-school research paper on the topic assigned. Please, don’t write a paper that tells me what leadership is. Your paper should argue the underlying issues of the topic. 2. No long quotes. Graduate students understand that their job is to sythesize the work of others into coherent ideas. I do not like any quote of more than one sentences. 3. No paraphrasing of articles. As graduate students, you may cite another’s idea, but your work must be original and creative. [I often get papers that feature a list of 15 keys to leadership. It immediately becomes apparent that the student has copied, without referencing, a brochure or book on leadership. That is a basis for failing the course. It is clearly plagarism and will not be tolerated at the graduate level. Graduate students are by definition required to do graduate work.] 4.
