The influence of leadership can be far-reaching in practice and improving patient outcomes even when not in a formal role. Describe advocacy strategies that you can use as a leader to create positive change in your current workplace (ICU). Describe a time when you provided leadership and the outcome. Leadership qualities, developing leaders, and what makes a great leader are all extremely hot topics in today’s healthcare setting. There are many qualities that make a great a leader, however, what every resource seems to come back to is communication. Communication seems to be the foundation the other qualities rest on that differentiate great leaders from mediocre leaders. Brene Brown in her book Daring to Lead, writes how open communication at all levels leads to trust and squashes the rumor vine (Brown, 2018). I strongly believe being open with all levels of staff (open communication) reflects a great leader. This is the style of leadership I try to follow in my current position as the Perioperative Educator. My Director (education) also leads with this quality and as a result her staff is willing to “die on a hill” with her! The Director of Perioperative Services does not believe in open communication and prefers to tell the staff only what she feels they need to know. This style of Newtonian leadership (she believes in hierarchical control) has led to widespread mistrust of the staff with management as well as with each other and is evidenced by the employee satisfaction survey for the last several years. Because of this, I would conclude that Newtonian characteristics in a leader is not effective in my work setting. Characteristics that help me be an effective leader in leading education and research initiatives are the Quantum characteristics such as multifocal, nonlinear, multi systems and value driven (Tim Porter-O’Grady, 2015). This style has led to good relationships with the staff and trust when projects are done. Technological advances, information overload and the abundance of research has shown just how ever changing our world of operating room nursing is today and in the future. Communication devices utilized in our facility include Vocera, and primarily personal phones or work phones.
