From Wikipedia: “In 1965, Gordon Moore, who at the time was working as the director of research and development at Fairchild Semiconductor, was asked to contribute to the thirty-fifth anniversary issue of Electronics magazine with a prediction on the future of the semiconductor components industry over the next ten years. His response was a brief article entitled “Cramming more components onto integrated circuits”. Within his editorial, he speculated that by 1975 it would be possible to contain as many as 65,000 components on a single quarter-square-inch semiconductor.” Moore specifically stated “The complexity for minimum component costs has increased at a rate of roughly a factor of two per year. Certainly over the short term this rate can be expected to continue, if not to increase. Over the longer term, the rate of increase is a bit more uncertain, although there is no reason to believe it will not remain nearly constant for at least 10 years.”
In a nutshell, Moore predicted that for the ten year period between 1965 and 1975, manufacturers would be able to double the number of transistors (the part that allows a CPU to process) on a computer CPU chip for the same price every two years. A coworker of Moore dubbed the prediction “Moore’s Law” and restated as ” CPUs would be twice as fast or half as expensive every 18 months” (paraphrasing).
