The goal of the reflective writing assignment is for you to relate the summer reading (Spare Parts by Joshua Davis) to personal experiences that motivated you to study engineering.    In a short paper, please address any four of the following points:

•Give an overview of the theme of the book.  Ask yourself the question: 

“What does the book say to me about the field of engineering?”

Do not provide a summary of the book, but rather focus on the message that the authors were trying to convey about engineering using a few key points from the book.    

•Each person who reads a book may take something different away from it, based on his/her own personal experiences.  Reflect upon one or two specific experiences from your past that came to mind when you were reading the book.  How did those experiences contribute to your decision for a career in engineering?

• Did reading the book reinforce, diminish or alter your attitude towards engineering as a career in any way?  Explain.

•Imagine yourself in a few months in the following scenario: You have a significant amount of homework. Perhaps you’re having a rough time in one of your classes and many late, sleepless nights. In other words, times are becoming a bit overwhelming academically. What is the one thing from your reading that you might draw on to keep yourself inspired, to sustain your interest in your chosen field? 

•Did reading the book change your view on the US immigration system?  Explain.

Essay Guidelines:

•Do not address the points above separately, but rather write one coherent, well organized essay that includes the four selected points.

•No title page: Type your name in the top left-hand corner of essay. Double space, and begin. Continue double spacing until the end of the essay.

•Length:  between 1 ½ and 2 typed pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font size, with 1” inch margins.

  • Compare, contrast, synthesise and critically analyse the academic research on this topic.
  • Present an overall, evidence based conclusion on the topic.

You must write a 2,500 word critical literature review on this topic. You must use good quality academic sources to give an overview of 21st Century Leadership, such as academic journals and quality practitioner materials and sources. You must discuss and critique the sources that you use in order to reach evidence based conclusions.

You are required to use good quality academic sources throughout your work to support your arguments.

A critical literature review requires you to look at good quality research on your chosen topic to give an overview of the research in this area. This will require you to discuss academic definitions, identify key themes in the literature, and discuss the potential applications and implications of the literature and to show that you understand the quality of the sources that you are using.

Complete your discussions with an overall conclusion which is based on and referenced with quality academic material.

For the Module 3 SLP you will be applying the concepts you learned in the background materials regarding conflict and negotiation to a situation from your own personal experiences.  Carefully review the background materials regarding types of conflict, causes of conflict, negotiation stages, and conflict management styles.  It is important to first understand these comments from the background readings before starting this assignment.

Once you have thoroughly reviewed the background materials, think of a situation in the workplace where a conflict erupted and management had to intervene and some type of negotiation was involved.  Then write a three page paper addressing the following four questions, and make sure to cite at least one of the required background readings for each of your four answers :

  1. Was this conflict functional or dysfunctional? 
  2. What was the cause of the conflict?  Use the terms from the background materials in your answer – e.g. was the conflict a result of interpersonal issues, a specific task involved, due to inter-organizational issues, etc.
  3. Of the five approaches to conflict management outlined in Chapter 1 of Raines (2013) which approach was used by management to resolve this conflict?
  4. Did the negotiations involve integrative or distributive bargaining?  What stages of negotiation did management go through, and did these stages match the four stages discussed in Sims (2002) or the five stages discussed in the Pearson interactive tutorial?
