In the Blacklist, Raymond Reddington, a former U.S. Navy officer turned high-profile criminal, voluntarily surrenders to the FBI after eluding capture for decades. He tells the FBI that he has a list of the most dangerous criminals in the world that he has compiled over the years and is willing to inform on their operations in exchange for immunity from prosecution. However, he insists on working exclusively with a rookie FBI profiler by the name of Elizabeth Keen, who we later learned is his daughter. In Season 6, Reddington gets arrested in New York after 30 years on the run and faces the death penalty. Reddington is to be prosecuted on a number of crimes, the Attorney General decides the immunity should be voided and kept secret but the Assistant Director of the FBI, Harold Cooper, appears in court to testify about it. The judge rules the immunity is valid but a clause about the weapon on Reddington when he was arrested leads to another hearing. Reddington challenges the legitimacy of the search that led to the discovery of his gun and his subsequent arrest in court. The judge denies him access to listen to recording of the call that tipped the police and rules it was a valid search, therefore, the gun would be admitted as evidence to void his immunity agreement. The last order of business is Reddingtonâ€s trial for treason. Reddington insists to the jury that he never betrayed the United States (which, as a reminder, is the only thing he stands accused of in this particular trial); rather, he was framed by Katarina Rostova, the mother of Reddingtonâ€s daughter, who was determined to ruin Reddingtonâ€s reputation once he learned she was a KGB officer and that she reported to the Cabal. Reddingtonâ€s potential acquittal ultimately rests on one important piece of evidence: a tape recording from Dec. 7, 1990, which should prove that Reddington was framed. The jury is sufficiently swayed by the audio theyâ€ve heard, and Red is found not guilty on this particular charge. Overall, I believe Reddingtonâ€s trial was fair and the Judge gave him the benefit of the doubt to prove his innocence.

Very few would argue with the claim that the President’s role as Commander-in-Chief is the greatest formal power that a president possesses. Yet, in the Constitution, only Congress has the authority to formally “declare war.” Presidents for the last 60-70 years have openly stated that they do not need Congressional authorization to use the military to pursue America’s interests on the global stage. As proof, America has not formally declared war since WWII. So, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan, and now Syria have all been military exercises, but not wars in the Constitutional sense.

Has the power of the President of the United States as Commander-in-Chief exceeded constitutional boundaries and should those powers be curtailed, given the constant state of war we find ourselves in? Or should the President’s military powers continue to expand to address the growing chaos in our world, despite the Constitution or in congruence with the Constitution? Explain your answer.
