Re: Topic 4 DQ 1
The Internet has become instrumental in changing both traditional and online learning, as it has made the educational method more accessible with curriculum and resources. With the use of the Internet, the physical “brick and mortar” classroom is slowly losing its position as the main source of learning, making online learning a method that enhances and improves student outcomes. That being said, when it comes to traditional and online learning, there are both similarities and differences.According to the American Sociology Association, although some studies indicate online students slightly outperform those in traditional settings, most show little difference in overall performance (Morgan, 2016). Considering this, focus can be placed on the students to determine a suitable learning environment, based on their comfort level. Both online and face-to-face require a great amount of work, feedback and assignments, as they all play a huge role in the learning experience. Equally as important for both settings is motivation. “Linking lectures to student interests, giving examples that are vivid and intriguing, and building suspense toward resolution of a conflict, these are all techniques of gaining and holding attention” (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2014, p.68). Effectiveness can be measured from the outcomes of motivated students and lessons can be tweaked to tailor those in need of a push. The main objective is to provide engaging lessons that stick with students. On the other hand, there are distinct differences between these learning environments. For instance, according to Nguyen (2015) findings suggest that more mature students with better independent learning skills are better candidates for online learning. In other words, this method requires more self-direction and discipline, which may not be as effective for all learners. In addition, interactions are different as face-to-face communication and feedback is more immediate and accessible than it is online. Another difference is that online learning can provide an education to anyone, anywhere and anytime. This is one of the greatest benefits, as it can provide a world-class education.Variations in the lesson can help provide successful instruction to accommodate learning styles. For instance, through synchronous learning, video lessons and independent practice, students are given the opportunity to absorb content through various channels. With a combination of time spent on a topic, curriculum, and pedagogy, observable outcomes can determine effectiveness. Both environments benefit from incorporating online tools, direct instruction, group and independent work. Giving students options to present their understanding is one method to a fair assessment. Lastly, and most importantly, in order to accommodate learning styles, it is imperative that the instructor gets to know the students in order to present content in a meaningful manner.

Face-to-face and online learning are two different approaches to education that offer students variety in their choice to attend school. No one setting is better than the other, and by using the proper techniques, all learning styles can be properly engaged no matter what the delivery method. In a traditional, or face-to-face classroom setting, the students all attend class in person at pre-allotted times. Classes at the college level are often centered around a lecture delivered by the instructor while students take copious notes. In a non-traditional online setting, however, students typically do not have a set time which they are required to ‘attend’ or participate. Students can complete work at their own pace if they meet their due dates, and assigned readings typically take the place of lectures. In a face-to-face setting, the LMS is simply a supplemental tool used to make turning in assignments easier. Online, the LMS contains the entire course and the teacher and students are 100% dependent on it for instruction and assignment submissions. Online instruction is more time-consuming for teachers than in-person, partly due to student’s perception that their online instructors are available for assistance at all hours of the day (Cowan et al., 2013, p. 11). Though the two types of learning differ, they also share some similarities. No matter the delivery method, colleges/universities always have expectations of instructors such as submitting grades on time, giving final examinations, and having a specific meeting place (whether real or virtual) to conduct class (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2014, p. 30). In both settings, students will be expected to participate in discussions and follow a specific set of guidelines for their work, such as APA. Often face-to-face and online learning have the same program length and availability and offer students the same opportunities to attain a degree. Instructors are expected to address student inquiries and provide specific feedback within both settings, as well as create a supportive and productive classroom culture. Both settings require instructors to appeal to the different learning styles of their students, which will require varied techniques. One type of learner, called the accommodator, prefers to rely on information that is supplied by another, such as an instructor or peer, rather than their own assessment which makes online learning ideal due to the vast amount of always available information (Chen & Chiou, 2012, p. 487). However, divergers, independent and creative thinkers, and assimilators, those who like to consider situation from theoretical perspective rather than factual, would not benefit quite as much from online learning as they would face-to-face instruction. However, if the online instructor incorporated more pictures and details to supplement the online material, this method might be more suited toward these types of learners (Chen & Chiou, 2012, p. 494).Each delivery method, online and face-to-face, share many similarities and differences. Though one may be better suited to a specific type of learner, it is important to remember that it is our job as instructors to figure out how we can adapt our method to suit our learners, not just the students job to adapt to the delivery method.

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1
There is a difference when it comes to online learning contest versus face to face, because of the interactions of the learning from the individual. Because of the pandemic, this is what we now call the new norm. As an educator, I would like to establish the difference that I see with doing both the face to face to face teaching versus the students that are virtual online. According to, (Woldeab, Yawson, & Osafo, 2020) “Today there are no boundaries to what we could learn from each other across the world, and knowledge that was once confined to local environments has now become accessible from anywhere, anytime, and to anyone who has access to the Internet”. Learning can be achieved using the learning platforms of traditional learning or online learning content. Most important, Face to face learning content can be a good thing for some students because of stability. face-to-face instruction is that face-to-face lectures involve students and instructors interacting in real-time. Face to face students can do the following.Students can get one on one support from the instructor in a live session within the classroom setting.Students may not be able to work at a self-pace for assignments. The environment setting can be positive for the students learning engagement. The school setting is a stability setting for the student. In contrast, online students work through lectures and other teaching material at their own pace. They ask questions on online discussion forums and must wait for an instructor or another student to respond. Online challenges have it own challenges for higher education students.Online students can be pushed to a level of work that they may not be familiar with.Instructors may not be available at the time a student may need them for questions.Internet service may cause a delay in sending in assignments.A student may never get to meet the instructor in person or have a live conversation with them in person. However, the virtual online environment has shifted; because most schools are providing the students with the necessary material that is needed to complete assignments such as a laptop. The virtual environment has created an encouraging environment for knowledge to flourish at an increasing rate, (Woldeab, Yawson, & Osafo, 2020). Compared to traditional face to face with a classroom full of students it might be impossible to meet the needs of all the students in a face to face setting.Lastly, the environment in which a student is most likely to thrive depends on that individual’s study preferences and habits. Many students prefer face-to-face learning environments because they are already familiar with that style of learning. Even though a study was conducted, and the overall students said that they prefer online learning; because of how well the materials were well organized for the students to get to (Hauck, 2006). There will always be negative reviews from face to face learning verse online learning, but the biggest key is going to be up to the individual to come up with a strategic plan of action while learning in a traditional face to face learning environment or an online learning environment.
