Homework Assignment 7

Due in Week 8 and worth 30 points

The experiment data in below table was to evaluate the effects of three variables on invoice errors for a company. Invoice errors had been a major contributor to lengthening the time that customers took to pay their invoices and increasing the accounts receivables for a major chemical company. It was conjectured that the errors might be due to the size of the customer (larger customers have more complex orders), the customer location (foreign orders are more complicated), and the type of product. A subset of the data is summarized in the following Table.

Table: Invoice Experiment Error Customer Size	Customer Location	Product Type	Number of Errors -	-	-	15 +	-	-	18 -	+	-	6 +	+	-	2 -	-	+	19 +	-	+	23 -	+	+	16 +	+	+	21 Customer Size: Small (-), Large (+) Customer Location: Foreign (-), Domestic (+) Product Type: Commodity (-), Specialty (=)

Use the date in table above and answer the following questions in the space provided below:

  1. What is the nature of the effects of the factors studied in this experiment?
  2. What strategy would you use to reduce invoice errors, given the results of this experiment?

Film Paper

Watch Beau Travail and write:

Decide on a specific element you would like to examine and discuss in your paper.
This could be a particular cinematic elements such as music, editing, cinematography or the content and themes of the film or the characterizations depicted in the film, or the structure and form of the
film. You can choose to combine two ideas. For example, you might write about the ways in which
editing expresses the theme of the ways in which sound supports characterization. You might write
about how the theme or message a filmmaker wishes to convey may create the form of the film. Ask yourself questions about a film to generate ideas for the paper.

Do focus on a particular and relatively narrow topic suitable to the length of your paper
(3 to 4 pages). Have a thesis – a one-sentence summation of what your paper is about –
clearly in mind before beginning to write. Make sure the paper has a function: argue with
a critical position, make a statement and prove it.
2. Do use specific examples from the films to illustrate your points. Be precise and accurate
in describing your example. General assertions such as the acting was awful, the
cinematography was breathtaking, or the editing was monotonous have no validity
without support by examples from the film.
3. Do try to be imaginative in relation to your material. This means your views, your intuition
and your insights are valuable.
4. Do check your paper carefully for typos, errors in grammar, etc. before turning it in.
Proofread it a day after your write it and you may spot inconsistencies in logic or any
other problems not apparent in the moment of writing. Sometimes reading the paper
aloud is a helpful way to detect errors.

Provide one example of a software application that can help in the management of a disaster. Discuss how this software can help with disaster management and provide examples.
Provide a response to two discussions.

DAM stands Apparatus Deployment Analysis Module. It is difficult to plan for how a disaster will affect assets and important members of a crisis team. Each asset could mean live or death and each team member is vital to recovery. What ADAM offers is a way to deploy assets based on predictions so that they will provide a greater service in a disaster scenario. Management in a disaster requires quick informed decisions, but this could cause issues. Rash, fast decision making in certain time sensitive situation could allocate resources in wrong places or not enough personnel in critically hit area. ADAM takes into account factors that impact response performance. Factors such as providing alternate deployment scenarios providing the optimal location for a new station, calculates the effects on unit availability when adding or removing units from a deployment, and evaluates response performance based on incident type, station first-due areas, shift, time of day, day of month, or month of year, and risk level. (deccanintl.com, (n.d.)) These among other capabilities offered by ADAM helps paint a good picture of potential performance of a disaster response.
Discussion 2
What Zerto does is provide a blanket data loss prevention for an organization. Also, a fun feat is how it allows the owner to run tests even during business hours to see how things are currently working and what would be deemed a threat or something to work on minimizing so it does not become a big issue later down the road. Zerto also eliminates the need to have a separate data center designated for disaster recovery. Since it is heavily focused on cloud usage, this could mean that all the data an organization has could be backed up and stored via the cloud and not have to worry about needing physical servers on site. This helps with strategy in planning and meetings on figuring out where what information may be stored where and how good the security is on that cloud service. Zerto also has a great recovery point objective (rpo) setting which they say is mere seconds. This is important in case of any type of disaster that hits, and the business still needs to carry forward, then Zerto would be able to kick in and have all the necessary data at the organization’s fingertips to stay in step with little to no stumble.

This week we looked at experiments. Experiments are one of many types of research projects. Experiments are unique in that a stimulus is applied. In other words, the researcher will “do something” to the subjects. This is usually best understood in terms of medical research in which the stimuli is a drug or treatment. As we learned, it is vitally important in experimental research to have a control group to gauge if the stimulus is actually causing the effect. One type of experiment that is especially fun is the breaching experiment in which the researcher sets up a scenario that breaches social norms (i.e. wearing clothes backwards, skipping in the office, or other more serious breaches of social norms). Social norms are not absolutes, but rather are fluid changing with time and space. We essentially are living under all made-up rules that are products of living within a society. Therefore, breaching experiments look to uncover those made-up and many times hidden rules of society. In the video (Only 2 Seats Left), a breaching experiment is conducted to gauge stereotypes and response to stereotypes.
For Exercise 4:
Create a breaching experiment and describe it in detail (5-15 sentences).
What aspect of human/social behavior are you researching with this experiment?
