This past year, the news has been busy wrestling with abortion laws. What do you think of some of the proposed legislation (i.e., allowing abortion up to the point of birth)? How would you like to see these laws changed? At what point is a baby a baby and not simply “tissue” or non-person? Whose rights trump whose (or what’s) in this issue (including those in the *big* picture, such as father)?

Visit the section of a toy store for children under3 years of age. Check the sug

Visit the section of a toy store for children under3 years of age. Check the suggested ages on the toys you examine. What do the kinds of toys aimed at 1-to 3-year-olds tell you about children in this age group? (For example, why do these toys not have small parts?) If the store carries “educational” toys, what do the toys indicate about the interests and abilities of children in this age group? Do you see toys that appear to be targeted specifically for boys or specifically for girls? Based on what you have learned about children’s abilities, do anytoys seem inappropriate for children of the suggested age range? Write a 2-page summary of your findings; include references to text/readings.

Last week, we read several responses to the problem of evil and suffering. Think about the approaches of James Cone and Andrew Sung Park in particular. How do their approaches help us understand Elie Wiesel’s experiences of suffering, trauma, and faith in Night? How does Wiesel respond to his own lived experience of the problem of evil: the Holocaust? Where do you see Wiesel’s struggle with the problem of evil, and how does he live out his faith and express his faith in response to this particular obstacle? (Use quotes from Night to guide your reflections.) Night by Elie Wiesel, preface and pages 1-29 (this is one of your required textbooks) Night by Elie Wiesel, pages 29-65

Judgment and Decision Making is a relatively new field, with an incredibly active current research agenda. Draw on what you have learnt throughout the module to construct a research proposal. Focus of research proposal: Using Adults with ADHD to test heuristic and bias based theories of judgement and decision making. Maximum length: 10 pages (A4 – font 12, DOUBLE SPACED, margins a minimum of 2.5 cm). The proposal must include each of the following elements. The use of subheadings is encouraged. Figures and tables are another way in which information might be presented most effectively. • Aims • Background • Methodology (15%) o Ethical Issues – You need to demonstrate that you have paid attention to the potential for any difficulties to arise from the proposed research. How you structure the proposal is ultimately up to you. A typical structure would present a short introduction to the issue under investigation with the central aims of the proposal, all included in the first couple of pages. The background would follow, with the aim being to set up why the current research question is of paramount importance, given the extant literature (approximately 6-7 pages). The final page or so would consist of methodology. Methodology. You need to report what you will do, and why you will do it. The methodology should present an example experiment in your program of research. Although the number of participants (including power calculations) is a critical part of ‘real’ grant applications, that is not necessary in this assignment. Whilst the aims and methodology are important, the main aim of this assessment is to test your ability to synthesise previous literature to identify a fruitful future line of research. Consequently, it is the background that is weighted most heavily in this assessment. Strong proposals will synthesise across the module to identify a program of research. Proposals simply suggesting a methodological tweak on a previous experiment will not achieve high marks. Bibliography. This is required, but is IN ADDITION TO the 10 pages of the proposal.
